In the last decade, smartphone users grown from 2.8 billion worldwide in 2018 to 3.8 billion in 2021. This fact associates with greater ease of publishing and accessing fake news. This is a particularly concerning issue in a global crisis situation such as the COVID-19 pandemic. As stated by the WHO, this is a global health crisis and the spread of fake information could have a direct impact on people's wellbeing. Due to this situation, all systems which compose the quadruple helix (i.e., science, economy, politics and media and culture-based public) are under great pressure. On the one hand, citizens demand fast and trusted information, and on the other hand, the scientific community is pushed to publish, resulting in scientific papers published very fast and, sometimes, without adequate peer review processes, as reflected by the unprecedented number of retreats. The PandeVITA ecosystem will contribute to offering a better understanding of how societal actors' behave, understanding their reaction to and interaction with science and health developments in the context of pandemics, with the aim to encourage citizens to contribute to scientific research with different kinds of data. This paper describes a novel approach to citizen science interventions and user engagement based on motivational theory and behavioral science, aiming to provide a set of architectural components, technologies, tools and analytics to assess citizens' activities, system performance and stakeholders-related key performance indicators (KPIs) in an observatory fashion, allowing to investigate the motivation of the target participants, user engagement and long-term retention.

The Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) systems use sensors to detect the daily behavior of older adults and provide necessary assistance based on changes in their cognitive status and physical functions, thus enabling older adults to maintain their independence at home. However, the effectiveness of the AAL systems depends on the accuracy of the data provided by sensors. Namely, when a human error or a hardware failure occurs, the activity recognition model can become inaccurate. This inaccuracy hinders the identification of critical and potentially life-threatening activities. Although there are many methods for cleaning sensor data, there is no method for binary sensors deployed in smart homes. By considering noisy sensor events and unintentional forgetting of turning off the device, this paper proposes two clustering-based methods for denoising and splitting binary sensor events to address possible inaccuracy due to the two mentioned problems. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified by the experiments using four machine learning models and three real-world smart home datasets and adopting different sensor configurations. The experimental results demonstrate that compared to the original unprocessed datasets, by combining the two proposed methods, the average accuracy and F-measure are improved by 15.00% and 17.25%, respectively. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

US dismounted Special Operations Forces operating in near-threat environments must maintain their Situation Awareness, survivability, and lethality to maximize their effectiveness on mission. As small unmanned aerial systems and unmanned ground vehicles become more readily available as organic assets at the individual Operator and team level, these Operators must make the decision to divert attention and resources to the control of these assets using touchscreens or controllers to benefit from their support capabilities. This paper provides an end-to-end overview of a solution development process that started with a broad and future-looking capabilities exploration to address this issue of unmanned system control at the dismounted Operator level, and narrowed to a fieldable solution offering immediate value to Special Operation Forces. An overview of this user-centric design process is presented along with lessons learned for others developing complex human-machine interface solutions for dynamic and high-risk environments. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In this paper, we propose an interdisciplinary theoretical and empirical framework to investigate the particular faculties related to human "narrative cognition", in general, and in relation to MRT in particular. In order to contextualize our approach, we shortly review the cognitive turn in narratology, as well as state of the art in different domains that have undertaken psychophysiological studies that either characterize aspects that are relevant to narrative cognition, or which investigate mixed reality experiences. The idea is to bring together knowledge and insights from narratology, different branches of semiotics and cognitive sciences, with empirical strategies that bridge the gap between first-person phenomenological approaches and psychophysiological and behavioural methods. We propose a rationale in order to combine tools and techniques from MRT/VR/AR, interactive digital narratives and storytelling, with a suite of integrated psychophysiological methods (such as EEG, HR, GSR and eye tracking) and phenomenological-subjective approaches. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the section of The Design of Everyday Things titled "Moral Obligations of Design," Don Norman writes, "Designers need to make things that satisfy people's needs, in terms of function, in terms of being understandable and usable, and in terms of their ability to deliver emotional satisfaction, pride, and delight," (Norman, 293). This is equally true of doors, lessons, teapots, narratives, and games. And for some complex emerging objects, such as educational narrative games, designers must look at a synthesis of different object types to hypothesize heuristics and principles that will guide their design. Game designers rarely have extensive research on the design of their artifacts to analyze before they are asked to invent new combinations of mechanics, couple them with themes they did not create, and then test their efficacy for whatever the intended design goal of the game, be it education, entertainment, or training. Instead, designers often rely on anecdotal accounts of design of their genre of games, if they're fortunate, or on heuristics uncovered most often in other fields. In conversation with games studies and interactive storytelling scholars, I define these digital artifacts as games that use narratives generated in response to open text input from their players. For the emerging genre of interactive storytelling games the dearth of game design research and a lack of examples of fully functional games in the genre give designers little to start with. Though many in the field of interactive storytelling believe, for good reason, that these games have incredible educational potential, there are even fewer examples of such games to learn from, and practically no specific game design research on their creation. Such artifacts are the complex synthesis of generated narrative, a system open to a continuum of user input, and educational content that personalizes to the player to a high degree. Automatic facial expression recognition is an important component for efficient human-computer interaction system, and over the past decades, it has become a highly active research area. Numerous algorithms have been proposed in the literature to cope with the problem of face expression recognition (FER). General speaking, current existing FER methods can be categorized into two main groups, i.e., traditional machine learning-based approaches and deep learning-based approaches. Different from other surveys, in this study, we aim to not only comprehensively highlight the differences and similarities of the two approaches above, but also the new trend of hybrid and ensemble learning in FER systems by providing a general framework for each type and review the possible technologies that can be employed in its components. We conduct more specific and detailed competitive performances and experimental comparisons of researches from 2014 to 2020 on widely used datasets. We then extend our survey to our current application scenarios in Vietnam. © 2021 Global IT Research Institute (GiRI).
