Server replication is a common approach to improving. the scalability of a service on the Internet. For this approach, the task of finding an appropriate server from a set of replicas is a critical issue. We. have proposed in a previous work an architecture where a broker is used to provide server selection on a per session basis. When the-number of servers and/or the number of clients becomes large, a single broker may not have sufficient capacity to handle the load. An extended architecture based on the replication of brokers is therefore considered. We first discuss alternative organizations that support access to multiple brokers and the needed cooperation between brokers in order to achieve server selection effectively. We then propose a server selection policy for our multiple broker architecture and evaluate its performance by simulation.

In this paper we suggest a new angle to look on proxy location problems. We view the proxy as a service and generalize the problem of optimally placing proxies to optimally placing any service in the network. We differentiate between two cases: transparent services, such as transparent caches (TERCs), and non-transparent services where the end stations, such as hosts using a cache, need to be configured with respect to the service locations. This formulation enables us to study in a unified framework the location problems related to active networks, overlay peer-to-peer networks, as well as, CDNs and caching. For both cases we formalize the problem of optimally placing network servers and introduce approximation algorithms. We present simulation results of approximations and heuristics. We also present an optimal solution for the location problem for a special topology. We show, through a series of examples, that our approach can be applied to a variety of different services.

In this paper an efficient hybrid MAC-layer protocol for dependable multi-channel networking structures is presented and evaluated. This new protocol handles C sub-channels totally, that is c physically or frequency divided sub-channels for the information or data packets and one (1) request sub-channel, where the request packets are transmitted and (C=c+1). The proposed mechanism for the accessing of the request sub-channel slots is a TDMA-like scheme. An effective reservation mechanism based on the transmitted requests is used for the deterministic accessing of the slots of the information sub-channels, mainly at high loads. Additionally, the random access ALOHA-like protocol is selected for the dynamic accessing of the Free Information Slots (FISs) for low traffic conditions, when the stations transmit no requests. This combination offers bounded packet delay and high throughput - mean delay performance under mixed (asynchronous/synchronous) traffic. On the other hand, the proposed multi-channel networking structure offers high operational reliability due to the existed channel redundancy.

To obtain good performance in messaging over mobile networks, we have developed a Gateway. Gateway is a message hub that transmits information using store-and-forward messaging and provides powerful optimization and data transformation. The SmartCaching component provides generic caching in an N-tier architecture, an essential function of Gateway. Gateway can be integrated into Pronto, a middleware system for mobile applications with messaging as a basis [15]. Pronto then offers: 1) a lightweight client of Message Oriented Middleware (MOM) based on Java Message Service(JMS), 2) Gateway for reliable and efficient transmission between mobile devices and a server and 3) Serverless JMS based on IP multicast. Integration of Gateway within Pronto provides a solution for mobile application-specific problems such as resource constraints, network characteristics, and data optimization.

This paper addresses the design and implementation of thin coordination veneers for use in the development of applications over ad hoc wireless networks. A coordination veneer is defined as an adaptation layer that customizes a general-purpose coordination middleware to a particular domain with minimal development effort. This technique allows developers to build highly-tailored coordination models while leveraging established models and middleware. We present three such veneers, the coordination models they embody, and the manner in which they were implemented. The LIME middleware, which supplies tuple space based coordination in the ad hoc environment, serves as the implementation base for our veneers. These veneers cover diverse areas in ad hoc mobility: service discovery and provision, event registration and distribution, and secure tuple space access.

In a distributed Database System (DDBS), transactions on objects can be read requests or write requests in a random manner The replication algorithm of objects critically affects the system performance. In this paper we design and evaluate a practically realizable object allocation and replication algorithm, referred to as Adaptive distributed Request Window (ADRW) algorithm, that adapts to the changing patterns of on-line requests. Our objective is to dynamically adjust the allocation schemes of objects so as to minimize the total servicing cost of all the requests that arrive at a DDBS. Finally, we use competitive analysis to quantify the performance of our ADRW algorithm. © 2002 IEEE.

Most existing consensus protocols for synchronous distributed systems are designed to tolerate crash failures of processes. It has been proved that there is no n-process stopping consensus protocol for synchronous distributed systems that tolerates up to t crash failures, in which all non-faulty processes always decide by the end of round t, where t < n-1 and n is the total number of processes, t is the maximum number of failures that can occur. Furthermore, the well-known lower bound, min (t + 1, f + 2), has been proved for early stopping synchronous consensus protocols, where f less than or equal to t, and f is the number of failures that actually occur in the system. In this paper, we propose a consensus protocol for synchronous distributed systems with orderly crash failures [4], which is both time and message efficient than those existing protocols applied in this failure model. The proposed protocol achieves uniform consensus and tolerates up to t failures, in which all non-faulty processes always make decision and stop immediately by the end of f + 1 rounds, where t < n, f less than or equal to t. When there is no failure, the protocol can achieve uniform consensus and stop within one round. We prove that the lower bounds of early stopping protocols for both consensus and uniform consensus in orderly crash failure model are f + 1 rounds, which ensure our proposed protocol is optimal.

Rapid changes in service, network and user demand have made conventional distributed information systems mostly unprepared in continuously and timely satisfying the users requests. A high-assurance information system architecture sustained by Push/Pull mobile agents, called Faded Information Field (FIF), has been proposed to achieve adaptability and real-time properly under continuously changing conditions of the system. When the service offer changes, the information environment is restructured in order to match the current user demand in terms of volume and trend. However, once the structure is set, it is still required to permit to the user's Pull mobile agents to autonomously adapt to the rapidly changing demand conditions. The goal of autonomous navigation of the pull mobile agents is in that regard to assure adaptive migration and distribution of the pull-MAs' process to avoid the congestion of certain regions of the FIF when the user demand for information is changing. In this paper, the concept and realization of autonomous Process or Go Navigation technology is proposed under the goal to preserve the timeliness of the system under local congestion conditions in the FIF Effectiveness in fairly reducing the average users' response time under changing demand conditions has been confirmed by simulation.

In high-speed network, the principle adopted for a time-sensitive flow control mechanism should be autonomous decentralized control. In this mechanism, each node in a network handles its local traffic flow only on the basis of the information it is aware of, although it is desirable that the decision-making at each node leads to high performance of the network as a whole. To implement this mechanism, we need first to investigate the relationship between the flow control mechanism of each node and network performance. In particular, the stability of the network performance is important. Our previous studies have proposed a simple mechanism for autonomous decentralized flow control and have shown that it has desirable stability. However, since we used a simple, symmetric, and homogeneous network model having a single bottleneck in the evaluation, the results cannot be generalized In this paper, by using more complex network configurations in evaluations, we show that the principle of autonomous decentralized flow control can be applied to high-speed network with asymmetric configurations.

Many dynamic location update schemes, such as the time-based, movement-based, and distance-based schemes, have been studied in the location management for Personal Communication Service networks, whereas the movement-based scheme is the most practical approach. In this paper, we propose a novel fractional movement-based location update scheme, in which the movement threshold is a real number with a fraction instead of an integer. We prove analytically that there is a unique optimal fractional movement threshold that minimizes the total cost of location updates and paging per call arrival. Our study shows that the fractional movement-based scheme outperforms the pure movement-based scheme. Furthermore;, we propose a hybrid location management scheme, in which when the call-to-mobility ratio is larger than another threshold, the optimal fractional movement-based scheme is adopted. Otherwise, the static location update scheme is adopted. The Newton approximation method is adopted to find the 2(nd) threshold.
