A self-organized approach to manage a distributed proxy system called Adaptive distributed Caching (ADC) has been proposed previously [8]. We model each proxy as an autonomous agent that is equipped to decide how to deal with client requests using local information. Experimental results show that our ADC algorithm is able to compete with typical hashing-based approaches. This paper gives a full description of the self-organizing distributed algorithm, with a performance comparison based on hits and hops rate. Additional evaluation of the parameters caching-, multiple- and single-table size is also presented.

In applications where data needs to be shared among distributed components it is desirable to have overall data consistency at all times. This is crucial for safety-critical systems, where inconsistency can lead to failures. Overall continuous data consistency is, however, rarely possible to achieve. For distributed systems, a relaxed view based on the temporal validity of data can be proven sufficient. If components in a distributed computer-based system have different temporal validity constraints for the same data, then as long as these constraints are satisfied overall system inconsistency is not harmful. We propose the use of a formal analysis technique for guaranteeing temporal validity of shared data. The approach is based on a real-time temporal logic of knowledge suitable for verification through model checking. It allows us to check that the shared data in the system is consistent "enough" and cannot be a source of failure. We illustrate the approach with an open dynamic real-time distributed computer-based system.

Technological advances are leveraging the widespread deployment of mobile ad hoc networks. An interesting characteristic of ad hoc networks is their self-organization and their dependence of the behavior of individual nodes. Until recently, most research on ad hoc networks has assumed that all nodes were cooperative. This assumption is no longer valid in spontaneous networks formed by individuals with diverse goals and interests. In such environment, the presence of selfish nodes may degrade significantly the performance of the ad hoc network. This paper proposes a novel algorithm that aims to discourage selfish behavior in mobile ad hoc networks.

Nowadays, scientific progress in multiple disciplines gave rise to conducting large scale scientific experiments and applications known as High Performance computing (HPC). These HPC applications are commonly structured as workflows of heavy tasks with large data size and intricate dependencies which are typically performed in large-scale distributed systems (LSDS) such as clusters, Grids and recently Cloud infrastructures. In fact, workflow scheduling in distributed systems, especially in Clouds, is proved to be an NP hard problem. Our main target in this paper is to design a workflow scheduling approach based on the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm version 2 (NSGA-II) in hybrid distributed systems by optimizing the Makespan and cost. In this work, we also studied the improvement of the Makespan-Cost trade-off with the scalability concept in the Cloud with our designed approach. For that, we proposed different scenarios dealing with the provisioning strategy of processing nodes alongside an existing resource pool. Conducted experiments show the advantage of Cloud infrastructures against other distributed systems and allow investigating the different factors in correlation with resources provisioning process. In a distributed fault-tolerant server system realized according to the open group model, inconsistency will (temporarily) arise between the dynamic membership of the replicated service and its client-side representation in the event of server failures and recoveries. The paper proposes techniques for maintaining this consistency and discuss their performance implications in failure/recovery scenarios where clients load balance requests on the servers. Comparative performance measurements is carried out for two of the proposed techniques. The results indicate that the performance impact of lacking consistency is easily kept small, and that the cost of the technique is small.

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a VRML97 multi-user layer, which is introduced in the EVE distributed virtual reality platform. Main consideration of our multi-user extension is the ease of transforming single-user virtual worlds to multi-user virtual worlds, as well as the conformity with any standard VRML97 browser. Furthermore, we present the EVE's communication platform, which can be used in order to support Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVEs). Main issues regarding the effective network communication as well as the initialization of the 3D scene are discussed in this paper.

Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is a powerful technique for computer aided prediction of proteins' three-dimensional structure. In this work, employing an all-atom force field we demonstrate the efficiency of the standard PSO algorithm, as implemented in the ArFlock library, for finding the folded state of two proteins of different sizes starting from completely extended conformations. In particular, the predicted structure of the larger protein is in good agreement with the structure from the Protein Data Bank within the experimental resolution. We also show that parallelization of the PSO speeds up the simulation linearly with the number of workers and reduces the time for predictions dramatically without loss of accuracy. © 2011 ACM.

Enterprise applications are transactional, distributed multi-user applications. Their distributed structure can be modeled as a process topology that consists of distributed application processes, datastores, and client/server communication relationships. Many non-functional properties of an enterprise application, such as scalability, response time, and availability are directly influenced by the design of the underlying process topology. It is the thesis of this paper that demanding enterprise applications require custom process topologies to address application-specific requirements. Furthermore, topologies should easy to adapt to changing requirements without having to redesign large parts of the enterprise application. We identify key requirements for enterprise application middleware. Based on the requirements, we present an architecture with explicit support for custom and configurable distributed process topologies. With our architecture, the evolution of the distributed structure of an enterprise application is mainly a matter of reconfiguration.

High Performance computing (HPC) systems now consist of many thousands of individual servers. While relatively scalable and cost effective, these systems suffer from a complexity of scale that will not improve with increasing machine size. It will become increasingly difficult, if not impossible, for HPC systems to maintain node availability long enough for any type of worthwhile scientific calculations to be performed. Existing execution and programming models, which are dependent on guaranteed hardware reliability, are not well suited to future distributed memory parallel systems where hardware reliability cannot be guaranteed. We propose a distributed dataflow execution model which utilizes a distributed dictionary for data memoization, allowing each parallel task to schedule instructions without direct inter-task coordination. We provide a description of the proposed execution model, including program formulation and autonomous dataflow task selection. Experiments performed demonstrate the proposed model's ability to automatically distribute work across tasks, as well as the proposed model's ability to scale in both shared memory and distributed memory. © 2014 IEEE.

This paper introduces SCCB1 cluster system in which SCC PCI boards are implemented. SCCB cluster is built using PCs(32nodes) for processor, and two networks. SCC PCI boards allow to fast barrier synchronization mechanism and *** order to perform fast synchronization, each SCC board is connected by a new type of network, and checks completion of barrier by hardware. PGCCS allows us to measure execution times accurately on the Beowulf clusters. In performance evaluation, SCC board plugged into 32-nodes PC cluster achieves barrier latency of 3.2 μ8. Time difference errors of PGCCS were smaller (1/100) than that of a conventional method using MPLBarrier.
