Intelligent Technical systems are the consequent extension of the concept of Mechatronic systems into the world of software-intensive, networked systems. The concept enhances the functionality and variability of physical (or electro-mechanical) technical systems by adding embedded electronics and software. This adds degrees of freedom (DoF) and controllability to the technical systems. It enhances the effectivity of integrating such systems into distributed infrastructures (e.g. smart grids) via a public network like the internet. Therefore, it enables them for an effective integration into the internet-of-things (IoT) since such Intelligent Technical systems can add and draw significant functionality and optimisation potential from networking with other systems. They can become an integral part of a distributed system which is coupled via the IoT. Nevertheless, it is important to leverage between local control and distributed control carefully according to the requirements of the technical application. A smart heating grid is an example of a distributed cyber-physical system (CPS) which can be coupled via IoT. Such systems include components like block heat and power plants which produce electricity (fed into the public smart grid) and heat. Smart heating grid benefit from components which can convert heat into electricity in a flexible and controllable way and which can change fast from heat provision to electricity provision and vice-versa. An Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) Turbine is such a component since it converts exhaust heat into electricity. This takes heat out of the heating grid and puts electricity into the electricity grid instead. Making such an ORC turbine intelligent means optimizing it for the usage in a smart heating grid. The challenge is to design a control software architecture which allows coupling via IoT on the required interaction level of the distributed system while guaranteeing a safe operation on the local level. Teaching and learning in most current university lectures has remained unchanged for centuries and nowadays, large lecture classes are a fact at universities. technologies such as Classroom Response systems have been designed to ease the adoption of new pedagogical practice in these contexts;however, these pose technological, economic and pedagogical limitations to teachers, students and institutions. In this paper, we present a feasibility study of a system that allows students to take snapshots of paper-based, handwritten solutions to a given task with their devices, and then converts this input to vector graphics that are automatically hosted in a cloud-based storage service, such as Google Drive. The teacher can then discuss students’ solutions and provide elaborate formative feedback in class. We report on the findings of a feasibility study with engineering students in Chile, which validate the practicality of the approach. After this validation we plan to integrate optical character recognition capabilities in the system, in order to support programming and physics education. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.

Reading comprehension is essential for students, because it is a predictor of their academic or professional success, however, it is challenging for many students, even more if they are part of large classrooms. This paper presents a work which uses Design-Based Research with the purpose of combining theories, methods and techniques of the educational sciences to design a collaborative learning activity including peer evaluation to develop the skills of reading comprehension, oral and written communication. It also presents an application for iPads supporting teacher and students performing this activity. The most relevant contributions of the proposed design are two: (1) teachers can in real time automatically configure the members of the work teams using 3 different criteria: random, individual performance hitherto achieved by the student achieved in previous stages of the same activity, or the learning styles of each student prefers;and (2) the prior calibration of an evaluation rubric in order to ensure the quality of the application of the peer evaluation method in order to grade the answers students produce to an individual reading comprehension test. In addition, other methods and techniques are incorporated, such as: monitoring students’ performance in real time;active learning based on peer instruction to support the strategy of reading comprehension implemented. © Springer international Publishing AG 2017.

The practical realization of Network control systems (NCSs) enforces handling network-induced effects: information transfer and processing delay, delay variability, packet loss and reordering, etc. The impact of these phenomena can be limited by using dedicated, expensive real-time networks and control systems, or by implementation of algorithmic methods. This paper presents an adjustable sampling rate (ASR) algorithm to alleviate negative influence of network-induced uncertainty in NCSs, and compares it with previously developed predictor based (PB) one in a common experimental framework. Since the experiments are conducted using standard modules and communication technologies, the reported results are applicable to a relatively broad class of remote control applications and NCSs.

In this paper we propose a general approach for registration of point clouds obtained by various mobile laser scanning technologies. Our method is able to robustly match measurements with significantly different density characteristic including the sparse and inhomogeneous instant 3D (I3D) data taken be self-driving cars, and the dense and regular point clouds captured by mobile mapping systems (MMS) for virtual city generation. The core steps of the algorithm are robust scan segmentation, abstract street object extraction, object based coarse transformation estimation in the Hough accumulator space, and point-level registration refinement. Experimental results are provided using three different sensors: Velodyne HDL64 and VLP16 I3D scanners, and a Riegl VMX450 MMS. Application examples are shown regarding self localization of autonomous cars through crossmodal I3D and MMS frame registration, IMU-less SLAM and change detection based on I3D data.

Current computer network technologies would achieve highly-distributed manufacturing systems (HDMSs), where each computerized facility manages itself autonomously by communicating with other facilities. For HDMSs, we proposed a distributed scheduling method for flexible flow-shop production, where priority of each facility is updated with indirect decision making and information control performed by a communication protocol. This method is composed of processing flows for buffers and machines in production stages. The buffer performs time management in a stage and the machines in the same stage take actions based on the time managed by the buffer. This paper describes an improved method for job production, where no buffer exists and all machines play both roles as a buffer and a machine. In this method, all machines behave according to the processing flow obtained by integrating those for buffers and machines. This method was applied to a simple example and its feasibility was proven.

This paper presents a formulation of a nonlinear model predictive controller for steering of a nuclear reaction in a pressurized water reactor via control rod displacement. The predictive model, based on point kinetic equations, includes an averaged delayed neutron group, thermal dependence on reactivity, heat exchange between temperature and moderator and Xenon poisoning. From the model, a finite horizon optimal control problem is cast in the form of a control Hamiltonian minimization. A basic gradient descent scheme is derived to solve the optimal control problem. The predictive model and gradient descent are used to form the basis from which the model predictive controller is formulated. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.

In NPP, the digital control system which integrated software and hardware are increasingly used to improve dependability and introduce new functionality. Traditional safety analysis can get a good result when handling accidents caused by component failures, but software does not fail in this way. STPA is a new hazard analysis technique based on systems theory rather than reliability theory. It considers the system as a whole (include the hardware and software) to analyze failure and causality of systems and treats safety as a control problem rather than a failure problem. Being a safety-critical system, RPS in NPP needs to be considered carefully in system safety. So, we adopt this new approach to analyze the design process. From the analysis results, we found that causal factors leading to safety accidents identified by STPA included all the hazards identified by the fault tree analysis. Furthermore, there are some causal factors that were identified by STPA only. We utilize these results of the analysis on causation factor to refine the safety requirements and reduce the occurrences of the hazardous scenarios. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.

The digitalized Instrumentation and control (I&C) system of Nuclear power plants can provide many advantages. However, digital control systems induce new failure modes that differ from those of analog control systems. While the cost effectiveness and flexibility of software is widely recognized, it is very difficult to achieve and prove high levels of dependability and safety assurance for the functions performed by process control software, due to the very flexibility and potential complexity of the software itself. Software safety analysis (SSA) was one way to improve the software safety by identify the system hazards caused by software failure. This paper describes the application of a software fault tree analysis (SFTA) at the software design phase. At first, we evaluate all the software modules of the reactor power regulating system in nuclear power plant and identify various hazards. The SFTA was applied to some critical modules selected from the previous step. At last, we get some new hazards that had not been identified in the prior processes of the document evaluation which were helpful for our design. Copyright © 2015 by JSME.

Brain computer Interface (BCI) systems perform intensive processing of the electroencephalogram (EEG) data in order to form control signals for external electronic devices or virtual objects. The main task of a BCI system is to correctly detect and classify mental states in the EEG data. The efficiency (accuracy and speed) of a BCI system depends upon the feature dimensionality of the EEG signal and the number of mental states required for control. Feature reduction can help improve system learning speed and, in some cases, classification accuracy. Here we consider Wave Atom Transform (WAT) of the EEG data as a feature reduction method. WAT takes input data and concentrates its energy in a few transform coefficients. WAT is used as a data preprocessing step for feature extraction. We use artificial neural networks (ANNs) for classification and perform research with varying number of neurons in a hidden layer and different network training functions (Levenberg-Marquardt, Conjugate Gradient Backpropagation, Bayesian Regularization). The novelty of the paper is the application of WAT in the EEG data processing. We conclude that the method can be successfully used for feature extraction and dataset feature reduction in the BCI domain.
