We propose a distributed implementation of the collapse compression technique used by explicit state model checkers to reduce memory usage. This adapatation makes use of lock-free distributed hash tables based on one-sided communication primitives provided by libraries such as Open-SHMEM. We implemented this technique in the distributed version of the model checker Helena. We report on experiments performed on the Grid'5000 cluster with an implementation over OpenMPI. These reveal that, for some models, this distributed implementation can altogether preserve the memory reduction provided by collapse compression and reduce execution times by allowing the exchanges of compressed states between processes.

The increasing complexity and usage of cloud systems have made it challenging for service providers to ensure reliability. This paper highlights two main challenges, namely internal and external factors, that affect the reliability of cloud microservices. Afterward, we discuss the data-driven approach that can resolve these challenges from four key aspects: ticket management, log management, multimodal analysis, and the microservice resilience testing approach. The experiments conducted show that the proposed data-driven AIOps solution significantly enhances system reliability from multiple angles.

System of Mobile Devices (SyD) is a middleware we developed that can he used for implementing collaborative, mobile, and distributed applications over heterogeneous devices, data stores, and computing environments. Current prototype implementation of SyD consists of five modules. These modules provide ease of programming in the areas of distributed communication, remote method invocation, service publication and discovery, directory services, distributed service invocation and aggregation, event handling, collaborative link creation and enforcement. A central module is SyDLink which allows SyD-based applications to create "coordination" links. Coordination links represent dependencies among heterogeneous devices and application components. Based on the underlying event-and-trigger mechanism, they allow automatic updates as well as real-lime enforcement of global constraints and interdependencies. SyDLink objects provide the underlying mechanism in SyD to enforce atomic execution of distributed transactions. We explain and demonstrate the use of SyDLink objects via a running example, a collaborative SyD calendar application, throughout the paper. © 2002 IEEE.

Mobile IP route optimization and Mobile IP local registration are two approaches to solve performance problems associated with the base Mobile IP protocol proposed by IETF. The route optimization scheme solves the triangular routing problem by introducing the binding cache concept. The local registration scheme reduces the large overhead for location management by processing the mobile host's registration request only at a local foreign agent. In this paper, we present a mailbox-based approach to take advantages of both approaches. Each mobile host migrated to a foreign network is associated with a mailbox, which can be decoupled with the owner host, and packets destined to the receiver will be delivered to the mailbox whose address is cached in the sender. Separating mailbox from its owner host allows us to achieve adaptive location management, while at the same time buffering incoming packets in the mailbox located somewhere in the network closer to the receiver reduces the retransmission cost. The dynamic migration of mailbox also eliminates the need of pre-structuring mobility agents into hierarchy which is a necessary in the local registration scheme. © 2002 IEEE.

Virtual CPU (VCPU) scheduling algorithms that efficiently manage processing-resource at the machine virtualization layer are key to facilitate resource sharing and workload consolidation in Clouds. Such algorithms are mostly inherited from pre-virtualization designs, thus need to be revamped and re-evaluated. This paper presents a simulation framework based on SAN model to rapidly evaluate Virtual CPU scheduling algorithms. The paper also demonstrates an evaluation of three VCPU scheduling algorithms using this framework.

This study describes effective rate controls regarding both end-to-end receiver's reports and intermediate network information for streaming delivery systems on next-generation mobile communication networks. Moreover, the method has been implemented in our mobile QoS systems for Windows. Results of evaluation experiments with an IMT-2000 network simulator showed that network information-based rate control is superior to end-to-end control in terms of the number of lost packets and bandwidth usage at specified channel and error rates. Moreover, they indicated that cooperative method using network information and end-to-end receiver's reports are quite effective for retransmission and session control, which is indispensable for mobile streaming systems. © 2002 IEEE.

Byzantine fault detection (BFD) techniques are promising approaches for better scalability and practicality, even though they cannot mask Byzantine faults like Byzantine fault tolerance (BFT) techniques. However, the existing BFD protocol for database systems has suffered from long latency since it synchronously makes an agreement on the order of transactions between replicas when executing the transactions. In this paper, we explore an alternative BFD approach for database systems, which defers the expensive agreement and detects Byzantine faults lazily rather than detecting them in real-time. We discuss the challenges and design overview of our approach. We also present preliminary experimental results showing the benefit of our approach.

Data Stream Management systems (DSMSs) have been proposed to address the data processing needs of situation-monitoring applications that collect high-speed data from various sources, compute results on-the-fly, and take actions in real-time. Traditional DSMSs are not suitable for processing military applications which involve data belonging to multiple security levels and there are rules governing information flow. Moreover, a centralized DSMS may not be suitable for military applications. Towards this end, we propose a distributed multilevel secure DSMS systems. We provide an architecture and an implementation and demonstrate how simple queries can be executed in our system.

Performance modeling of cloud computing centers is a challenging task due to complexity, shared resources and large scale of such systems. Introducing heterogeneous resources and workloads make the analysis even more complicated. In this paper, we propose a layered stochastic performance model applicable to cloud centers with wide range of heterogeneous physical and virtual resources as well as task characteristics without sacrificing the scalability, granularity and simplicity. Under various parameters and configurations, key performance metrics such as task blocking probability and total delay incurred on user tasks are obtained. The results also reveal practical insights into capacity planning for cloud computing centers.

Mobile device utilization continues to experience considerable growth and the privacy and security of these devices are becoming more critical with their continued rise in utilization. In this paper, we discuss the components of a mobile operating system that require enhancements in the security and privacy controls that are inherent in modern mobile operating systems. We then propose a policy that can be used to provide the semantics of defining additional security and privacy controls. Using this policy, we propose a framework that can be utilized by an application to enforce a user-defined policy while taking into account the computing constraints of a mobile platform. We then describe the implementation of a limited prototype of this framework and demonstrate its effectiveness in enforcing a user-defined policy.
