Deep neural networks (DNNs) have recently emerged as the de facto standard for achieving exceptional results and demonstrating a major impact on a variety of computer vision tasks for real-world scenarios. Nonetheless, the trained networks frequently suffer from a well-known issue, overfitting, due to the unintended bias in a dataset that causes unreliable results. In order to overcome this challenge, several research have tried to relieve the bias by learning debiased representation with biased datasets;however, it still produces unsatisfactory results as it is difficult to learn the debiased representation in highly biased datasets. To address this problem, we propose a novel Image-to-Image translation framework, Biased Image Translation (BIT), that translates biased samples (bias-aligned) into bias-free samples (bias-conflicting). BIT consists of three steps: 1) extracting bias-conflicting samples, 2) training and adapting generative models, and 3) translating bias-aligned samples into bias-conflicting samples with the generative models. Finally, we can generate bias-conflicting samples in highly biased datasets without any prior knowledge about bias types. Through the bias benchmark datasets, composed of synthetic and real-world images, we demonstrate BIT successfully mitigate widespread bias issues by augmenting bias-conflicting samples based on a image translation mechanism.

It is now possible to identify and monitor things with more efficiency and precision because to advancements in computer vision technologies that have been made in security systems. This study provides a thorough analysis of a real-time object tracking and recognition system developed to improve security procedures by using PC cameras (webcams). The goal of this research is to address the crucial requirements for automation, scalability, and quick response in security applications. The limitations of conventional security systems, which mostly rely on human surveillance and retroactive analysis, are the driving force for this study. Establishing a system that can proactively identify and address security issues is the main goal of this research. The main objectives include building a robust object recognition system, integrating object tracking algorithms, designing an easy-to-use user interface, and thoroughly analyzing the system's performance in real-world scenarios. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The recent development of Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology and the UAVs' unique features offered the impetus for new UAV-based applications and services. The UAV's low maintenance cost, small size, outstanding maneuvering capability, and the possibility to be equipped with various technologies(e.g., sensors, cameras, and artificial intelligence (AI) systems) made the UAV-based systems suitable for performing autonomoustasks in indoor and hard-to-reach environments. One of the most promising applications of UAVs in indoor environments is autonomous monitoring and tracking. In this paper, we highlight the unique characteristics of UAV-based tracking systems, discussthe various system classifications based on the target behavior and the number of used UAVs, present some of the work that hasbeen done to design UAV-based indoor monitoring and tracking systems, and discuss the critical design challenges specific to indoor target tracking systems. Finally, we highlight some of the most promising technologies and solutions to develop effective UAV-based indoor monitoring and tracking systems. © 2022 IEEE.

Despite the rising prevalence of intelligent voice assistants in people's homes, it remains opaque to most users how they function. With the overall goal to foster informed usage and responsible handling of personal data, the user's understanding increasingly moves into the focus of research. Particularly in the context of black box technologies such as voice assistants, individuals build intuitive mental models (also called folk theories) which can act as a guide for how they understand and interact with such systems. To shed light on individuals' mental models regarding intelligent voice assistants, we applied a visual elicitation method during a citizen science workshop: 26 participants were asked to visualize how they imagine a voice assistant to function. The resulting drawings were categorized based on their theorization complexity level. While basic awareness of the overall functionality (user input - something happens - voice assistant output) was found in every drawing, 13 participants revealed mental models on how the input is received (e.g., audio recording and speech processing), six on how the information is then processed (e.g., database requests and data categorization), and five on how the output is generated (e.g., speech synthesis). Overall, the results underline the need to address individuals' gaps in understanding of intelligent technology that is already in widespread use.

This paper proposes a method for automatically generating annotated training data for fruit recognition using deep learning. The proposed method uses an open-source 3D creation software to generate tree models based on random parameters in a developed program-such as positions of fruits, leaves, and viewpoints;colors of fruits and leaves;tree shapes;and rendering algorithms. The advantage of the proposed method is that it automatically generates annotations of fruit shapes in the image, eliminating the need to manually generate numerous annotations. Due to the complexities of the light source color and environment in farm images taken outdoors, the proposed method reproduces the color temperatures of the sun and the angles of sunlight to reflect the actual climate in farms. The proposed method generates depth-mapped images of fruits and trees from the generated 3D computer graphics (3DCGs) and generates 2D mask images of fruits as annotations by comparing their depths. Fruits that are completely shielded in the 2D image are not suitable as training data, so they are automatically extracted and removed in this method. This enables the developed system to generate a large amount of appropriately annotated training data with several data variations.

Restless multi-armed bandits (RMABs) generalize the multi-armed bandits where each arm exhibits Markovian behavior and transitions according to their transition dynamics. Solutions to RMAB exist for both offline and online cases. However, they do not consider the distribution of pulls among the arms. Studies have shown that optimal policies lead to unfairness, where some arms are not exposed enough. Existing works in fairness in RMABs focus heavily on the offline case, which diminishes their application in real-world scenarios where the environment is largely unknown. In the online scenario, we propose the first fair RMAB framework, where each arm receives pulls in proportion to its merit. We define the merit of an arm as a function of its stationary reward distribution. We prove that our algorithm achieves sublinear fairness regret in the single pull case O(√T lnT), with T being the total number of episodes. Empirically, we show that our algorithm performs well in the multi-pull scenario as well. © 2024 international Foundation for Autonomous Agents and Multiagent systems.

With the development of the textile and clothing industry, understanding and grasping the characteristics and properties of textiles and clothing has become increasingly important. This article proposes a multimodal textile and clothing cognition graph(CG) construction method to comprehend textiles and clothing better. This method combines knowledge graph(KG) and multimodal data processing techniques to integrate various information about textiles and clothing into a unified CG. Firstly, critical information is extracted from textual and image data related to textiles and clothing using web crawling techniques. Then, utilizing modeling and representation methods of KG, the extracted information is organized into entities and relationships, thus constructing a CG for textiles and clothing. Finally, browsing and analysis of the textile and clothing CG are realized through graph visualization and interactive technologies. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can effectively construct a multimodal CG for textiles and clothing, supporting research and applications in the textile and clothing field. © 2023 IEEE.

In the boundary element method (BEM), we deal with the direct and indirect boundary integral equations. The indirect BEM requires less degree of freedom compared with the direct BEM and has been used for a long time. It has been numerically proven that the Double-Layer Approach (DLA) possesses superior features to analyze static electric and magnetic problems. However, the indirect BEM suffers from the so-called cancellation-error. While the Surface Charge Method (SCM) has to deal with the cancellation-error, when evaluating the electric and magnetic fields in the medium, the DLA does so when evaluating the field in the surrounding medium. In order to avoid the cancellation-error in the DLA, we propose an approach suitable for both electric and magnetic problems by preparing a post-processing based on the direct BEM. Using simple but suitable models and generalizing the DLA, we study how to avoid the errors in a post-processing stage in both static electric and magnetic problems. A comparison with a magnetostatic FEM model is also presented. © 2022 IEEE.

This work deals with the study of implementation possibilities of broadband optical multiplexer/demultiplexer in the form of AWG (Arrayed Waveguide Gratings) in TWDM-PON topology (Time and Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network) by norm G.989.1 as a key component of the hybrid network. The functionality possibilities of the TWDM-PON system are observed where the goal of AWG design is to support also wavelengths different from standard wavelengths used for TWDM-PON in C-band (Conventional) ranges from 1530 nm to 1565nm and L-band (Long-wavelength, 1565-1625nm) bands. This should allow for older communication systems (for example EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) given by norm IEEE 802.3ah and GPON (Gigabit-capable Passive Optical Network) by norm ITU-T G.984) to be operating concurrently over ODN (optical distribution network) without mutual disturbance with newer xPON communication systems. The network topology operating in this manner makes efficient use of passive infrastructure, including reducing the cost of construction (CAPEx) or operation (OPEx) while creating hybrid types of optical networks. © 2025 SPIE.

Unplanned encounters or casual collisions between colleagues have long been recognized as catalysts for creativity and innovation. The absence of such encounters has been a negative side effect of COVID-enforced remote work. However, there have also been positive side effects such as less time lost to commutes, lower carbon footprints, and improved work-life balance. This vision paper explores how serendipity for remote workers can be created by leveraging IoT technologies, edge computing, high-resolution video, network protocols for live interaction, and video/audio denaturing. We reflect on the privacy issues that technology-mediated serendipity raises and sketch a path towards honoring diverse privacy preferences.
