systems are more and more expected to work in dynamic environment, to deal with fluctuation of their characteristics and to guaranty functional and nonfunctional requirements. systems should also keep compliant with the contracted quality of service. Moreover, when necessary, services and aspects should be added or removed on line. In this paper, we overview major approaches to deploy, reconfigure and adapt applications and underlying software platforms. These changes should be realized according to the evolving context and execution environment so that systems can stay compliant with the specifications and requirements of the application. We end this position paper with a vision on future directions and developments.

General Enterprise Architecting (GEA) is a framework to govern coherence in complex organizations, and is based on both scientific insights and experiences from practice. GEA postulates that coherence of an enterprise relates to its performance. A quantitative expression of enterprise coherence has the opportunity to function as a leading indicator for performance. GEA does measure steering on enterprise coherence, however measurement of enterprise coherence itself is yet lacking. The research offers a setup for design of an information product, that somehow expresses enterprise coherence itself.

This paper describes the design and implementation of an architecture for access-controlled resource discovery. This system achieves this goal by integrating access control with the Intentional Naming System (INS), a resource discovery and service location system. The integration is scalable, efficient, and fits well within a proxy-based security framework designed for dynamic networks. We provide performance experiments that show how our solution outperforms existing schemes. The result is a system that provides secure, Access-controlled resource discovery that can scale to large numbers of resources and users.

Exploiting autonomic adaptation in defending a distributed application is a relatively new research area. We describe how the QuO adaptive middleware was used to implement auto-adaptive defenses ranging from simple rapid-response sensor-actuator tactics to more sophisticated containment and outrun strategies. In addition, we report on two experiments where live red team attacks were used to evaluate our auto-adaptive defense technology.

Communication among multiple peer processes is referred to as group communication. In this paper we discuss a hierarchical group of processes to reduce communication and computation overheads, which is composed of disjointed subgroups. Each subgroup has gateway processes which communicate with other subgroups. Even if messages are causally ordered in a subgroup, the messages may not be causally ordered in another subgroup. We discuss how causality of messages among every pair of processes in a subgroup is related with causalities of the messages in another subgroups. In addition, we present a protocol to causally deliver messages through subgroups hierarchically structured.

This paper identifies that time variance behavior (TVB) exists in today's Web proxy systems where the user request profile varies with time. As future video on demand (VoD) systems will very likely be implemented on the Internet, it is expected that TVB will have a significant impact on the performance of the video caching servers such as CDN. In this paper, a TVB-aware prefetch algorithm is proposed Simulations on a distributed video system show that TVB-aware prefetch algorithm performs much better than conventional prefetch algorithm even when the user request patterns are not fully known.

Current software development, techniques and tools lack the capability to characterize function call chains in multithreaded, and distributed applications built upon component technologies like CORBA, COM and J2EE. The root cause is that causal linkage information necessary to trace end-to-end call chains is private to each vendor's runtime and often unavailable for logging or analysis. We propose and demonstrate a mechanism for maintaining and correlating global causality information of component-based applications, and using this information to expose and characterize function call chains and their associated behaviors in such multithreaded and distributed applications. Our approach relies on a global virtual tunnel facilitated by the instrumented stubs and skeletons. This tunnel maintains and correlates causal information throughout the end-to-end call chains spanning threads, processes and processors. As a result, monitoring data captured locally can be correlated and system-wide propagation of timing latency and CPU utilization becomes perceivable.

distributed hash table (DHT) based overlay networks offer an administration-free and fault-tolerant storage space that maps "keys" to "values". For these systems to function efficiently, their structures mustfit that of the underlying network. Existing techniques for discovering network proximity information, such as landmark clustering and expanding-ring search are either inaccurate or expensive. The lack of global proximity information in overlay construction and maintenance can result in bad proximity approximation or excessive communication. To address these problems, we propose the following: (1) Combining landmark clustering and round-trip time (RTT) measurements to generate proximity information, achieving both efficiency and accuracy. (2) Controlled placement of global proximity information on the system itself as soft-state, such that nodes can independently access relevant information efficiently. (3) Publish/subscribe functionality that allows nodes to subscribe to the relevant soft-state and get notified as the state changes necessitate overlay restructuring.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds to multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE's communication plaform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper.

The OMG Data-Distribution Service (DDS) is an emerging specification for publish-subscribe data-distribution systems. The purpose of the specification is to provide a common application-level interface that clearly defines the data-distribution service. The specification describes the service using UML, thus providing a platform-independent model that can then be mapped into a variety of concrete platforms and programming languages. The OMG DDS attempts to unify the common practice of several existing implementations [2, 5] enumerating and providing formal definitions for the QoS (Quality of Service) settings that can be used to configure the service. This paper introduces the OMG DDS specification, describes the main aspects of the model, QoS settings, and gives examples of the communication scenarios it supports.
