A self-organized approach to manage a distributed proxy system called Adaptive distributed Caching (ADC) has been proposed previously [8]. We model each proxy as an autonomous agent that is equipped to decide how to deal with client requests using local information. Experimental results show that our ADC algorithm is able to compete with typical hashing-based approaches. This paper gives a full description of the self-organizing distributed algorithm, with a performance comparison based on hits and hops rate. Additional evaluation of the parameters caching-, multiple- and single-table size is also presented. © 2002 IEEE.

A mobile streaming media content delivery network (MSM-CDN) overlay system provides a scalable method for delivering media streams to a large number of clients. With the availability of such a streaming infrastucture, it becomes possible to implement enhanced media services. For example, the wide range and variability of network conditions, as well as processing and display capabilities of these devices will effectively require media streams to be adapted in the network. Each streaming session needs to be tailored to these changing environments in a practical and scalable manner Media transcoding services can be performed by the servers of the MSM-CDN overlay, providing this flexibility. Due to the computational and bandwidth requirements of real-time video transcoding, these services require management of the placement of these tasks on the most appropriate servers, to make best use of the distributed resources available within the network. In this paper we address the media service assignment problem using the notion of service-location management (SLM). An effective load balancing system requires appropriate resource monitoring. We propose alternate SLM resource monitoring schemes. Using media transcoding as a representative service, we compare the performance of these schemes on an MSM-CDN testbed. We present our conclusions on which of these alternate implementations is both most reliable and most extensible to serve a large numbers of mobile client requests.

The emergence of wireless and mobile networks has made possible the introduction of electronic commerce to a new application and research subject: mobile commerce. Understanding or constructing a mobile commerce system is an arduous task because the system involves a wide variety of disciplines and technologies. To facilitate understanding and constructing such a system, this article divides a mobile commerce system into six components: (i) mobile commerce applications, (ii) mobile stations, (iii) mobile middleware, (iv) wireless networks, (v) wired networks, and (vi) host computers. Elements in components related to mobile commerce are described in detail and lists of technologies for component construction are also given. © 2002 IEEE.

We consider a moving object database, which keeps track of object locations and supports location-aware queries. Frequent location update to the database can provide high query accuracy but result in heavy consumption on the scarce communication bandwidth and precious object energy, as well as great index maintenance overhead at the server. We propose the use of safe-region: an area in which an object moves without having to send in a location update. The database records safe-regions for objects, instead of their exact locations for query answering and filtering. We propose three schemes to compute the safe-region based on object movement pattern and study the performance and the impact on query precision and cost. © 2002 IEEE.

The IEC developed the 61499 standard based in function blocks allowing representing components and their interaction in distributed systems. This paper presents a methodology to automate the design of distributed controllers of discrete manufacturing systems, from a simple description of the system. The method takes advantage of the IEC-61499 facilities for deriving a modular representation, which is processed for developing a distributed controller. A case study regarding an assembly system is used to illustrate the proposed methodology;the resulting model is simulated using the FBDK software tool.

The management of large collections of music data in a multimedia database has received much attention in the past few years. In the most of current works, the researchers extract the features, such as melodies, rhythms and chords, from the music data and develop indices that will help to retrieve the relevant music quickly and improve the query accuracy. Several reports have pointed out that these features of music can be transformed and represented in the forms of music feature strings. However, these approaches lack of scalability while increasing the music data. Recently, we proposed an approach to transform the music data into a numeric forms and developed an index structure base on R-tree for effective retrieval. This numeric index approach performed more efficiently than existing string index approaches for music database retrieval. In this paper, we will extend our study to develop a multi-feature numeric index structure for music data. Our experimental results show that the new proposed structure outperforms existing multi-feature string index approaches. © 2002 IEEE.

We have developed a distributed search engine, called Cooperative Search Engine (CSE), in order to retrieve fresh information. In CSE, a local search engine located in each Web server makes an index of local pages. And, a Meta search server integrates these local search engines in order to realize a global search engine. In such a way, the communication delay occurs at retrieval time. So, we have developed several speedup techniques in order to realize fast retrieval. However, these techniques cannot be used for first page retrieval in "Next 10" search if the page has not been searched yet. So, we have proposed Query based Site Selection (QbSS), which is widely available in all cases. In this paper we describe QbSS in detail and discuss its features. © 2002 IEEE.

Core decomposition is one of the most fundamental problems in graph analytics, which is associated with numerous applications, such as community detection, protein network analysis, and system structure analysis. As the sizes of graphs are becoming increasingly large, it is challenging to compute core decomposition on a single machine. In this paper, we study the problem of k-Core decomposition in the distributed environment. Specifically, we propose the distributed Filter-Array k-Core (FAkCore) algorithm, which adopts the commonly used Scatter-Gather framework. We design an auxiliary data structure of running counts for each vertex to track the statistics of its neighbors' core number. It allows us to recompute the core number of a vertex only when the value is updated. Together with an enhanced message filtering mechanism, our method significantly reduces redundant computation and communication in the existing distributed k-Core decomposition algorithm. Experiments on 10 real-world graphs show that our method outperforms the baseline algorithms by 1.4 times on average and up to 2.2 times.

Efficient support for multi-class services is a very important issue in integrated wireless and mobile networks because each type of service has distinct characteristics and Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we propose and analyze a new channel allocation scheme for integrated wireless and mobile networks. In our scheme, traffic is grouped into four different classes: originating real-time service calls, originating non real-time service calls, real-time service handoff request calls, and non real-time service handoff request calls. This new scheme can improve the grade of service of higher priority classes while maintaining the required QoS for lower priority classes. An analytical model is developed based on a multidimensional Markov chain and validated by simulation results. The closed formula of several important system performance parameters, including blocking probability of. originating calls, forced termination probability of real-time service handoff request calls, and average transmission delay of non real-time service calls, are obtained. © 2002 IEEE.

Developing a capacity to test distributed systems hinges on being able to generate the workloads that these systems are to process. Appropriate tools must not only generate these workloads in real-time, but must also be able to sweep through a range of possible workload characteristics to support sensitivity and robustness analyses. Currently, the majority of prior work in this area, including Harpoon, ns-2, OpNet, and tepreplay, has focused on the re-production of workload traces at the network-level. However, for many distributed systems, reproducing application-level workload characteristics is more informative from a testing perspective. This work details such an application-level workload generation tool. The tool itself is distributed and, hence, easily scales to using multiple machines to re-create complex multi-homed workloads. Furthermore, the tool supports the standard abilities to produce both statistically-described workloads, as well as re-instantiating previously-captured workload traces.
