Product-service systems (PSSs) have attracted researchers in engineering design for the past decades. Recent advances in digital technologies have expanded the potential functionalities that PSSs could deliver and designers’ repertoire of tools and techniques to make new value propositions. The key to the success of new value propositions is to achieve customer acceptance and continuous use. However, little is known about the precise routes by which customers accept and use PSSs over time and its dynamics. This conceptual study aims to provide an enhanced view of customer acceptance and continuous use of PSSs by integrating multiple theories and literature streams. In this paper, we suggest three propositions based on the key concepts found in our literature review—well-being, trust and control—, and illustrate a conceptual framework that represents the dynamics of customer acceptance and continuous use of PSSs. Based on the proposed framework, we outline further research questions that could advance our knowledge about design for continuous use of PSSs. © ICED *** right reserved.

The ubiquity of smart devices, combined with a lack of information about data garnered by them, make privacy a significant challenge for adopting smart devices. Ensuring users can safeguard their privacy without compromising the devices' functionality requires effective yet intuitive ways to manage personal privacy preferences. Current solutions for privacy management are severely lacking as they are ineffective in making users aware of potential privacy risks or how to mitigate them and as they offer limited support for interaction. As our first contribution, we develop a novel AR privacy management interface (PARA) that uses AR visualization to contextualize data disclosure and improve user's perceptions of privacy threats. Besides offering support for enhancing user's privacy perceptions, our interface supports privacy control on compatible devices through privacy-enhancing technologies. As our second contribution, we systematically study factors affecting privacy perceptions and privacy control for two device classes (smart camera and smart speaker) through a user study with N = 32 participants. Our results show that PARA's contextualization and visualization of privacy disclosure strongly affect the participants' privacy perceptions. For privacy control, we demonstrate that our prototype improves the participant's capability to identify risks and provides an effective and easy-to-use mechanism for controlling privacy disclosure, in contrast to existing state-of-the-art privacy management interfaces. © 2021 ACM.

Opportunistic communication is one of the key technologies for advertisement, information sharing, disaster evacuation guidance in delay-tolerant networks (DTNs), vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), and so on. The efficiency of message delivery in opportunistic communication is correlated to the routing protocols and the movement model of mobile entities. In this paper, we focus on message delivery based on opportunistic communication by pedestrians who move based on Lévy walk and Random walk movement models on the city’s road network. Moreover, we introduce roadside units located in the city, which play a role in the distributed message cache. We assume Random walk and Lévy walk as pedestrian mobility models and Epidemic, Spray and Wait, and PRoPHET as the routing protocols and analyze the influence of roadside units, pedestrian walk patterns, and the routing protocols of opportunistic communication on costs of message delivery. Our simulation results clarify the difference in routing protocols regarding network costs. We also discuss a trade-off between network cost and message delivery ratio according to the results. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Agendas in online media have become a scholarly focus nearly two decades ago, leading to shifting conceptualizations of what we see as agenda. Thus, agendas and agenda shifts inside online discussions have shown its potential to influence offline deliberation, aggregate support, fuel protest, passing through and/or bypassing traditional media's gatekeeping. Real-time (or nearly-real-time) learning about quick agenda movement inside globalized public debate might be particularly important for international organizations like UN or EU. However, we today lack both knowledge on how agendas move in such discussions and instruments on such analysis. In particular, we are next-to-unaware of to what extent globally relevant themes get contextualized within language-based discussion segments, as well as to what extent the latter depend on each other and lag behind each other in developing agendas and public opinion on quickly evolving issues or conflicts. In this paper, we propose a method of agenda detection based on neural-network text summarization and compare summaries of tweet packages across three languages within the Twitter hashtag #jesuischarlie. We show that sentiment detection may allow for quality assessment of the text summaries, as compared to aggregated sentiment to the original tweets. We show that, outside France, agendas were more interpretational, abstract, and non-contextualized. The pattern of news changing to 'issue outburt' was simultaneous in dense discussion segments and lagged behind in a sparser one. We also show that, globally, main issues of the discussion may be spotted within the first hour.

The article proposes analysis and comparison of the estimates of syllable intelligibility obtained from speech therapist (expert) and using an automatic speech quality assessment algorithm. The relevance of the development of algorithms for automatic assessment of speech quality and syllabic intelligibility is shown. The estimates were obtained based on the analysis of voice recordings of real patients after surgical treatment of oncological diseases of the oral cavity and oropharynx. For comparison with expert opinion, estimates are proposed that were obtained using dynamic time warping (DTW) for time normalization and three metrics: DTW distance, correlation coefficient and Minkowski distance. The obtained quantitative estimates were converted to a binary form using optimization methods for comparison with expert estimates, which are initially binary. Errors between expert estimates and converted quantitative estimates are calculated for each patient individually and in general. Of the listed metrics, the DTW distance was chosen for further use, this metric allows to get estimates that are most consistent with the expert opinion. The task of selecting a combination of metrics for further research is proposed, its limitations are indicated. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

In the last decade, technology has been rapidly evolving, making the humankind more dependent on digital devices than ever. We rely more and more on digitalization and we are excited to welcome emergent technologies like Augmented Reality (AR) into our everyday activities as they show great potential to enhance our standard of life. AR applications are becoming more popular every day and represent the future of human-computer interaction, by revolutionizing the way information is presented and transforming the surroundings into one broad user interface. This paper aims to present the concept of LibrARy – an AR system that intends to create innovative collaborative environments where multiple users can interact simultaneously with computer-generated content. Its main objective is to improve cooperation by enabling co-located users to access a shared space populated with 3D virtual objects and to enrich collaboration between them through augmented interactions. LibrARy will be developed as part of Lib2Life research project which addresses a topic of great importance – revitalizing cultural spaces in the context of recent technology advancements. In light of the research carried out for the Lib2Life project, a need for a more complex collaborative augmented environment has been identified. Therefore, we are now proposing LibrARy - an innovative component which has the potential to enhance the cooperation in multi-participant settings and provide unique interactive experiences. This paper will present in more detail the concept and the functionalities of LibrARy. Cloud Computing (CC) is a paradigm that manages a pool of virtualized resources at infrastructure, platform, and software levels to deliver them as services over the Internet. Cloud Platforms are heterogeneous, and therefore cloud users may face interoperability and integration issues regarding consumption, provisioning, management, and supervision resources among distinct clouds. Due to the lack of standards in such a heterogeneous environment, an organization may face a lock-in situation. A middleware can minimize the effort to overcome lock-in problems. The MIDAS middleware ensures semantic interoperability between Software as a Service (SaaS) and Data as a Service (DaaS), and at the same times provides data integration between DaaS. Currently, MIDAS runtime implementations rely on Cloud Foundry, Amazon Web Services, OpenShift and, Heroku providers. To avoid ambiguity in MIDAS development and deployment an unambiguous definition of MIDAS architectural concepts must be provided. Thus, our work presents a Domain-Specific Modeling Language (DSML) comprising a metamodel of MIDAS semantic architecture and a Unified Modeling Language (UML) profile. To evaluate the DSML expressiveness, we instantiate several middleware models, and the findings demonstrate that our modeling language has an acceptable level of concepts to specify the middleware. Advanced user interfaces continue to improve through better design which in turn translates to more effective development and end use. The intent of this work is to provide design guidelines that can be used across all new applications. An interactive prototype toolkit called the User Interface Prototyping Toolkit (UIPT) was developed to allow sponsors, customers, end users, designers, engineers, and software developers to work together in an iterative fashion to achieve a tailored but guided user interface for the application of interest. Modern styles were applied with a consistent and common look and feel while adhering to solid principle of design, workflow, tasks, layout, coloring, size, animation, and user cues. The design required a general repeatable structure for designers and developers with the intent to allow each new project to understand the overall design and incorporate the features and functionality in accordance with style guide principles. UIPT integrates multiple domains within in the same software application with the ability to efficiently transition an end user's role from one display presentation to another. To date, several projects and user roles have been integrated into the UIPT. In support of this design philosophy an interactive style guide is in continuous development to apply a common reusable design across the multiple projects that utilize the UIPT-based interface. Both the UIPT application and the interactive style guide were built with Unity, a 2D and 3D game engine. Styles for size, color, layout, and other design factors are laid out in the style guide itself which can be run to visualize and examine interactions. This is advantageous for new and experience software developers because the guide itself contains the code and styles necessary to implement the various components of the user interface while supporting design consistency with reusable code for rapid deployment.

The paper proposes a method for controlling the level of expressiveness of speech synthesis by linear interpolation between neural network embeddings corresponding to neutral and fully emotional speech. The deep neural network based speech synthesis model learns the properties of a speech style from a multi-speaker, multi-style speech database. The input features related to speaker and style ID are presented to the model through appropriate embeddings, which allows the model not only to learn the acoustic distance between styles, but also to synthesize speech with an arbitrary level of expressiveness of a particular style. The feasibility of the method has been confirmed by listening tests aimed at establishing the perceived level of style expressiveness, and ensuring that general quality of synthesis from interpolated embeddings is unaffected. The model was trained on approximately 26 h of American English speech by 23 speakers, and the listening tests used speech data of one male and one female speaker. Speech styles considered included happy, angry and apologetic. The results fully confirm that the method is quite successful in controlling the level of style expressiveness, which is one of the key elements of highly natural speech synthesis. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Reducing congestion is one of the most important issues in theme park management. Optimization algorithms for reducing congestion in theme parks using simulation optimization methods have been proposed. In many existing methods, theme park managers directly regulate the movement of visitors. However, restricting the freedom to wander considerably reduces the visitor satisfaction. Thus, when controlling congestion in theme parks, we must consider the trade-off between reducing congestion and restricting freedom. In this paper, we propose an indirect control method for pedestrian flows using congestion forecasts and information distribution. Specifically, we propose a simulation-based heuristic algorithm for the problem of finding an optimal information distribution policy for congestion forecasts satisfying user equilibrium conditions. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
