The digital transformation of the recording industry is one of the most well-known in recent times, with the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) making new methods of music production available to amateurs and professionals in almost any setting beyond the traditional recording studio. However, the uptake of AI in this domain is seemingly impeded by DAW software architectures and a need for designers to better understand production practices and workflows. Our research addresses the latter of these challenges and in this extended abstract we present an overview of an ethnographic study that "gets inside" the work of the recording studio and exposes opportunities for the design of automated production tools. From a summary report of this work, we then aim to motivate or provoke novel conversations and future work in this problem space. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Opacity is a property of information flow that characterizes the ability of a system to keep its secret information hidden from a third party called an attacker. In the state-of-the-art, opacity of Discrete Event systems (DES) has been investigated using a variety of techniques. Methods based on Supervisory control Theory (SCT) emerge as an efficient approach for enforcing this property. In this paper, we address the problem of enforcing the opacity of a DES through the definition of a supervisor whose role is to restrain the behavior of the system keeping "good" runs only i.e., executions that exactly correspond to the opaque subset of the system's state space. The proposed approach is based on Symbolic Observation Graph: a hybrid graph where nodes are subsets of reachable states linked with unobservable actions. Encoding such nodes symbolically using binary decision diagrams allows to tackle the state space explosion problem. We designed a reduced-cost algorithm that synthesizes an optimal supervisor (at design time) to ensure the opacity of the system (at runtime). Moreover, we implemented our approach in C++ language and we validated our proposition using a real-life case study.

Conversational systems (CS) are increasingly present in people's daily lives. CS must provide a good experience and meet the needs of its users. Therefore, the Usability and User Experience (UX) evaluation is an appropriate step before making CSs available to society. To guide developers to identify problems, improvement suggestions, and user perceptions during CSs development, we developed a technology named Usability and User Experience Evaluation of Conversational systems (U2XECS). U2XECS is a questionnaire-based technology that provides Usability and UX statement specifics to evaluate CSs. We conducted an exploratory study performed to evaluate and evolve U2XECS. Our results evidenced positive points of U2XECS related to ease of use, usefulness, and intentions to use. Moreover, we identified opportunities for improvement in U2XECS, such as ambiguous statements that generated misinterpretations in subjects. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, telework policies have required many user experience (UX) labs to restrict their research activities to remote user testing. Automatic Facial Expression Analysis (AFEA) is an accessible psychophysiological measurement that can be easily implemented in remote user tests. However, to date, the literature on Human computer Interaction (HCI) has provided no guidelines for remote moderated user tests that collect facial expression data and synchronize them with the state of a dynamic stimulus such as a webpage. To address this research gap, this article offers guidelines for effective AFEA data collection that are based on a methodology developed in a concrete research context and on the lessons learned from applying it in four remote moderated user testing projects. Since researchers have less control over test environment settings, we maintain that they should pay greater attention to factors that can affect face detection and \or emotion classification prior, during, and after remote moderated user tests. Our study contributes to the development of methods for including psychophysiological and neurophysiological measurements in remote user tests that offer promising opportunities for information systems (IS) research, UX design, and even digital health research.

Advances in the understanding and control of pain require methods for measuring its presence, intensity, and other qualities. Shortcomings of the main method for evaluating pain - verbal report - have motivated the pursuit of other measures. Measurement of observable pain-related behaviors, such as facial expressions, has provided an alternative, but has seen limited application because available techniques are burdensome. computer vision and machine learning techniques have been successfully applied to the assessment of pain-related facial expression, suggesting that automated assessment may be feasible. Further development is necessary before such techniques can have more widespread implementation in pain science and clinical practice. Suggestions are made for the dimensions that need to be addressed to facilitate such developments. © 2021 Owner/Author.

Nowadays, the society is highly intelligent, and smart city has become the common expectation of people. Smart city is a large concept, which includes smart home, Smart Transportation, Smart public, Service and Social management, smart Urban Management and other aspects. This paper mainly discusses the problem of the mobility in cities. The mobility in cities can be divided into two categories in practice, namely, the movement of humans and the movement of goods. In this paper, we enumerate the typical cases in the mobility of humans and goods, and analyze the operation principle of these cases one by one. Some of these examples are implemented, some are not. In order to make urban mobility "smart", we propose a framework of assistive system, which has a four-tier structure and uses big data, cloud computing, AI, deep learning and other technologies. It is aimed at a variety of different scenes, to provide users with the most thoughtful advice and the most humanized service, to solve the problem of urban mobility.

Interpolating data and the application of data mining techniques in nonlinear manifolds plays a significant role in different areas of knowledge, ranging from computer vision and robotics, to industrial and medical requests, and these growing number of applications have sparked the research interest of the scientific community to these topics. The Generalized Essential manifold, briefly, Essential manifold, consisting of the product of the Grassmann manifold of all k-dimensional subspaces of Rn and the Lie group of rotations in Rn, for instance, plays an important role in the problem of recovering the structure and motion from a sequence of images, also known as stereo matching, which is a crucial problem in image processing and computer vision. A well-known recursive procedure to generate interpolating polynomial curves in Euclidean spaces is the classical De Casteljau algorithm, which is a simple and powerful tool widely used in the field of computer Aided Geometric Design, particularly because it is essentially geometrically based. This algorithm has been generalized to geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds. Thus, having this in mind, in this work we present all the ingredients for a detailed implementation of the generalized De Casteljau algorithm to generate geometric cubic polynomials in the Essential manifold preparing the ground to solve different real interpolation problems in this manifold. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Beginning with the 2009 publication of Michael Massimi's Dying, Death, and Mortality: Towards Thanatosensitivity in HCI, researchers have been exploring how to design UX and UI for end-of-life systems and memorials. This work has resulted in the design of interactive posthumous personhoods memorializing those who have lived by utilizing the data the deceased produced while they were alive. HCI designers and researchers have implemented Natural Language Processing (NLP) to create interactive posthumous personhoods in the form of chatbots. Over the last five years, Mixed Reality (MR) has been integrated by practitioners to create posthumous personhoods that they claim offer a greater fidelity with the departed when they were alive than previous technologies. How MR intersects with those previous technologies, cultural, personal heritage, and memorialization to achieve this greater fidelity requires further exploration if the media is to be used to elevate the evidentiary status of these posthumous personhoods. Insights from HCI end-of-life literature, death and dying studies, and interactive non-fiction are used to explore the ontology of these interactive posthumous personhoods to discover what MR is doing. This paper elucidates connected ethical, ontological, and thanatological issues that the HCI field needs to address as this alternative practice of mourning and memorialization becomes a mainstream practice. The paper argues that MR increases the social and spatial presence of an MR posthumous personhood's identity and subjectivity with greater fidelity than previous technologies, and that this supports an audience's active creation of belief in the agent as being evidentiary of a posthumous personhood.

Shared spaces are regulation free, mixed traffic environments supporting social interactions between pedestrian, cyclist and vehicles. Even when these spaces are designed to foster safety supported by reduced traffic speeds, unforeseen collisions and priority conflicts are always an open question. While AR can be used to realise virtual pedestrian lanes and traffic signals, the change in pedestrian motion dynamics using such approaches needs to be understood. This work highlights an exploratory study to evaluate how speed and path of pedestrians are impacted when using an augmented reality based virtual traffic light interface to control collisions in pedestrian motion. To achieve this objective we analyse the motion information from controlled experiments, replicating pedestrian motion on a lane supported by a stop and go interface and including scenarios such as confronting a crossing pedestrian. Operators in closed-circuit television (CCTV) control rooms have to monitor large sets of video feeds coming from an ever increasing number of cameras. To assist these operators in their demanding day-to-day tasks, AI-driven support systems accompanied by user-centric interfaces are being developed. However, prototyping these support systems and testing them in operative control rooms can be a challenge. Therefore, in this paper, we present a virtual reality (VR) control room which can be used to investigate the effects of existing and future support systems on operators’ performance and behaviour in a fully controlled environment. Important assets of this VR control room include the possibility to subject operators to different levels of cognitive load and to monitor their cognitive-affective states using not only subjective but also behavioural and physiological techniques. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
