This paper presents an approach to distributed systems performance and capacity management. It begins with a definition of the goals of distributed systems performance and capacity management. It then explores three levels of the effort, which are: Discrete Element Management, Process Management and Application Management. It discusses the metrics that are available in each level, and the comparative benefits of each approach. Finally, it identifies some functional capabilities that distributed systems management tools should have in order to meet the goals initially presented. Examples are drawn from a variety of distributed platforms, including Windows NT, UNIX and MVS.

With advances in physical layer technologies, WLANs are now connected with wired networks and act as parts of the entire networks. Since demands for QoS sensitive applications are extremely high, WLANs, as parts of heterogeneous networks, are required to be QoS-aware. In this paper we present a new QoS-aware multi-access scheme, called ADCF, designed to assure weighted fair queuing in a purely distributed way and to achieve admission control per frame. The results of simulations show that ADCF yields stable weighted fair queuing with consistent performance under most conditions. In most cases, ADCF outperforms DCF of IEEE 802.11 and EDCF of IEEE 802.11e. Also, ADCF guarantees starvation free channel access for a low priority flow.

Software systems for social media analysis provide algorithms and tools for extracting useful knowledge from user-generated social media data. ParSoDA (Parallel Social Data Analytics) is a Java library for developing parallel data analysis applications based on the extraction of useful knowledge from social media data. This library aims at reducing the programming skills necessary to implement scalable social data analysis applications. This work describes how the ParSoDA library has been extended to execute applications on Apache Spark. Using a cluster of 12 workers, the Spark version of the library reduces the execution time of two case study applications exploiting social media data up to 42%, compared to the Hadoop version of the library.

Wireless Sensor Networks are edging closer to widespread feasibility with recent research showing promising results in developing and adapting new mechanisms to suit their environment. Secure communication between these distributed wireless devices is a desired characteristic, especially in scenarios where these sensors will be used for military and other mission-critical operations. This paper highlights some of the research challenges for extending secure communications over these resource-limited devices and points out why current protocols do not scale well in this unique application realm. A new key setup protocol (SEKEN) is proposed that neatly fits into the requirements of these device types. The performance of SEKEN is then analyzed against some other possible key setup mechanisms. Our initial results confirm that it performs better under most of the conditions anticipaied for general wireless sensor networks.

This paper introduces GeoSpark an in-memory cluster computing framework for processing large-scale spatial data. GeoSpark consists of three layers: Apache Spark Layer, Spatial rdD Layer and Spatial Query Processing Layer. Apache Spark Layer provides basic Spark functionalities that include loading /storing data to disk as well as regular rdD operations. Spatial rdD Layer consists of three novel Spatial Resilient distributed Datasets (SrdDs) which extend regular Apache Spark rdDs to support geometrical and spatial objects. GeoSpark provides a geometrical operations library that accesses Spatial rdDs to perform basic geometrical operations (e.g., Overlap, Intersect). System users can leverage the newly defined SrdDs to effectively develop spatial data processing programs in Spark. The Spatial Query Processing Layer efficiently executes spatial query processing algorithms (e.g., Spatial Range, Join, KNN query) on SrdDs. GeoSpark also allows users to create a spatial index (e.g., R-tree, Quad-tree) that boosts spatial data processing performance in each SrdD partition. Preliminary experiments show that GeoSpark achieves better run time performance than its Hadoop-based counterparts (e.g., SpatialHadoop).

Streaming languages are adequate for expressing many applications quite naturally and have been proven to be a good approach for taking advantage of the intrinsic parallelism of modern CPU architectures. While numerous works focus on improving the throughput of streaming programs, we rather focus on satisfying quality-of-service requirements of streaming applications executed along-side non-streaming processes. We monitor synchronous dataflow (SDF) programs at runtime both at the application and system levels in order to identify violations of quality-of-service requirements. Our monitoring requires the programmer to provide the expected throughput of its application (e.g 25 frames per second for a video decoder), then takes full benefit from the compilation of the SDF graph to detect bottlenecks in this graph and identify causes among processor or memory overloading. It can then be used to perform dynamic adaptations of the applications in order to optimize the use of computing and memory resources.

The subsystems that compose a High Performance computing (HPC) platform (e.g. CPU, memory, storage and network) are often designed and configured to deliver exceptional performance to a wide range of workloads. As a result, a large part of the power that these subsystems consume is dissipated as heat even when executing workloads that do not require maximum performance. Attempts to tackle this problem include technologies whereby operating systems and applications can reconfigure subsystems dynamically, such as by using Dynamic Voltage and Frequency Scaling (DVFS) for CPUs, Low Power Idle (LPI) for network components, and variable disk spinning for HDDs. Most previous work has explored these technologies individually to optimise workload execution and reduce energy consumption. We propose a framework that performs on-line analysis of an HPC system in order to identify application execution patterns without a priori information of their workload. The framework takes advantage of reoccurring patterns to reconfigure multiple subsystems dynamically and reduce overall energy consumption. Performance evaluation was carried out on Grid'5000(1) considering both traditional HPC benchmarks and real-life applications.

Cloud computing enables more and more online services deployed in virtual machines (VMs), making fast VM fault tolerance particularly crucial. Unfortunately, despite much effort, achieving fast VM fault tolerance remains an open problem. A traditional way to provide VM fault tolerance is the active-passive approach, which frequently transfers tremendous updated states, including memory and storage, of a primary VM to a suspended secondary VM. The other emerging approach, namely the active-active approach, runs the secondary VM concurrently with the primary. Compared to active-passive, active-active is faster because it only performs the transfer when the externally visible states (e.g., network outputs) of the primary and secondary diverge. However, active-active aggravates the performance issue on I/O intensive workloads. In existing active-active systems, storage replication protocols hold updated storage states from both the primary and secondary on the secondary, incurring excessive I/O contention. For instance, both our evaluation and prior study show that a well-engineered active-active system, COLO, degrades the throughput of I/O intensive services by up to 61.6%. To tackle this open problem, this paper presents GANNET, a fast and general storage replication protocol for active-active VM fault tolerance systems. It greatly alleviates the I/O contention on the secondary's storage by efficiently buffering the updated disk states from both the primary and secondary VM in memory. GANNET carries a lightweight storage checkpoint algorithm to avoid consuming too much memory. GANNET is proved to be as reliable as existing storage replication protocols. We integrated GANNET into two popular active active systems. Evaluation on six widely used services shows that GANNET incurred 15.9% overhead compared to the native executions and outperformed COLO's storage replication protocol by 1.2X similar to 2.6X. GANNET'S source code is available ***/hku-systems/gannet.

Power engineers who are striving to improve real-time attribute of power grid applications are ill equipped with software engineering methods and tools that allow them to rigorously evaluate their designs, taken into account data communication, geographic locations, and high performance computing capacity. This paper presents a technical approach to designing a testbed for embedding real-time monitoring and computation functionalities into the power grid. The approach focuses on integrating the parallel computational models with the data management infrastructure for near-real time state estimation. We study and summarize various forces and requirements that drive the design decisions in the distributed systems architecture. Given the continental scale of the power grid, it is important for the testbed to be extensible and scalable within a complex topology of physical entities, controlled by an overlaid network of power utilities and regulatory balancing authorities. This paper outlines the technical steps, and software toolkits to develop this testbed.
