Current technologies for distributed application development, while being well-adapted for the client-server model, do not adequately address emerging application domains, such as multimedia, embedded or mobile applications. The black box approach, used to achieve distribution and OS transparency, prevents application developers from adapting execution environments to the semantics and constraints of their application domain, thus leading to a growing number of ad-hoc solutions which are closed, static and poorly interoperable. As a solution, we present a reflexive and dynamically adaptable execution environment,(1) based on reification of hardware resources and a standalone dynamic code generator. This architecture allows dynamic construction of specialized OS or middleware components.

Ubiquitous computing holds the promise of a more connected, more convenient, and more information rich world. However, the limited number of pervasive devices actually available greatly restricts the range of functionality currently available to ubiquitous computing applications. We present an approach whereby legacy devices are revitalized as new, pervasive artifacts through augmentation by inexpensive sensors and actuators. While such augmentation is commonplace in prototyping, we argue the technique has practical utility, especially with respect to larger, complex devices. For these devices, often a substantial investment has already been made and invasive retrofitting or replacement would be prohibitively expensive. To ground our approach, we have been investigating the use of this technique to modernize a legacy elevator system at our university. In this paper, we describe technical challenges we have encountered and report on our experience in addressing these challenges.

The ongoing challenge of supporting high performance communications, real-time critical and secure applications leads to a shift from traditional IP networks towards a more intelligent, end-to-end, service-aware network paradigm. Future networks have to i) be more content or application-aware;ii) provide dynamic features for service creation;iii) observe and enforce network-wide policies;and finally, iv) enable control from the network provider to the end-user. This paper presents the technical aspects of a policy based auditing system for a QoS-enabled network. The goal is to define the architecture of policy-based network QoS control and to develop and implement a prototype to evaluate this architecture.

Consensus is a fundamental distributed agreement problem that has to be solved when one has to design or implement reliable applications. As consensus cannot be solved in pure asynchronous distributed systems, those systems have to be equipped with appropriate oracles to circumvent the impossibility. Several oracles (unreliable failure detector leader capability, random number generator) have been proposed, and consensus protocols based on such ad hoc oracles have been designed. This paper presents a generic consensus framework that can be instantiated with any oracle, or combination of oracles, that satisfies a set of properties. This generic framework provides indulgent consensus protocols that are particularly simple and efficient both in well-behaved runs (i.e., when there are no failures), and in stable runs (i.e., when there is no failure during the execution although some processes can be initially crashed). In those runs, the protocols terminate in two communication steps (which is optimal). Indulgence means that the resulting protocol never violates its safety property even when the underlying oracle behaves arbitrarily. Interestingly, the protocol can also allow processes to decide in one communication step in some specific configurations.

In applications where data needs to be shared among distributed components it is desirable to have overall data consistency at all times. This is crucial for safety-critical systems, where inconsistency can lead to failures. Overall continuous data consistency is, however, rarely possible to achieve. For distributed systems, a relaxed view based on the temporal validity of data can be proven sufficient. If components in a distributed computer-based system have different temporal validity constraints for the same data, then as long as these constraints are satisfied overall system inconsistency is not harmful. We propose the use of a formal analysis technique for guaranteeing temporal validity of shared data. The approach is based on a real-time temporal logic of knowledge suitable for verification through model checking. It allows us to check that the shared data in the system is consistent "enough" and cannot be a source of failure. We illustrate the approach with an open dynamic real-time distributed computer-based system.

We are investigating how handheld devices like Palm PDAs and PocketPCs can be used as assistive technologies for computer access by people with motor impairments such as Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy. As part of this research, we are developing new input techniques for handheld text entry. People with motor impairments suffer from symptoms that affect their ability to use conventional text entry methods. One symptom is a lack of stability in stylus movements caused by tremor or spasm. In an effort to create a more stable means of text entry, we are researching how to leverage elevated physical edges in our development of new text entry techniques. We present three edge-based techniques: Edge Keyboards, CornerSlide, and EdgeWrite.

An important component of the vision of ubiquitous computing is universal appliance-interaction-the ability to use mobile and wearable computers such as cell phones and palmtops to interact with arbitrary devices and appliances distributed over a network. This raises the user interface (UI) deployment issue, which involves implementing middleware for deploying compatible UIs of arbitrary appliances on different kinds of mobile computers. In this paper, we provide a preliminary evaluation of different approaches to implementing such middleware consisting of experimental results and a qualitative analysis. In this evaluation, we compare (a) generating vs. installing predefined UIs, (b) installing local vs. remote predefined UIs, (c) deployment of speech vs. graphical UIs, (d) deployment of UIs of simple vs. complex appliances, (e) deployment over a wireless and wired network, and 69 deployment on laptop and palmtop computers. We consider storage costs, deployment times, and operation invocation times in our experiments.

Being able to adapt themselves to changing environments represents an important requirement for the modem software systems. distributed systems face a changing, evolving communication environment due to mobility, large scale deployment, new and unpredictable user behaviours. As the programming of such systems becomes more complex, new programming models have been used for creating applications. Communication between different system components is based on two main communication models: communication by messages and communication by remote method invocations. The choice of synchronous communication via remote method invocations or of message-based asynchronous communication still remains an early decision made at the time of the application design. In this article we propose an adaptive mechanism for dynamic and transparent switching of the communication model used between the components of a distributed system. This mechanism, aimed especially at large scale applications and mobile systems, offers the possibility to adapt the communication model to the execution context of an application and the changes in its communication environment.

In this paper we propose an integrated bandwidth management and call admission control scheme applicable in wireless networks that support multiple services with different QoS requirements. The proposed scheme is achieved via i) the integration of a position-assisted and mobility-based predictive advanced bandwidth reservation mechanism that facilitates the seamless operation of the handoffprocess and ii) a bandwidth reconfiguration based call admission control strategy that supports flexible QoS management. The comparison of the achievable performance of our proposed scheme with the corresponding results of conventional systems demonstrate that our integrated strategy can alleviate the problem of over-reservation, support seamless operation throughout the wireless network and increase significantly the system resource utilization.

We propose a generic framework for distributed broadcasting in ad hoc wireless networks. The approach is based on selecting a small subset of hosts (also called nodes) to form a forward node set to carry out a broadcast process. The status of each node, forwarding or non-forwarding, is determined either by itself (self-pruning) or by other nodes (neighbor-designating). Node status can be determined at different snapshots of network state along time (called views) without causing problems in broadcast coverage. A sufficient condition, called coverage condition, is given for a node to take the non-forward status. Such a condition can be easily checked locally around the node. Several existing broadcast algorithms can be viewed as special cases of the generic framework with kappa-hop neighborhood information. A comprehensive comparison among existing algorithms is conducted. Simulation results show that new algorithms, which are more efficient than existing ones, can be derived from the generic framework. This work is an extension to an early work in which only self-pruning methods are discussed [16].
