In this paper, we propose a novel mobile agent tracking mechanism based on hashing. To allow our system to adapt to variable workloads, dynamic rehashing is supported The proposed mechanism scales well with both the number of agents and the number of moving and querying operations. We also report on its implementation in the Aglets platform and present performance results.

We present a self-stabilizing algorithm for finding a generalized maximal matching (b-matching) in an arbitrary distributed network. We show that the algorithm converges in 0 (m) moves under an unfair central demon independent of the b-values at different nodes. The algorithm is capable of working with multiple types of demons (schedulers) as is the most recent algorithm in [1, 2].

Establishing the correctness of reliable distributed protocols supporting critical applications necessitates modular/compositional approaches to tackle the inherent complexity of these protocols. Efforts involved in the specification and verification of these reliable distributed protocols can be considerably reduced if the protocol is composed utilizing smaller components (building-blocks) possessing individual functionalities that are integral parts of the overall protocol operation. In this paper we present the modular composition of a transaction processing protocol, namely the three-phase commit (3PC) protocol utilizing concepts of category theory. Specifically, we illustrate how the overall global properties of the protocol can be proved by utilizing constructs of local sub-properties of the inherent building blocks of the 3PC protocol.

The increasing use of computers to manage everyday business poses problems for workers when they are away from their home environment. There are two key problems: How can a mobile worker share a limited part of their home environment with colleagues in a foreign environment while maintaining its security,? How can a mobile worker identify and interact with local services available in a foreign environment? This paper describes a scheme for controlling access to pervasive Web services together with a tangible user interface for their presentation.

We present TOTA ("Tuples On The Air"), a novel middleware for supporting adaptive context-aware application in dynamic network scenarios. The key idea in TOTA is to rely on spatially distributed tuples for both representing contextual information and supporting uncoupled and adaptive interactions between application components. The middleware propagates tuples across a network on the basis of application-specific patterns and adaptively re-shapes the resulting distributed structures accordingly to changes in the network topology. Application components can locally "sense" these structures and exploit them to acquire contextual information and carry on complex coordination activities in an adaptive way. Several examples show the effectiveness of the TOTA approach.

Sensing the state of the environment is an important source for context-aware applications. Several approaches exist to provide sensor information to mobile application nodes. As the extreme cases we have pure infrastructures and pure ad hoc networks. In order to allow sensor platforms to serve both of these approaches, we have designed a universal sensor platform and integrated it into an infrastructure-based approach as well as into ad hoc networks. In this paper we discuss the requirements on such a platform, the design, and the experiences.

As the size and the complexity of software systems increases, a proper decomposition approach is strongly required, in particular to address issues about "when" and "how" distribution and elaboration have to be performed. In this paper we present RTP (Real Time Performers), a general-purpose architecture for the development of modular and configurable real-time distributed systems. It is based on basic and formally-modelled notions: projectors (data transferring components), state machines, command traces, topologies and strategists. The RTP decomposition approach is based on the component-connector pattern, refined with the specialization of the connector role. RTP rationale is the "externalization" and formalization of communication issues between components, with a strong separation between alignment mechanisms and policies.

On interconnected computer network environments, multimedia communication systems are usefully for the users to communicate with each other.. The systems must guarantee end-to-end QoS (quality of service) according to requirements from the system users and available resources. If the system can dynamically use translator or mixer functions defined by RTP, more flexible peer-to-peer communication is realized. In this paper, we design 6 new middleware system with transcoding functions for flexible intercommunication environment by relocatable decision.

Over the past 10 years, Thales Naval Nederland (TNN) has successfully applied a pure data-centric architecture called SPLICE in its naval Combat Management systems This fielded architecture provides the essential non-functional properties as demanded in these mission-critical environments such as (real-time) performance, scalability, fault-tolerance and evolve-ability. Thales recently contributed this knowledge and experience in a joint submission regarding the OMG's Data Distribution Service (DDS) for Real-time systems. The SPLICE architecture is characterized by autonomous applications with minimal dependencies where function and interaction are clearly separated and SPLICE-agents act as real-time information brokers. SPLICE thus offers a normalized environment that is designed once for all applications and which delivers 'the right information at the right place at the right time'.

Electronic commerce users increasingly demand new kind of services, which can be adapted to their needs. Focusing on this, we present dynamic e-services (electronic commerce of services). These services have some special characteristics that determine their dynamism. For example, they may involve several users, the number depending on the specific service. These users could interchange information that is grouped into steps. The relationship among that group of steps could be modelled with the help of a workflow. To develop e-services with these characteristics, we have defined a methodology that we present here. To illustrate its use, we also present an example of development of e-service: collaborative edition with moderator.
