Utility computing is a form of computer service whereby the company providing the service charges the users for using the system resources. In this paper, we study a load balancing scheme whose objective is to minimize the cost for executing jobs in a utility computing system with centralserver computer model. The computers in the system are connected by a single-channel communications network. The performance of the studied load balancing scheme is compared with other existing schemes using various heterogeneous distributed system models.

Intrusion detection has been widely studied in both industry and academia, but cybersecurity analysts always want more accuracy and global threat analysis to secure their systems in cyberspace. Big data represent the great challenge of intrusion detection systems, making it hard to monitor and analyze this large volume of data using traditional techniques. Recently, deep learning has been emerged as a new approach which enables the use of Big Data with a low training time and high accuracy rate. In this paper, we propose an approach of an IDS based on cloud computing and the integration of big data and deep learning techniques to detect different attacks as early as possible. To demonstrate the efficacy of this system, we implement the proposed system within Microsoft Azure Cloud, as it provides both processing power and storage capabilities, using a convolutional neural network (CNN-IDS) with the distributed computing environment Apache Spark, integrated with Keras Deep Learning Library. We study the performance of the model in two categories of classification (binary and multiclass) using CSE-CIC-IDS2018 dataset. Our system showed a great performance due to the integration of deep learning technique and Apache Spark engine. © 2021 IEEE.

With maturing technology agents are now a viable choice for distributed computing, also for systems with requirements on dependability and scalability. Agent platforms provide common services to applications developed as agents. Given the abundance of available platforms it is not easy to select an agent platform given a set of applications requirements. Evaluations of relevant properties of agent platforms are therefore needed but unfortunately few up-to-date evaluations exist. In this paper we introduce and evaluate the three recent agent platforms JADE, Tryllian and SAP. Focus of the evaluation is the important properties of performance, security and scalability. We conclude that all platforms perform very well, but that platform architecture heavily influences the performance.

Mining large data sets is no longer the prerogative of computer scientists - specialists in a wide variety of domains are performing analytics as a day-to-day activity. Often such analyses are specific to the domain and analysts are required to devise new algorithms or techniques. For such scenarios, providing a high-level programming environment that delivers high performance on clusters is a challenge. We propose a framework that supports high-level programming using domain abstractions in data mining while delivering scalable performance on commodity clusters i.e. clusters of multi-core workstations. This framework includes a domain specific programming language, DWARF, to enable data mining specialists to rapidly prototype algorithms. DWARF is supported by a compiler that automatically parallelizes code by identifying domain specific patterns and translating them to parallel code that exploits data parallelism and task parallelism. The compiler generates code for a hybrid virtual machine supporting distributed memory model at the top level and shared memory model nested within. The code generated by the compiler can be scheduled on commodity clusters. We compare the proposed framework with other frameworks commonly used for data mining on distributed platforms.

This paper presents NOA-AID a network architecture for targeting highly distributed systems, composed of a large set of distributed stream processing devices, aimed at adaptive information indexing, aggregation and discovery in streams of data. The architecture is organized on two layers. The upper layer is aimed at supporting the information discovery process by providing a distributed index structure. The lower layer is mainly devoted to resource aggregation based on epidemic protocols targeting highly distributed and dynamic scenarios, well suited to stream-oriented scenarios. We present a theoretical study on the costs of information management operations, also giving an empirical validation of such findings. Finally, we presented an experimental evaluation of the ability of our solution to be effective and efficient in retrieving meaningful information in streams on a highly-dynamic and distributed scenario.

The advances in wireless communication and mobile computing make new types of applications possible. In this context, users' navigation becomes one of the most popular applications. The existing approaches to compute a route are either server- or client-based. The first one computes the route on a server and sends back the result to the mobile device. The second one computes it directly on the mobile device. Both approaches are related to some pros and cons. In this paper we propose anew combined approach supporting the privacy of the user while maintaining the data accuracy at the same time.

The Second international Workshop on Cyber-Physical systems Security and PrivaCy (CPS-SPC'16) is being held in conjunction with the 23rd ACM CCS conference. This second edition follows a successful workshop held with ACM CCS in 2015. The workshop was motivated by several observations. First, cyber-physical systems represent the new frontier for cyber risk. The attack surface imposed by the convergence of computing, communications and physical control represents unique challenges for security researchers and practitioners. Second, majority of the published literature addressing the security and privacy of CPS reflect a field still in its infancy. As such, the overall principles, models, and theories for securing CPS have not yet emerged. Third, the organizers of this workshop strongly felt that a premiere forum associated with a premiere conference was needed for rapidly publishing diverse, multidisciplinary in progress work on the security and privacy of CPS and galvanizing the research community. The set of accepted papers reflect this vision. We have organized an exciting program for this workshop and look forward to active participation in this and future workshops.

The SCoPE@Scuola initiative was born with the aim to inspire curiosity in high school students about High Performance computing (HPC) and Parallel and distributed computing (PDC). The HPC/PDC world could be an interesting matter for students because is a necessary tool to solve challenging problems in science and technology and it provides context where a plenty of knowledge acquired at school can find a real application. In fact, the themes related to HPC/PDC involve a large range of knowledge and skills: from mathematical modelling of problems to algorithm design, from software implementation to design and management of complex computer systems. The initiative, begun at the end of 2014, involved several schools in the Naples (Italy) district, and has also been used for work-based learning activities and projects aimed to avoid students "dropouts". The results collected during all the last years make us hopeful that such initiative could be useful both to increment students awareness about the utility in the real world of all the knowledge acquired at school and to help them in their future educational and/or working choices.

In a microgrid, distributed energy resources (DERs) can supply energy for consumers. How to schedule energy between DERs and consumers and reduce the dependence on the main power grid is of extreme importance for a microgrid. In this paper, a multi-round double auction mechanism is proposed to achieve coordinated and optimal energy dispatch, which allows multiple sellers to trade energy with multiple buyers through adjusting prices dynamically in each round until the buyers' bids are not less than the sellers' asks. Different from existing auctions, the excessive energy of one seller can be divided and traded to multiple buyers, and one buyer can purchase the energy from multiple sellers. The simulation results show that the proposed mechanism significantly reduces auction rounds and the dependence on the main power grid and improves auction utility when compared with the existing double auction. © 2021 IEEE.

Awareness systems are a class of computer mediated communication systems that help individuals or groups build and maintain a peripheral awareness of each other. In this paper a service-oriented platform is presented, that supports awareness and informal social communication between community members, distributed over multiple smart home environments. The ASTRA platform, developed in the context of an EU research project, provides a generalized solution to the development of awareness applications that are based on the concept of pervasive awareness, i.e., where awareness information is generated as a result of using personal and home devices and smart objects, which capture and exchange information about the user semi-autonomously.
