Proprietary technologies with complicated licensing currently dominate the microprocessor industry. As a result, we must seek out a freely available, open-source alternative. In this paper, we discussed the implementation of a five-stage pipelined soft processor core. The core uses the RISC-V RV32I Base Integer Instruction Set Architecture. RISC-V is an open standard ISA that is freely available to use and modify. To implement our processor core, we followed the FPGA design methodology. First, we implemented the design specification with the VHDL Hardware Description Language. Then, siwe mulated the design in the ModelSim simulation environment. Following the verification, we analyzed the resource usage, critical path, and maximum frequency of the processor, then uploaded the processor core to an actual Cyclone IV EP4CE6E22C FPGA. Our CPU core successfully executed all the RV32I instructions, except FENCE, ECALL, and CSR instructions. The proposed processor core runs on 2115 LUTs, 558 flip-flops, and 67,608 memory bits, with a maximum frequency of 62.95 MHz. © 2022 IEEE.

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems are saving time, reducing costs, and human efforts to perform tasks in diverse fields such as education, medicine, finance, and journalism. This growing relevance of AI in different domains brings a need to prepare future professionals in undergraduate education to use AI technologies effectively and responsibly in their careers. Through AI literacy in undergraduate education, non-computer science students can become prepared to use AI methods and tools to bring benefits (e.g., saving time, better outcomes) for their domains/future jobs, understand and increase awareness of the ethical, social, and legal issues raised by AI and critically evaluate these technologies when using them in their future jobs. Based on that, the main objective of this research is to develop an undergraduate AI course based on a competency framework that will empower future professionals from different domains with AI knowledge and skills.

Antenna position estimation is an important problem in large irregular arrays where the positions might not be known very accurately from the start. In a previous paper we presented a method using harmonically related signals transmitted from an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), with the added advantage that the UAV can be in the near-field of the receiving antenna array. It was shown that the method delivers excellent results using ideal synthetic data with added noise. In this paper we continue the work by simulating the problem in a full-wave solver. Although the results are less accurate than when synthetic data are used, due to the effects of mutual coupling, the method still performs satisfactorily, with errors smaller than 4% of the smallest transmitted wavelength. © 2022 IEEE.

Design for Debug (DFD) has become a crucial feature in complex System-on-Chips (SoCs) to provide effective debugging capabilities. This paper highlights the significant role of RTL parameters and their verification strategies within an SoC. It introduces a novel methodology for pre-silicon RTL parameter verification, addressing the limitations of current methods, which include substantial manual effort for test bench setup, long simulation run times (approximately 3 days), significant memory requirements (over 128GB), and high debugging overhead at the SoC level. To overcome these challenges, we present the Early Bug Detector (EBD), an innovative solution that automates and simplifies RTL parameter checks using a comprehensive Python-based methodology. EBD ensures the unique verification of various RTL parameters across the SoC. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of EBD, validating RTL parameters in less than 2 minutes compared to the traditional method, which took 3 days. This advancement enables the detection of early bugs before the simulation flow, facilitates early validation sign-off, and ensures smooth post-silicon handoffs.

Alterations in gait cycle i.e stride rate show fractal dynamics and lower limb walking variability between healthy controls and the controls associated to any neurological disorder. The paper proposes a study in which these stride variability changes in neurological functioning linked with individuals with neurocognitive disorder and accumulation of changes happen in the human body with time called ageing. To validate this research work, we compared the participants' gait cycle in time series: 1) healthy young participants and healthy older adults 2) subjects with Parkinson's disease (PD) and disease-free subjects. Using the Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) method we computed $\alpha$, a measure of a degree to which one stride time is compared with the previous and the consecutive intervals over a various time span. The scaling exponent $\alpha$ is exigently curtailed in older adults as compared to young healthy participants. The scaling exponent $\alpha$ is also lower in the subjects with PD compared with the disease-free participants. Moreover, $\alpha$ seems linearly correlated to the degree of functional impairment in subjects with PD. These findings demonstrate that stride time fluctuations are more arbitrary in elderly subjects and in subjects with PD. Abnormal fluctuations in the fractal properties of lower limb dynamics are clearly related to functioning in central nervous system control. © 2021 IEEE.

Human Action recognition is a complex problem that attracts more and more researchers from the scientific community due to its applicability in domains such as security and behavior analysis. At its core, this problem entails classifying an action into a finite set of classes. Neural network based approaches, and especially convolutional neural networks, are a good starting point for solving the problem of human action recognition. Due to their nature, they can recognize spatio-temporal features very well, making them ideal for working with sequences of RGB images. In this paper are proposed three types of convolutional neural network architectures that contribute to solving the problem of Human Action Recognition. The first one is based on 2D kernels, the second one on 3D kernels, and the third one on TCN (Temporal Convolutional Network) units. Each one is presented with its structure, advantages and disadvantages, along with metrics that measure their performance. The one based on 2D convolutions is the fastest, but it also has the lowest performances. The second one is a good middle ground, useful in certain situations which require a fast classifier operating on different action classes. Finally, the one based on TCNs performs close to some of the best existent models. It represents a viable solution to the proposed problem. It can classify many actions, using only RGB images of fairly low resolution, in real time. The three models have been tested on the RGB part of the NTU RGB+D dataset. The 2D convolution-based model obtained an accuracy of 7.43% on the Cross-Subject split and 10.28% on the Cross-View split. The 3D convolution-based model obtained 58.77% on Cross Subject and 56.11% on Cross-View. Finally, the TCN-based model obtained an accuracy of 80.45% on Cross-Subject and an accuracy of 82.57% on Cross-View. © 2021 IEEE.

Exploring new or emerging research domains or subdomains can become overwhelming due to the magnitude of available resources and the high speed at which articles are published. As such, a tool that curates the information and underlines central entities, both authors and articles from a given research context, is highly desirable. Starting from the articles of the international conference of Learning Analytics Knowledge (LAK) in its first decade, this paper proposes a novel method grounded in Cohesion Network Analysis (CNA) to analyze subcommunities of authors based on the semantic similarities between authors and papers, and estimate their global impact. Paper abstracts are represented as embeddings using a fine-tuned SciBERT language model, alongside a custom trained LSA model. The extrapolation between the local LAK community to a worldwide importance was also underlined by the comparison between the rankings obtained from our method and statistics from ResearchGate. The accuracies for binary classifications in terms of high/low impact predictions were around 70% for authors, and around 80% for articles. Our method can guide researchers by providing valuable information on the interactions between the members of a knowledge community and by highlighting central local authors who may potentially have a high global impact. © 2021 IEEE.

The rapid explosion of the Internet and computer interconnections has led to a progressive incident of cybersecurity attacks. The news media have reported several attacks that have resulted in devastating and grievous consequences for the victims. Malware has been the primary weapon of choice that perpetrators have used repeatedly to carry out many of these malicious cyber-attacks. Perpetrators either have exploited loopholes in existing network systems to attack or have used the weaknesses discovered in several emerging technologies to facilitate these malware related crimes. There is therefore the necessity to keep developing more effective and innovative malware defense mechanisms to meet head-on, the existing cybersecurity challenges. A study and an article published in 2022 titled "A Survey of Emerging Threats in Cybersecurity" provided updated information that include statistical data, figures, and tables to report incidents of malware attack cases. In this replicated study, we investigated and provided further information on the latest trends in the Cyber Malware war. An overview of the most exploited vulnerabilities in existing hardware, software, and network layers are discussed, followed by critiques of the existing mitigation techniques, in terms of why some have proven effective and why some have not. New attack patterns evolving in the use of technologies such as social media, cloud computing, smartphones, and other critical infrastructure are also discussed. Finally, this report compares today’s current situation with the earlier year 2012 study to make recommendations for future research on the subject. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

This Grand Challenge highlights the importance of Ethics in HCI and Computing, covering its concepts, theories, methods, and applications, as well as its relevance in research, teaching, and practice, considering the basic elements of Ethical consideration such as freedom, conscience, rationality, and accountability. The challenge includes but is not limited to, legal and practical issues of human involvement in HCI research. This Grand Challenge demands studies and advances with implications for HCI in the normative, applied and meta-scientific fields of computer Ethics. The role of HCI is to promote debate and transform Computing, as a science and application, and to inform society on issues involving computational technologies, their consequences for human beings and other forms of life. This Grand Challenge points out that the HCI area must inform society and transfer the results of research, as one of the fundamental ethical aspects of the beneficence of participants. In this way, ethical and responsible research in HCI must reverberate in actions that direct scientific and technological development, the definition of public and regulatory policies, and their alignment with universal human rights and the constitution of more just and democratic societies. Usability evaluations are relevant to know the Usability of a software product. However, it is becoming increasingly important to obtain quantitative information that can be measured, and therefore be compared and be classified. In the ATM domain, not only there is very little literature on proposed methods, but in general very little information on usability benchmarking between ATM applications. In that sense, we propose a Usability Evaluation Process for ATM interfaces. This process allows, through an ordered set of stages, a set of artifacts, techniques and a checklist, to carry out a Usability Evaluation and to obtain both qualitative and quantitative information on the usability level of the interfaces of an ATM application, and to be able to make comparisons and benchmarking Likewise, one of the proposed artifacts is a questionnaire of relevant aspects in the ATM domain. This process has been validated by usability experts and ATM domain experts. Finally, further validations are expected by applying this proposal in real measurement cases.
