We present the design of a distributed store that offers various levels of security guarantees while tolerating a limited number of nodes that are compromised by an adversary. The store uses secret sharing schemes to offer security guarantees namely availability, confidentiality and integrity. However a pure secret sharing scheme could suffer from performance problems and high access costs. We integrate secret sharing with replication for better performance and to keep access costs low. The tradeoffs involved between availability and access cost on one hand and confidentiality and integrity on the other are analyzed Our system differs from traditional approaches such as state machine or quorum based replication that have been developed to tolerate Byzantine failures. Unlike such systems, we augment replication with secret sharing and demonstrate that such a hybrid scheme offers additional flexibility that is not possible with replication alone.

In this paper, we introduce the information logistics concept and demonstrate its relevance for the field of wearable computing. Information logistics is an innovative technology based on the idea that the right information gets to the recipient, e.g. journalist at the right time. The objective is a need- and user-oriented information supply according to just-in-time principles. The Smart-Wear project is a first step towards a personalized, wearable information broker based on the information logistics concept. In this paper, we want to illustrate the complexity of such a project aiming to deliver "information skin-deep". We therefore present the underlying idea as well as the system architecture. We furthermore summarize the experiences and results of the customer study as user acceptance proves to be one of the major tasks of wearable computing due the impact such technologies have on the users.

The migration problem (MP) of mobile agents is an important, NP-hard problem in distributed information retrieval systems built upon mobile agent technology. MP aims at optimizing the migration paths of agents for minimizing total communication cost within a user-specified limit of task completion time. In this paper we first show MP is equivalent to searching for an optimal migration tree. We then employ genetic algorithms to address MP proposing a new encoding scheme to represent the migration trees, which is composed of two parts: one is the pre-ordered traversal sequence of tree vertices, the other the children number sequence of corresponding tree vertices. Our encoding scheme has the advantages of simplicity for encoding and decoding, ease for GA operations, and better equilibrium between exploration and exploitation. This encoding scheme, with few restrictions on the length of code, can be freely lengthened or shortened according to the characteristics of problem space. We can benefit much from such an adaptive property. The simulation results reveal the efficiency and higher performance of our algorithm, and fast convergence to the optima or sub-optima on various problem sizes. Our algorithm runs nearly 4 times faster than the binary string encoding of vertices when the problem size becomes large and the search capability is comparative or slightly better of our algorithm than the benchmark.

Real-time distributed collaboration applications are characterized by close co-operation among processes. Concurrency control and timeliness of the response are essential requirements for such applications. As mobile systems are characterized by frequent disconnections and physical mobility from one cell to another, providing real-time distributed collaboration for mobile systems is a real challenge. In this paper, we propose a framework for concurrency control in real-time distributed collaboration applications for mobile systems. We view mobile systems as a three-tier architecture and propose a data-centric framework for optimistic concurrency control. The framework is built on top of a totally ordered exactly-once multicast protocol. Our model ensures that number of messages on the wired network is independent of the number of mobile hosts in the system. We have implemented and tested our framework by developing a collaborative text editor application over exactly-once multicast protocol.

Middleware components are becoming increasingly important as applications share computational resources in distributed environments. One of the main challenges in such environments is to achieve scalability of concurrency control. Existing concurrency protocols lack scalability. Scalability enables resource sharing and computing with distributed objects in systems with a large number of nodes. We have designed and implemented a novel, scalable and fully decentralized middleware concurrency control protocol. Our experiments on a Linux cluster indicate that an average number of three messages is required per lock request on a system with as many, as 120, which is a logarithmic asymptote. At the same time, the response time for the requests scales linearly with the increase in concurrency level. A comparison to another scalable concurrency protocol shows that our protocol results in significantly, superior asymptotic savings in message overhead and response time for large number of nodes. While our approach follows the specification of general CORBA concurrency services for large-scale data and object repositories, the principles are applicable to any distributed concurrency services and transaction models. The results of this work impact scalability for distributed computing facilities ranging from embedded computing with distributed objects over peer-to-peer computing environments to arbitrating accesses in very large database environments.

The business process modeling has become a mature subject in the research of information systems domain. Although, the business process models remain in consistent evolution to be available for the enterprises to better respond to the market needs and to inflect the needs of different stakeholders, in consequence to construct and preserve their competitive advantages. In this regard, we propose a declarative (rule-based) approach which exploit the relationships among the artifacts (e.g. activities, data, and roles) of a business process model. It may also consider the context of the change and the history of dependencies among different elements of the process. We may then experiment the change impact prediction using inference made by either the probabilities, knowledge-base, or evolutionary algorithms. It may help to better assess the volume of impact, as a result of the planned change.

The mobile computing domain presents major new challenges for middleware to overcome. In particular the mobile environment is characterised by frequent changes and often poor network QoS. Therefore, a number of middleware platforms and paradigms have been Put forward to solve these issues. This in turn though has generated a problem i.e. middleware heterogeneity exists within this domain. As a consequence, mobile client applications developed upon one type of middleware are unable to interoperate and utilise services implemented on an alternative. In this paper, we examine the issue of middleware heterogeneity and propose a configurable and dynamically reconfigurable middleware platform, named ReMMoC (Reflective Middleware for Mobile computing), which allows mobile client applications to be developed independently of the underlying middleware technology.

We developed Smart Furniture, which extemporaneously converts the legacy non-smart space into a Smart Hot-spot which consists of computational services. Since the Smart Furniture is equipped with networked computers, sensors and various I/O devices, it can provide various services by alone or by coordinating with other devices. In this paper, the physical structure and middlewares for the Smart Furniture are described. The prototype systems to realize Smart Hot-spot such as a Crossing Window System, an Active Authentication System for Library, a Mobile TV-phone System, and an Environmental Information Monitor System are also introduced.

distributed deployment of network applications in wide-area environments has proven effective for improving end-user experience. Another trend is the use of component,frameworks for building network services. Their *** nature makes, such applications natural candidates for distributed deployment, but it is unclear if the design patterns underlying component frameworks also enable efficient service distribution. In this paper, we investigate the application design rules and accompanying system-level support essential to a beneficial and efficient service distribution process. Our study targets the widely used Java 2 Enterprise Edition J2EE) component platform and Java Pet Store, a sample component-based e-commerce application. Our results present strong experimental evidence that component-based applications can be efficiently distributed in wide-area environments using a small set of generally applicable design rules for orchestrating interactions and managing component state. We additionally discuss enforcement of these rules, and their automated implementation by container frameworks.

In order to utilize the real world via computers by means of camera images in augmented reality systems, the concise coordinate information of the systems must be identified Image-based approaches are promising for this purpose since they provide direct mapping from the camera images to the coordinate system for virtual objects, and, therefore, no camera calibration is necessary. However, the conventional image-based markers are typically stickers, and the information they deliver is limited and susceptible to change dynamically. In this paper, we propose a location marking method, called VCC (visual computer communication), which uses more intelligent markers. In our method, a marker, consisting of 16 LEDs (light-emitting diodes), keeps blinking to provide both coordinate information and attached information such as an address or a URL.
