In applications where data needs to be shared among distributed components it is desirable to have overall data consistency at all times. This is crucial for safety-critical systems, where inconsistency can lead to failures. Overall continuous data consistency is, however, rarely possible to achieve. For distributed systems, a relaxed view based on the temporal validity of data can be proven sufficient. If components in a distributed computer-based system have different temporal validity constraints for the same data, then as long as these constraints are satisfied overall system inconsistency is not harmful. We propose the use of a formal analysis technique for guaranteeing temporal validity of shared data. The approach is based on a real-time temporal logic of knowledge suitable for verification through model checking. It allows us to check that the shared data in the system is consistent "enough" and cannot be a source of failure. We illustrate the approach with an open dynamic real-time distributed computer-based system.

Technological advances are leveraging the widespread deployment of mobile ad hoc networks. An interesting characteristic of ad hoc networks is their self-organization and their dependence of the behavior of individual nodes. Until recently, most research on ad hoc networks has assumed that all nodes were cooperative. This assumption is no longer valid in spontaneous networks formed by individuals with diverse goals and interests. In such environment, the presence of selfish nodes may degrade significantly the performance of the ad hoc network. This paper proposes a novel algorithm that aims to discourage selfish behavior in mobile ad hoc networks.

Broadcasting provides an efficient means for disseminating information in both wired and wireless setting. In this paper we study different client side cache organizations for various types of multiversion data broadcast, i.e., data broadcast in which more than one value is broadcast per data item. Besides increasing the concurrency of client transactions, multiversion broadcast provides clients with the possibility of accessing multiple server states. For example, such a functionality is essential to support applications that require access to data sequences and have limited local memory to store the previous versions, such as in the case of sensor networks.

Smart Messages (SMs) are migratory execution units used to describe distributed computations over mobile ad hoc networks of embedded systems. The main benefits provided by SMs are flexibility, scalability, and the ability to perform distributed computations over networks composed of heterogeneous, resource constrained, unattended embedded systems. A key challenge that confronts SMs, however, is how to define a security architecture that protects both the SMs and the hosts, while preserving the SM benefits. In this paper we present a basic SM security architecture which sets up a framework for the security related issues of SMs and provides solutions for authentication, authorization, and secure SM migration. Since this paper is the first attempt to investigate the unique security challenges posed by a system based on mobile code executed over mobile ad hoc networks, we also discuss the main issues that remain to be solved for a more comprehensive SM security architecture.

In this paper we propose an integrated bandwidth management and call admission control scheme applicable in wireless networks that support multiple services with different QoS requirements. The proposed scheme is achieved via i) the integration of a position-assisted and mobility-based predictive advanced bandwidth reservation mechanism that facilitates the seamless operation of the handoffprocess and ii) a bandwidth reconfiguration based call admission control strategy that supports flexible QoS management. The comparison of the achievable performance of our proposed scheme with the corresponding results of conventional systems demonstrate that our integrated strategy can alleviate the problem of over-reservation, support seamless operation throughout the wireless network and increase significantly the system resource utilization.

The migration problem (MP) of mobile agents is an important, NP-hard problem in distributed information retrieval systems built upon mobile agent technology. MP aims at optimizing the migration paths of agents for minimizing total communication cost within a user-specified limit of task completion time. In this paper we first show MP is equivalent to searching for an optimal migration tree. We then employ genetic algorithms to address MP proposing a new encoding scheme to represent the migration trees, which is composed of two parts: one is the pre-ordered traversal sequence of tree vertices, the other the children number sequence of corresponding tree vertices. Our encoding scheme has the advantages of simplicity for encoding and decoding, ease for GA operations, and better equilibrium between exploration and exploitation. This encoding scheme, with few restrictions on the length of code, can be freely lengthened or shortened according to the characteristics of problem space. We can benefit much from such an adaptive property. The simulation results reveal the efficiency and higher performance of our algorithm, and fast convergence to the optima or sub-optima on various problem sizes. Our algorithm runs nearly 4 times faster than the binary string encoding of vertices when the problem size becomes large and the search capability is comparative or slightly better of our algorithm than the benchmark.

The ongoing challenge of supporting high performance communications, real-time critical and secure applications leads to a shift from traditional IP networks towards a more intelligent, end-to-end, service-aware network paradigm. Future networks have to i) be more content or application-aware;ii) provide dynamic features for service creation;iii) observe and enforce network-wide policies;and finally, iv) enable control from the network provider to the end-user. This paper presents the technical aspects of a policy based auditing system for a QoS-enabled network. The goal is to define the architecture of policy-based network QoS control and to develop and implement a prototype to evaluate this architecture.

Data distribution in embedded real-time sensor networks requires new protocols and programming environments that achieve time-sensitive message delivery and provide useful abstractions to the application programmer Attainment of these goals requires changes to multiple layers of the communication protocol stack. In this paper we review a protocol suite developed by the authors for data communication in embedded sensor networks. It takes into account time constraints and exports attribute-based connections that are tightly integrated with properties of the monitored environment. A programming language is described that allows external physical objects to be represented as first class abstractions in the computing system. The language facilitates writing monitoring applications. The system was implemented on a prototypical sensor network based on MICA motes.

In this paper, we propose a novel cache consistency maintenance scheme, called Scalable Asynchronous Cache Consistency Scheme (SACCS), for mobile environments. It relies on the following three key features: (1) Use of flag bits at server and MU's cache to maintain cache consistency;(2) Use of an identifier (ID) for each entry in MU's cache after its invalidation in order to maximize the broadcast bandwidth efficiency;(3) Rendering all valid entries of MU's cache to uncertain state when it wakes up. These three features make the SACCS a highly scalable algorithm with minimum database management overhead. Comprehensive simulation results show that the performance of SACCS is superior to those of existing algorithms.

The maturing domain of ad hoc networking still holds some major challenges on its way to commercial exploitation. The dynamic and decentralized nature of ad hoc networks calls for new paradigms in the design of distributed applications. Most notably, there is a need for self-organization mechanisms in the middleware layer to enable medium-scale and large-scale distributed applications. In this paper we present MESHMd1, a middleware platform for ad hoc networks that is built on mobile agents and tuple space technology. MESHMd1 provides basic building blocks for the implementation of self-organizing distributed applications for ad hoc networks. Unlike other middleware platforms, MESHMd1 puts a high emphasis on mobility awareness, decoupling and bio-inspired coordination primitives. We discuss the aspects of ad hoc networking and self-organization and derive the basic architecture of MESHMd1 before we present our prototype implementation.
