This paper, based on a reflective approach, presents several insights and lessons learned from the design, development, and deployment of a location-based social network and a location-based game. These are analyzed and discussed against the life-cycle of our studies, and range from engaging with the participants, to dealing with technical issues while on the field. Overall, the insights and lessons learned illustrate that one should be prepared and flexible enough to accommodate any issues as they arise in a professional manner considering not only the results of the study but also the participants and the researchers involved. The aim of this work to inform researchers and designers about some of the key challenges we encountered during our research into pervasive location-based mobile technologies in the wild.

Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has become a powerful method in computational fluid dynamics and has drawn more and more attention in high-performance computing due to its particulate nature and local dynamics, especially on recent multi-core or many-core platforms. This paper develops a parallel software framework for 3D LBM simulation on a heterogeneous multi-zone processor, MT-3000. An improved pipelined algorithm named Pencil-H is proposed, which can not only fully exploit the advantages of each component of MT-3000 but also overlap the time of calculation and communication. Moreover, an architecture-aware multi-level parallelization algorithm is developed to fully utilize the computational performance of MT-3000. A benchmark test is performed to verify the reliability and test the performance of the LBM code. Experimental results show that the optimized code achieves a 32.02 × speedup compared with using 16 CPU cores and achieves a performance of 286.03MLUPS which reaches 72.3% of the theoretical peak performance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Although there is a growing concern about accidents and illnesses at work, global statistics still reveal alarming data. It is estimated that 2.78 million people die each year worldwide due to labor factors. In this regard, information systems and automation systems applied to occupational health and safety are gaining prominence for accident prevention. One of the high risk activities that have adopted technology as an ally is working in confined spaces. Currently, non-human entry robotic systems have been widely adopted for this purpose. However, these solutions do not always cover all scenarios, still requiring humans to perform tasks in those locations. Thus, it is expected that the new era of work in confined environments will be increasingly guided by hybrid systems of human-computer interaction. Some solutions from this perspective foresee the use of wearable computing, virtual reality and augmented reality to assist at these locations. The challenges in adopting these new technologies still consist in the characteristics of the environments themselves, which are hostile places with natural blockages for traditional communication and data transmission signals.

This article discusses the grand challenge of Emerging technologies, which is part of the seven Grand Challenges of the Human-computer Interaction (HCI) community for the years 2025-2035 in Brazil. Emerging technologies are characterized by significant scientific advances and rapid adoption, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), 5G, Big Data, Analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Robotics, and Virtual/Augmented/Mixed Reality (VR/AR/MR). Alongside the development of these technologies, various applications are emerging from a symbiosis among individuals, technologies, and contexts that make up a complex ecosystem. The emerging use of these technologies by human beings reveals specific demands for interaction in this ecosystem, highlighting the relevance of this topic. From an HCI perspective, this article discusses how the Brazilian scientific community should contribute over the next decade to effectively adopt emerging technologies and/or the emerging use of technologies in different contexts. Throughout the text, the identified issues pertinent to this challenge are analyzed from the perspective of how the elements of the ecosystem interact, contextualizing them at a national and global level. An agenda of six research topics is presented, actions to overcome the challenge are discussed, and the expected results for each are listed. Finally, ethical issues regarding research with emerging technologies are highlighted, and a final discussion regarding the other six challenges that are part of the HCI Grand Challenges is presented. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

One third of Germans talk to `Alexa', `Siri' and other voice-controlled devices. These devices become omnipresent and change the way how humans interact with digital technologies. We hypothesize, this Human-computer-Interface can minimize barriers for elderly people in their usage of digital services. But, do elderly people even know about voice-controlled technologies? Are the systems used by elderly and what reservations do they have? Based on a quantitative study in three municipalities in a rural area (n = 747), we found that 59% of people aged 55+ years know voice-controlled devices, 37% used them at least once and even 26% use them regularly. But, more than two thirds of respondents (69%) are concerned that their data are not safe. In contrast, only 35% express concerns to be unable to use the devices. The study concludes that there is a gap between the perceived usefulness and trust in the devices for the surveyed demographic.

Usability evaluations are relevant to know the Usability of a software product. However, it is becoming increasingly important to obtain quantitative information that can be measured, and therefore be compared and be classified. In the ATM domain, not only there is very little literature on proposed methods, but in general very little information on usability benchmarking between ATM applications. In that sense, we propose a Usability Evaluation Process for ATM interfaces. This process allows, through an ordered set of stages, a set of artifacts, techniques and a checklist, to carry out a Usability Evaluation and to obtain both qualitative and quantitative information on the usability level of the interfaces of an ATM application, and to be able to make comparisons and benchmarking Likewise, one of the proposed artifacts is a questionnaire of relevant aspects in the ATM domain. This process has been validated by usability experts and ATM domain experts. Finally, further validations are expected by applying this proposal in real measurement cases.

Question answering (QA) systems are sequence-to-sequence model based programs that find the most accurate answer to a query by using given texts. In today’s world, QA system software is run on different platforms by various institutions. This means that users have to use different QA system software, developed with different technologies on various platforms, to find the most accurate answer to their queries. However, there is a lack of systems that allow these types of systems to be used in a hybrid manner on a single interface. To address this issue, this research investigates a software architecture that will enable QA systems trained with different datasets on various platforms to be used with a single programming interface. To demonstrate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed hybrid question answering system framework software architecture, a prototype software has been developed. The performance of the developed prototype software has been compared with standalone QA system software based on the execution time performance metric. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed framework software architecture has negligible processing overheads. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Vaccines are important means to prevent diseases and save lives. Data related to vaccination process, such as vaccine identification and number of vaccinated people, is critical to the production and distribution of vaccines in a way to achieve the desired immunization in a country. We propose a reliable approach based on Blockchain to manage vaccination data. We describe the roles played in a vaccination process as well as their relations. Aiming to validate our approach with a prototype, we present the data required in two scenarios, including the registration of a vaccine administration and the visualization of the vaccination history of a citizen. We discuss the potential of our proposal, by indicating analysis that can be conducted with the vaccination data, as well as challenges to be addressed in further investigations. Research suggests metacognition enhances performance with emerging technologies (e.g., intelligent tutoring systems [ITSs]), where learning goals guide metacognitive processes (e.g., judgments of learning and feelings of knowing). A growing body of evidence has found significant relationships between motivation, metacognitive process use, and performance with ITSs. Yet, most studies do not define metacognition based on its relevance to achieving a learning goal (or multiple learning goals). In this study, we examined 186 undergraduates' multimodal data captured during learning with an ITS called MetaTutor to analyze whether the stability of change in the proportion of metacognitive judgments initiated on pages containing information relevant to achieving either learning goals 1 or 2. Latent growth curves suggested that the stability of page-irrelevant metacognitive judgments from the first to second learning goal was positively related to performance, but there were no relations between achievement goal orientation. We describe implications for contextualizing metacognition to the model of metamemory and multiple learning goals with an ITSs. Future research utilizing this method could provide insight into designing effective interventions based on what personally motivates learners to engage in metacognition to augment their learning and performance with emerging technologies.

Nowadays, the use of electronic payment methods has increased due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The use of cash has been limited to reduce interactions;however, in developing countries, there is still a strong necessity for this type of payment. The ATM is the only channel where people can get cash without interacting with someone else. In order to improve the experience of the clients in the ATM channel we designed a set of interfaces that allow clients to select the denomination of the bills they want to get for the intended withdrawal amount. In this case of study, we followed a design framework for ATM to propose a usable design for this new functionality. The framework allowed the team to execute the phases of a complete design process that is specific to ATM. After two iterations, the interfaces were approved. This solution showed promising results despite the fact of the completely virtual context.
