There is an increasingly prominent trend in many big data scientific applications to move a substantial portion of or even all of the computing workflow executions to a cloud environment, which calls for an effective and efficient solution to optimize the performance of such workflow applications. We focus on computing workflows of streaming applications, and consider a faulty cloud environment where both nodes and links may fail at a certain probability. We tackle a tri-objective optimization problem that reduces the total energy consumption while enforcing a bound on the throughput, and a constraint on the reliability. A layer-based mapping algorithm is proposed to schedule each subtask in the workflow to an appropriate node in the cloud in order to achieve three objectives (energy, throughput, and reliability) in a distributed manner. The proposed scheme automatically recomputes a mapping solution adapting to the network changes after a certain period. The performance superiority of the proposed scheme is illustrated by an extensive set of comparisons with other existing methods.

In recent years, the 'whole chain' development level of China's intellectual property creation, protection and application has been greatly improved. At the same time, cloud computing technology is booming, and intellectual property data distributed platforms based on cloud storage are emerging one after another. Firstly, this paper introduces the domestic intellectual property cloud platform services from the perspectives of government, state-owned enterprises and private enterprises;Secondly, four typical distributed platforms provided by commercial resources are selected to summarize the problems faced by the operation mode of domestic intellectual property services;Then, it compares and discusses the functions and service modes of domestic intellectual property distributed platform, and takes TSITE IP as an example, puts forward the design and construction strategies of intellectual property protection, intellectual property operation service distributed platform and operation service mode under the background of information age. Finally, according to the development of contemporary information technology, this paper puts forward challenges and development direction for the future development of intellectual property platform. © 2021 IEEE.

Cloud service provider's revenue is tightly related with the QoS and resources utilization. One optimal strategy is to timely allocate resources in a fine-grained mode according to the actual resources demand of applications. The necessary precondition of this approach is obtaining future load information in advance. CPU has a significant effect on the performance of applications. So CPU load prediction is one of the most important requirements in the Cloud resources provisioning. We propose a multi-step-ahead CPU load prediction method based on Support Vector Regression which is suitable for the dynamic characteristics of applications and the complex Cloud computing environment. Kalman smoothing technology is integrated to further reduce the prediction error. Real trace data were used to verify the prediction accuracy and stability of our method, comparing with AR, BPNN and standard SVR.

Sensing tongue movements enables various applications in hands-free interaction and alternative communication. We propose BARTON, a BARometer based low-power and robust TONgue movement sensing system. Using a low sampling rate of below 50 Hz, and only extracting simple temporal features from in-ear pressure signals, we demonstrate that it is plausible to distinguish important tongue gestures (left, right, forward) at low power consumption. We prototype BARTON with commodity earpieces integrated with COTS barometers for in-ear pressure sensing and an ARM micro-controller for signal processing. Evaluations show that BARTON yields 94% classification accuracy and 8.4mW power consumption, which achieves comparable accuracy, but consumes 44 times lower energy than the state-of-the-art microphone-based solutions. BARTON is also robust to head movements and operates with music played directly from earphones.

In this paper, we consider the construction of a large scale wireless sensor network (WSN) by means of distributed network association with scalability. We design a network association mechanism that allows each router to have its own addressing space for unique addressing of its child nodes based on a pre-initialized addressing tree. We also design a device selection algorithm that can locate routers throughout the whole deployment area using a minimum number of routers (i.e., minimizing the energy consumption). Thus, nodes can securely join the network through a sufficient number of neighboring routers, with the use of a uniquely allocated address in a distributed manner. Finally, the performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated by computer simulation, showing remarkable performance improvement over conventional schemes when applied to the construction of a large scale WSN.

The advent of virtualization technologies and cloud computing has improved application provisioning speed, resource utilization, fault-management, availability using auto-failover and performance optimization using auto-scaling in distributed computing environments. However, heterogeneous virtualization technologies offered by different service providers with disparate infrastructure and their orchestration and management systems have also increased the complexity of managing distributed applications and vendor lock-in. In this paper we utilize new computing, management and programming models introduced using the DIME network architecture to provide end to end service visibility and control across distributed physical or virtual infrastructure. Resulting decoupling of application and service transaction management from myriad distributed infrastructure management systems at run-time enables policy based, secure, service mobility across physical servers or virtual machines deployed in datacenters or public clouds. Using the new architecture we have implemented service self-repair, auto-scaling, live-migration and end-to-end service transaction security independent of server and network security mechanisms.

Cyber-Physical systems (CPS) represent the technical foundation to solve some of the most important societal and environmental problems. Traditionally, CPS have been considered tightly integrated solutions that are aimed at specific application domains. More recently, a broader view of distributed cyber-physical systems (DCPS) has emerged, where interacting components are more loosely coupled and real-time constraints and safety concerns are less dominating. To develop a common infrastructure for a large-scale DCPS, it is critical to develop a framework that allows for horizontal integration of CPS components. In this paper, we discuss the vision, requirements, and design of such a framework. We present several specific technical challenges that need to be addressed in this context as well as potential solution approaches. We also provide examples to illustrate how our framework can lead to innovative new uses that can have meaningful impact on practical problems.

Data Centers (DC) used to support Cloud services often consist of tens of thousands of networked machines under a single roof. The significant capital outlay required to replicate such infrastructures constitutes a major obstacle to practical implementation and evaluation of research in this domain. Currently, most research into Cloud computing relies on either limited software simulation, or the use of a testbed environments with a handful of machines. The recent introduction of the Raspberry Pi, a low-cost, low-power single-board computer, has made the construction of a miniature Cloud DCs more affordable. In this paper, we present the Glasgow Raspberry Pi Cloud (PiCloud), a scale model of a DC composed of clusters of Raspberry Pi devices. The PiCloud emulates every layer of a Cloud stack, ranging from resource virtualisation to network behaviour, providing a full-featured Cloud computing research and educational environment.

New vehicular applications demand more computing power and real-time processing. As modern vehicles are equipped with computationally powerful but often redundant and under-utilized onboard units for autonomous driving, a network of connected vehicles can form a vehicular cloud (VC) that can provide computing services among themselves or to other devices. In this paper, we evaluate the computing performance of a VC on a highway in congested traffic. We assume that the vehicles join and leave VC at random times. Thus, the number of vehicles in the VC will be time-varying. The residency times of the vehicles in the VC will be correlated because of traffic congestion. To enable the realization of VC in the future, we need to know its computing performance that considers its dynamic nature and concurrent execution of the tasks. In this work, we determine the completion time of a job with multiple tasks with random execution times. More specifically, we derive the probability density function of the job completion time as a function of the system parameters. We provide numerical results to demonstrate the utilization of the analysis and simulation results to confirm the correctness of the analysis.
