Ad-hoc overlay networks are increasingly used for sharing static bulk content but their promise for scaling the delivery of on-demand, real-time content is yet to be tapped. In this paper we show that overlay networks could be used efficiently to distribute popular real-time streaming media on-demand to a large number of clients. We propose and evaluate OSMOSIS a cache-and-relay end-system multicast approach, whereby a client joining a multicast session caches the stream, and if needed, relays that stream to neighboring clients which may join the multicast session at some later time. OSCMOSIS is fully distributed, scalable, and efficient in terms of network link costs. We present analytical and empirical results of our evaluation of OSMOSIS. Our analysis establishes Osmosis scalability characteristics under a variety of assumptions. Our simulations are over large, synthetic random networks, power-law degree networks, and small-world networks, all of which could well be representative of ad-hoc overlay topologies, as well as over large real router-level Internet maps.

Recently, risk management for the disasters such as earth quick, mountain explosion, seismic sea wave, m addition to ordinal disasters, such as typhoon, rain flooding and snow-slide has been seriously concerned to keep the safety for the residents in many countries. More reliable and robust information system than the conventional business or research oriented information networks must be constructed to normally and correctly perform their functions for residents even though serious disaster happened. In this paper, we propose a unified Wide area Disaster information Network (WDN) using Internet based on the combination of both wired and wireless networks. The. system requirements and their functions of WDN are precisely defined and the various types of information for residents are precisely defined. The prototype system of the disaster information system based on our suggested WDN was built to demonstrate and evaluate its functionality. Through the practical training in the local city for preparation of mountain explosion, we could confirm the usefulness of our suggested system.

Asynchronous and asynchronous integrated multimedia conferencing system ASSIST aims for corresponding to both of realtime conferences and non-realtime conferences. Especially, it is designed for effective information sharing by storing realtime conferencing information including multimedia information such as video and audio, and by making relation to conferencing items and information for asynchronous groupware tools such as schedule/task management, e-mail, and BBS. It is significant to construct efficient development environment for ASSIST, because it requires much effort to build this kind of systems each time in compliance with various purposes or display devices. We have designed a development environment for it and developed the prototype. The prototype system is currently focused on the implementation of facilities for asynchronous type groupware, and it makes developers possible to display tables of databases with sortable links for each field into Web browser by writing only a few line statements. In addition, we have considered integration methods for asynchronous and synchronous type Web-based groupware, applying architecture of web-based slide sharing tool which we have already implemented. In this paper, we describe the design of a development environment for Web-based asynchronous and synchronous integrated groupware systems.

One of the principal characteristics of large scale wireless sensor networks is their distributed, multi-hop nature. Due to this characteristic, applications such as query propagation rely regularly on network-wide flooding. Besides consuming energy and bandwidth resources, the flooded packet may keep the transmission medium within the network busy for too long, reducing overall network throughput. We analyze the impact of the transmission radius on the average settling time - the time at which all nodes in the network finish transmitting the flooded packet. We show that for large wireless networks there exists a transmission range which minimizes the settling time - corresponding to an optimal tradeoff between reception and contention times. © 2002 IEEE.

Rapid changes in service, network and user demand have made conventional distributed information systems mostly unprepared in continuously and timely satisfying the users requests. A high-assurance information system architecture sustained by Push/Pull mobile agents, called Faded Information Field (FIF), has been proposed to achieve adaptability and real-time properly under continuously changing conditions of the system. When the service offer changes, the information environment is restructured in order to match the current user demand in terms of volume and trend. However, once the structure is set, it is still required to permit to the user's Pull mobile agents to autonomously adapt to the rapidly changing demand conditions. The goal of autonomous navigation of the pull mobile agents is in that regard to assure adaptive migration and distribution of the pull-MAs' process to avoid the congestion of certain regions of the FIF when the user demand for information is changing. In this paper, the concept and realization of autonomous Process or Go Navigation technology is proposed under the goal to preserve the timeliness of the system under local congestion conditions in the FIF Effectiveness in fairly reducing the average users' response time under changing demand conditions has been confirmed by simulation.

Social transparency through an enterprise information system refers to the use of digital media by individuals and groups to communicate their own information voluntarily to others within their work environment. It is typically meant to support positive work ethics such as collaboration, trust, efficiency and informed decision-making. Unmanaged social transparency may lead to negative consequences such as information overload, motivating unwanted grouping amongst colleagues and leading to an increased pressure to perform in a certain manner. There is a lack of systematic methods to evaluate and assess the quality of social transparency in general and its shortcomings and risks in particular. Our research aims to provide engineering methods for social transparency platforms as a domain-specific social computing service that can shepherd interactions and analyse content and detect and correct anomalies. As a first step, we conducted a multistage qualitative study, including focus groups and in-depth interviews to explore and conceptualise online social transparency and the risks stemming from its unmanaged implementation. We provide a reference model as a starting point for methods to assess social transparency risks. Our conceptualisation and reference model are based on a goal-oriented requirement engineering (GORE) mindset mainly because transparency and its effects are closely related to intentions, tasks, resources, strategies, and inter-dependencies between organisational actors;all of which are common constructs in GORE.

The Various network resources, including wireless access and multimedia devices, expected in ubiquitous computing environments, have limited geographical service areas and different attributes. This paper proposes adaptive terminal middleware that performs policy-based dynamic resource selection and host-based session management to hide session failures and resource changes from applications and a user. The middleware realizes a Virtual Socket, on top of real sockets, which employs a seamless session handoff mechanism for resource changes, and a resume and retransmission mechanism against disconnection of the wireless link. We implemented the middleware and a test application on top of it to evaluate the performance. © 2002 IEEE.

This paper provides a dynamic IPv6 prefix delegation-based addressing solution to enable Internet connectivity when a Personal Area Network (PAN) is moving between sub-networks. A PAN consists of a cluster of mobile devices, which are dynamically connected with each other and move around together. The approach is based on IPv6 stateless address auto-configuration, and Automatic Prefix Delegation Protocol for IPv6. The problems related to addressing, mobility and IPv6 prefix delegation are evaluated with the constructed prototype. The experiences indicate that the solution is quite light and enables session continuity in subnet changes for any mobile node of a PAN. In addition, the solution does not exclude application of Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6), however Mobile IPv6 is not necessarily needed when Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) based mobility is applied. By using SIP, route optimization is also achieved and IPv6 encapsulation is avoided with UDP-based sessions. However, the solution is not necessarily very scalable to big mobile networks.

This paper presents an asynchronous data sharing mechanism for real-time applications with multiple writers. The mechanism is constructed from a fully asynchronous single writer data sharing mechanism implemented through a timing-based approach, which, being lock-free and loop-free, addresses the problems of priority inversion and unbounded blocking among real-time tasks running under priority-based scheduling. By replicating the single writer data sharing mechanism and modifying its data buffer access control function, the multi-writer data sharing mechanism is constructed such that the desired safety property and feasibility conditions on data buffer allocation are maintained by those single writer data sharing mechanisms. To address the issue on data coherence, all the writer tasks follow a data coherence protocol which is designed with the concept of timestamp ordering. The feasibility condition of this protocol is constructed through analyzing the timing properties of writer tasks. This multi-writer data sharing mechanism stands for another demonstration of the timing-based approach which is an effective alternative to the traditional algorithm-based approaches.

In high-speed network, the principle adopted for a time-sensitive flow control mechanism should be autonomous decentralized control. In this mechanism, each node in a network handles its local traffic flow only on the basis of the information it is aware of, although it is desirable that the decision-making at each node leads to high performance of the network as a whole. To implement this mechanism, we need first to investigate the relationship between the flow control mechanism of each node and network performance. In particular, the stability of the network performance is important. Our previous studies have proposed a simple mechanism for autonomous decentralized flow control and have shown that it has desirable stability. However, since we used a simple, symmetric, and homogeneous network model having a single bottleneck in the evaluation, the results cannot be generalized In this paper, by using more complex network configurations in evaluations, we show that the principle of autonomous decentralized flow control can be applied to high-speed network with asymmetric configurations.
