We study the performance of TFRC-based traffic running across a 3G network. The goal is to evaluate the impact of three different queue management schemes on the end-to-end performance provided by TFRC. We show that drop-on-full queuing is absolutely inappropriate for TFRC traffic running over 3G links since it leads to burst packet drops and oscillatory behaviour in TFRC. Although, this is mostly avoided with RED (Random Early Discard) queuing, we find large initial probing phases of TFRC when using RED. With a simpler active queue management scheme we propose, PDPC, this probing phase is significantly reduced.

Real-time distributed collaboration applications are characterized by close co-operation among processes. Concurrency control and timeliness of the response are essential requirements for such applications. As mobile systems are characterized by frequent disconnections and physical mobility from one cell to another, providing real-time distributed collaboration for mobile systems is a real challenge. In this paper, we propose a framework for concurrency control in real-time distributed collaboration applications for mobile systems. We view mobile systems as a three-tier architecture and propose a data-centric framework for optimistic concurrency control. The framework is built on top of a totally ordered exactly-once multicast protocol. Our model ensures that number of messages on the wired network is independent of the number of mobile hosts in the system. We have implemented and tested our framework by developing a collaborative text editor application over exactly-once multicast protocol.

The mobile computing domain presents major new challenges for middleware to overcome. In particular the mobile environment is characterised by frequent changes and often poor network QoS. Therefore, a number of middleware platforms and paradigms have been Put forward to solve these issues. This in turn though has generated a problem i.e. middleware heterogeneity exists within this domain. As a consequence, mobile client applications developed upon one type of middleware are unable to interoperate and utilise services implemented on an alternative. In this paper, we examine the issue of middleware heterogeneity and propose a configurable and dynamically reconfigurable middleware platform, named ReMMoC (Reflective Middleware for Mobile computing), which allows mobile client applications to be developed independently of the underlying middleware technology.

Some of the basic innovative trends of the industrial environment, today, are the shift from centralized control architectures to distributed systems, as well as the increasing degree of heterogeneity. These features impose the need for special software tools that support the design of control applications in a homogeneous and interoperable way, as well as their distribution to the interconnected participating industrial devices. The utilisation of the internet and the provision of e-services to the industry will also lead to the distribution of management functionalities in addition to control code distribution. Such an evolution requires both a new model for industrial devices as well as a design and deployment tool that will make possible the distribution of functionalities to industrial devices. This paper presents the state-of-the-art considering distributed industrial system design and concludes with a specification of distributed systems, enabling the incorporation of novel advanced functionalities.

Enterprise applications are transactional, distributed multi-user applications. Their distributed structure can be modeled as a process topology that consists of distributed application processes, datastores, and client/server communication relationships. Many non-functional properties of an enterprise application, such as scalability, response time, and availability are directly influenced by the design of the underlying process topology. It is the thesis of this paper that demanding enterprise applications require custom process topologies to address application-specific requirements. Furthermore, topologies should easy to adapt to changing requirements without having to redesign large parts of the enterprise application. We identify key requirements for enterprise application middle-ware. Based on the requirements, we present an architecture with explicit support for custom and configurable distributed process topologies. With our architecture, the evolution of the distributed structure of an enterprise application is mainly a matter of reconfiguration.

This paper deals with enabling technologies of a user centric future wireless world. The concept of user centric peer-to-peer service environment is provided and demonstrated in a residential home environment. The construction is based on the application of session initiation protocol and open service gateway platform to establish a peer-to-peer service environment for a single user. User centricity of the provided concept comes from easy management and control of surrounding networked appliances. A video based remote controlling of a toy car and controlling of X. 10 devices is used as a case study for validation of the concept. Finally, experiences based on the constructed prototype are provided.

Publish/subscribe (pub/sub) proliferates loose coupling and is touted to facilitate mobility. The inherent loose coupling even allows existing applications to be transferred to mobile environments, if an appropriate infrastructure support is available. However, existing pub/sub middleware are mostly optimizedfor static systems where users as well as the underlying system structure is rather fixed In this paper we analyze the necessary steps to support mobile clients with publish/subscribe middleware. The REBECA content-based pub/sub service is extended to accommodate to physically mobile clients, offering a location transparent access to the middleware without degrading the previously guaranteed quality of service. The transparent access allows existing applications to be seamlessly transferred from a static to a mobile scenario without having to adapt client applications.

In order to utilize the real world via computers by means of camera images in augmented reality systems, the concise coordinate information of the systems must be identified Image-based approaches are promising for this purpose since they provide direct mapping from the camera images to the coordinate system for virtual objects, and, therefore, no camera calibration is necessary. However, the conventional image-based markers are typically stickers, and the information they deliver is limited and susceptible to change dynamically. In this paper, we propose a location marking method, called VCC (visual computer communication), which uses more intelligent markers. In our method, a marker, consisting of 16 LEDs (light-emitting diodes), keeps blinking to provide both coordinate information and attached information such as an address or a URL.

We are investigating how handheld devices like Palm PDAs and PocketPCs can be used as assistive technologies for computer access by people with motor impairments such as Muscular Dystrophy and Cerebral Palsy. As part of this research, we are developing new input techniques for handheld text entry. People with motor impairments suffer from symptoms that affect their ability to use conventional text entry methods. One symptom is a lack of stability in stylus movements caused by tremor or spasm. In an effort to create a more stable means of text entry, we are researching how to leverage elevated physical edges in our development of new text entry techniques. We present three edge-based techniques: Edge Keyboards, CornerSlide, and EdgeWrite.

Current technologies for distributed application development, while being well-adapted for the client-server model, do not adequately address emerging application domains, such as multimedia, embedded or mobile applications. The black box approach, used to achieve distribution and OS transparency, prevents application developers from adapting execution environments to the semantics and constraints of their application domain, thus leading to a growing number of ad-hoc solutions which are closed, static and poorly interoperable. As a solution, we present a reflexive and dynamically adaptable execution environment,(1) based on reification of hardware resources and a standalone dynamic code generator. This architecture allows dynamic construction of specialized OS or middleware components.
