An incremental tide in IoT devices prompts a centralized control system where physical controls such as buttons and knobs can become virtual and centralized via augmented reality: especially headset AR. I conduct a literature mapping to identify gaps and create a front-end based virtual control panel API tool to allow programmers and end-users to rapidly create headset augmented reality-based virtual control systems for physical devices. I probe on how an artificial intelligence back-end aids in such a system in terms of panel creation and automation as well as panel usage and control scenarios. I delve into use cases of the virtual control panel API including mass usage and specialized scenarios. Furthermore, I specify the guidelines for a requirements elicitation study for such a system along with potential points of derivation. Next, I probe into implications and limitations of such a system in terms of artificial intelligence, usage, and precision. My work has implications for programmers and users of a virtual control system backed by artificial intelligence for the purpose of controlling physical IoT devices in mass usage as well as in specialized scenarios.

Introduction: There is a gender imbalance in computer science (CS) and STEMeducation and careers where males are more represented. With evolving technologies arising and the need for a more diverse workforce, it is important to identify factors that may cause females to be more prone to not persist in CS careers. This study investigated gender differences and psychosocial perceptions of experiences in a CS education class. Method: Twelve students were recruited to the study. Data on judgements of performance and psychosocial aspects of the course was collected (learning, difficulty, enjoyment). Results: There were no significant differences between boys' and girls' perceptions of performance and experiences in the course. Females, however, reported small to medium effect sizes in experiencing more learning, more enjoyment and experienced more difficulties than boys in the course. Conclusion: Future studies should control for gender differences in CS and STEM education. Same sex role models might influence experience and perceptions of performance, which can influence persistence of females in CS careers.

We tackle the digital divide issue from the user experience point of view. Our study aim at obtaining information on the impact of UI/UX design choices on the participants’ achievement strategies. In that prospect, we asked voluntary participants receiving social benefits at a social action center to perform typical account management tasks on two French administration websites. Then we analyzed their visual exploration strategies. The results of this preliminary study suggest that highly symbolic pictographic representations are ignored by users in a situation of digital precariousness. They spend a large amount of time looking through the textual content to find indications, submenus or links to navigate rather than exploiting the shorthand access provided through the abstract icon system. These ergonomic choices constitute an additional barrier to the use of these technologies by fragile users. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the past few years, the large-scale dissemination of misinformation through social media has become a critical issue, harming the trustworthiness of legit information, social stability, democracy and public health. Thus, developing automated misinformation detection methods has become a field of high interests both in academia and in industry. In many developing countries such as Brazil, India, and Mexico, one of the primary sources of misinformation is the messaging application WhatsApp. Despite this scenario, due to the private messaging nature of WhatsApp, there still few methods of misinformation detection developed specifically for this platform. In this work we present the ***, a dataset of WhatsApp messages in Brazilian Portuguese, collected from Brazilian public groups and manually labeled. Besides, we evaluated a series of misinformation classifiers combining Natural Language Processing-based techniques of feature extraction and a set of well-know machine learning algorithms, totaling 108 different scenarios. Our best result achieved a F1 score of 0.73, and the analysis of errors indicates that they occur mainly due to the predominance of short texts that accompany media files. When texts with less than 50 words are filtered, the F1 score rises to 0.87. Copyright © 2021 by SCITEPRESS – science and Technology Publications, Lda. All rights reserved.

Literature recommendation systems (LRS) assist readers in the discovery of relevant content from the overwhelming amount of literature available. Despite the widespread adoption of LRS, there is a lack of research on the user-perceived recommendation characteristics for fundamentally different approaches to content-based literature recommendation. To complement existing quantitative studies on literature recommendation, we present qualitative study results that report on users' perceptions for two contrasting recommendation classes: (1) link-based recommendation represented by the Co-Citation Proximity (CPA) approach, and (2) text-based recommendation represented by Lucene's MoreLikeThis (MLT) algorithm. The empirical data analyzed in our study with twenty users and a diverse set of 40 Wikipedia articles indicate a noticeable difference between text- and link-based recommendation generation approaches along several key dimensions. The textbased MLT method receives higher satisfaction ratings in terms of userperceived similarity of recommended articles. In contrast, the CPA approach receives higher satisfaction scores in terms of diversity and serendipity of recommendations. We conclude that users of literature recommendation systems can benefit most from hybrid approaches that combine both link- and text-based approaches, where the user's information needs and preferences should control the weighting for the approaches used. The optimal weighting of multiple approaches used in a hybrid recommendation system is highly dependent on a user's shifting needs.

Persuasive technology is a new field of research that has attracted considerable attention from game designers since there is a growing interest in games promoting positive behavioral changes. Persuasive games have been exploited to tremendous effect with applications ranging from mobile healthcare, which persuade users to exercise more often and adopt a healthy lifestyle, to government programs encouraging civic engagement. Therefore, persuasive technologies have become an indispensable part of the modern game designer's toolkit, and their importance is only set to grow with time. In this paper, we begin by reviewing the existing body of work in this field while also explaining the pros and cons of emerging design models and theoretical frameworks. We then uncover major pitfalls in the current work and suggest directions for future research. Hopefully, this article will prove instructive to game designers and leave them with a better understanding of the central concepts in the field of persuasive technology.

Crowdsourcing testing leverages extensive user participation to identify and fix potential issues in industrial control software, ensuring its security and reliability. Decentralized applications (DApps) can utilize blockchain and smart contract technologies to ensure the decentralization, transparency, and tamper-resistance of industrial control software testing. However, testing efforts conducted via DApps are typically confined to a single blockchain. Coordinating and scheduling DApps deployed on different blockchains has become a critical challenge. Moreover, DApps need to verify the credibility of crowdsourcing participants to ensure the reliability of testing. In order to address these issues, this paper proposes SAMOC, an atomic cross-chain system based on the Atomic-Oracle chain, which aims to realize atomic cross-chain invocations for DApps. SAMOC can realize atomic cross-chain invokes, and the intelligent community deployed on the Atomic-Oracle chain calculates the reputation of users’ accounts across multiple chains through Oracle. This paper also designs a corresponding incentive mechanism to ensure that the auditing of cross-chain invokes is honest and trustworthy. Experimental results show that the cross-chain invokes of the proposed SAMOC scheme have lower latency compared to AtomCI.

Currently, professionals from the most diverse areas of knowledge need to explore their data repositories in order to extract knowledge and create new products or services. Several tools have been proposed in order to facilitate the tasks involved in the Data science lifecycle. However, such tools require their users to have specific (and deep) knowledge in different areas of Computing and Statistics, making their use practically unfeasible for non-specialist professionals in data science. In this paper, we propose a guideline to support predictive tasks in data science. In addition to being useful for non-experts in Data science, the proposed guideline can support data scientists, data engineers or programmers which are starting to deal with predictive tasks. Besides, we present a tool, called DSAdvisor, which follows the stages of the proposed guideline. DSAdvisor aims to encourage non-expert users to build machine learning models to solve predictive tasks, extracting knowledge from their own data repositories. The last few decades have seen the hospital environment become more and more technologically advanced with the development of advanced diagnostic and surgical tools. The beds have also undergone a radical transformation, thanks to the integration of electrical and electronic components, that have allowed the birth of the modern widespread electric beds. This work presents a checklist developed to test the usability of the pushbutton panels that control their movements, which could be useful in designing a controller capable of considering the needs of users such as caregivers and patients. The checklist items were created starting from the usability guidelines and then placed within an appropriate Nielsen heuristic. The tool thus designed was tested in a usability expert evaluation session with five experts. The data collected were the responses to the checklist, the experts' comments, the notes collected during the procedure, the time to complete, and the severity and frequency of the problems detected. The results showed that the checklist could detect a substantial series of significant usability problems in a short time, which makes it an easily usable tool in the industrial field for rapid and valuable tests for future interfaces design. The usage of this developed checklist could be useful to design better control panels to facilitate both caregivers' work and patients' stay.
