Mobile cloud computing, the combination of mobile computing and cloud computing, is becoming a hot topic of the industry especially in healthcare. In this paper, we describe our design and prototype implementation of a cross-platform mobile activity monitoring system on the cloud. The system incorporates HTTP 2.0 with SPDY to enable secure and fast server push of medical information to individual users. Moreover, the system uses MATLAB graphs to show the vital data and analysis results and provides a user-friendly way to access personalized healthcare.

Biological data analysis is typically implemented using a pipeline that combines many data analysis tools and meta-databases. These pipelines must scale to very large datasets, and therefore often require parallel and distributed computing. There are many infrastructure systems for data-intensive computing. However, most biological data analysis pipelines do not leverage these systems. An important challenge is therefore to integrate biological data analysis frameworks with data-intensive computing infrastructure systems. In this paper, we describe how we have extended data-intensive computing systems to support unmodified biological data analysis tools. We also describe four approaches for integrating the extended systems with biological data analysis frameworks, and discuss challenges for such integration on production platforms. Our results demonstrate how biological data analysis pipelines can benefit from infrastructure systems for data-intensive computing.

Water hammer is a hydraulic phenomenon occurring in cases of sudden load drop e.g. hydraulic turbine shutdown. These undesirable events lead to fast transients processes which require taking into account the distributed parameters. As a system with distributed parameters, the most realistic mathematical model of the water hammer phenomenon is that described by hyperbolic Partial Differential Equations. The qualitative evaluation of this phenomenon is performed by means of its computational model obtained by using a loworder robust computational algorithm previously introduced. Simulated experiments are discussed from the points of view of the engineering problem as well as of the numerical approach.

The growing usage of software and hardware in our everyday lives has lead to paradigms such as Cloud computing, Edge computing, and the Internet of Things. The combination of these paradigms results in distributed and heterogeneous target environments: components of an application often need to be deployed in different environments such as clouds, private data centers, and small devices. This makes the deployment of distributed applications a complex and error-prone challenge as deployment systems have to (i) support cloud deployments, (ii) determine the location of physical resources, (iii) cope with security mechanisms preventing inbound communication, and (iv) use hardware-constrained devices. In this paper, we present an approach for the automated deployment of distributed applications on heterogeneous target environments consisting of public and private clouds, and devices. We especially tackle the issue of deploying components in environments having restricted inbound communication capabilities. We prototypically implemented and compared our approach based on a smart home scenario using TOSCA and the OpenTOSCA Ecosystem.

We describe a technique for automatic synthesis of workflows in service-oriented systems [7] from a type-theoretic specification of coordination requirements. The technique presented involves formal semantics-based, automatic synthesis of service coordination workflows from the business logic of the clients using type and effect inference. The type and effect deduction, apart from synthesizing the workflow, provides formal proofs that the business requirements of the clients in a service-oriented system are met. The service descriptions and the business requirements are specified as a set of type judgements in an (intuitionistic) type theory. Workflows can be generated from a (type and effect) inference of the requirements from the "service theory".

Global financial crime activity is driving demand for machine learning solutions in fraud prevention. However, prevention systems are commonly serviced to financial institutions in isolation, and few provisions exist for data sharing due to fears of unintentional leaks and adversarial attacks. Collaborative learning advances in finance are rare, and it is hard to find real-world insights derived from privacy-preserving data processing systems. In this paper, we present a collaborative deep learning framework for fraud prevention, designed from a privacy standpoint, and awarded at the recent PETs Prize Challenges. We leverage latent embedded representations of varied-length transaction sequences, along with local differential privacy, in order to construct a data release mechanism which can securely inform externally hosted fraud and anomaly detection models. We assess our contribution on two distributed data sets donated by large payment networks, and demonstrate robustness to popular inference-time attacks, along with utility-privacy trade-offs analogous to published work in alternative application domains.

Privacy preserving data clustering is a useful method for extracting intrinsic cluster structures from distributed databases keeping personal privacy. In a previous research, a model of performing Fuzzy c-Lines clustering was proposed, where a privacy preserving scheme of k-means-type model was adopted with cryptographic calculation. This paper further improves the model for handling incomplete data ignoring the influences of missing values. The element-wise clustering criterion enables to derive local principal component vectors in each data sources by considering minimization of low-rank approximation of observed elements only. Then, fuzzy memberships of each object are calculated in a collaborative manner among organizations, where partial distances between objects and prototypes are derived with cryptographic framework so that intra-organization information is kept secret. The characteristic features of the proposed method are demonstrated through numerical experiments.

Current generation of distributed real-time systems requires more flexibility and the ability of changing its behaviour at run time. This paper presents a model and an algorithm for QoS-aware service composition in distributed systems with real-time requirements. This model is applicable in application domains where temporal guarantees and flexibility are needed, such as remote monitoring, control or surveillance. Our approach combines concepts from the service oriented paradigm and distributed real-time systems. We propose a concrete system model based on a holistic time-triggered-based approach for design and configuration and two composition algorithms: an exhaustive one that computes the optimal service combination in terms of a figure of merit, suitable for off-line composition;and a distributed one, based on heuristics, that can be used for on-line distributed composition.

In recent distributed multimedia applications such as multi-site teleconferencing, different video streams from different locations are distributed to a number of receivers via multicasting on the Internet, and each receiver simultaneously plays back these videos on his/her terminals. These multicast streams may often be delivered on the same bottleneck link, therefore they are likely to cause competition with each other for the limited bandwidth. In general, layered multicast is considered efficient for avoiding congestion by letting only the affected receivers degrade their receiving rates. However in case of bandwidth competition by multiple layered multicast streams (inter-stream bandwidth competition), these receivers may choose different streams to be degraded, which may result in slow convergence and low utility of bandwidth. In this paper we propose a protocol to coordinate those receivers in a distributed manner for the fast convergence to an optimal layer subscription in the event of inter-stream bandwidth competition, based on application-specific priorities given by receivers to the layers. In our protocol, the number of messages exchanged in the event of congestion is considerably kept low based on tree topology information, obtained by a multicast tree inference technique. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of our technique on networks with about 200 nodes. © 2002 IEEE.
