System of Mobile Devices (SyD) is a middleware we developed that can he used for implementing collaborative, mobile, and distributed applications over heterogeneous devices, data stores, and computing environments. Current prototype implementation of SyD consists of five modules. These modules provide ease of programming in the areas of distributed communication, remote method invocation, service publication and discovery, directory services, distributed service invocation and aggregation, event handling, collaborative link creation and enforcement. A central module is SyDLink which allows SyD-based applications to create "coordination" links. Coordination links represent dependencies among heterogeneous devices and application components. Based on the underlying event-and-trigger mechanism, they allow automatic updates as well as real-lime enforcement of global constraints and interdependencies. SyDLink objects provide the underlying mechanism in SyD to enforce atomic execution of distributed transactions. We explain and demonstrate the use of SyDLink objects via a running example, a collaborative SyD calendar application, throughout the paper. © 2002 IEEE.

The university campus is an interesting application environment for the ubiquitous computing paradigm: a large number of users share a substantial amount of their information needs and much of this information is directly related to physical objects, places, and people that are situated in the campus environment. We motivate the need for material entry points into a virtual campus that increase its accessibility and visibility from within the physical campus environment. We focus on the aspect of linking virtual and physical elements in such a setting and present the ETHOC system, which enables users to attach virtual counterparts to printed material. The system performs the creation, administration, and intermediation of online resources related to paper documents. To information providers, it offers a Web-based author portal for generating unique IDs that can be printed as barcodes and for associating online content and actions to printed material. To users it offers simple means to interact with virtual counterparts of printed documents using a variety of devices, such as WAP-enabled mobile phones or PDAs, and it stores a personal access history for each user. The ETHOC system allows us to put ubiquitous computing concepts into practical use and to gain new insights into the design of virtual counterparts of real-world objects. © 2002 IEEE.

The advancement of wireless communication and mobile telecommunication has made mobile commerce possible. In the retail business under the evolving market, the users would like to utilize the appropriate services based on their preference and situation continuously. The service providers need to grasp the current requirements of the majority of the users in the local service area in order to provide the effective service for the current local majority of the service area. However these local but familiar services cannot be realized through global information services on the Internet. The Service Oriented Community is proposed in order to satisfy both users' and service providers' requirements. In the Community, the members cooperate with each other in order to get mutual benefits like social community. The users provide their requirements to service providers while utilizing the services, and service providers utilize the users marketing information to provide appropriate services. This marketing information should be collected in the flexible area based on services in real time. Hence flexibility, real-time property, and fault tolerance are required. Here, Time Distance Oriented Information Service System has been proposed to achieve flexibility in collecting the users' marketing information in the area based on services. In the community system, the key idea is autonomous cooperation among nodes to satisfy the requirements. Here, Autonomous Synchronization Technique and Autonomous Cooperation Technique are proposed to satisfy real time property and fault tolerance respectively. The effectiveness of these technologies is shown at the end.

Mobile IP route optimization and Mobile IP local registration are two approaches to solve performance problems associated with the base Mobile IP protocol proposed by IETF. The route optimization scheme solves the triangular routing problem by introducing the binding cache concept. The local registration scheme reduces the large overhead for location management by processing the mobile host's registration request only at a local foreign agent. In this paper, we present a mailbox-based approach to take advantages of both approaches. Each mobile host migrated to a foreign network is associated with a mailbox, which can be decoupled with the owner host, and packets destined to the receiver will be delivered to the mailbox whose address is cached in the sender. Separating mailbox from its owner host allows us to achieve adaptive location management, while at the same time buffering incoming packets in the mailbox located somewhere in the network closer to the receiver reduces the retransmission cost. The dynamic migration of mailbox also eliminates the need of pre-structuring mobility agents into hierarchy which is a necessary in the local registration scheme. © 2002 IEEE.

Rapid prototyping is an automated manufacturing process that quickly builds physical models from CAD files of three-dimensional prototypes. It dramatically speeds up design and manufacturing processes and substantially reduces the production cost. With the advanced Web technologies, rapid prototyping manufacturing systems can be further integrated and more effectively utilized. We have designed a distributed web platform where users can design prototypes, simulate manufacturing, and issue ordering requests for real manufacturing through browser interfaces. However, an improper scheduling approach may degrade system utilization and throughput significantly. To solve this problem, we propose a real-time scheduling approach to maximize system utilization and minimize the average response time with the best effort. Using this approach, new requests can be accepted dynamically and all accepted requests can be finished before deadlines. We show that the scheduling overhead can be neglected and the average response time is very close to the optimal solution. With the proposed scheduling approach, the Web rapid prototyping platform is able to fully utilize Web resources for rapid prototyping manufacturing and the quality of service is significantly improved. © 2002 IEEE.

In recent distributed multimedia applications such as multi-site teleconferencing, different video streams from different locations are distributed to a number of receivers via multicasting on the Internet, and each receiver simultaneously plays back these videos on his/her terminals. These multicast streams may often be delivered on the same bottleneck link, therefore they are likely to cause competition with each other for the limited bandwidth. In general, layered multicast is considered efficient for avoiding congestion by letting only the affected receivers degrade their receiving rates. However in case of bandwidth competition by multiple layered multicast streams (inter-stream bandwidth competition), these receivers may choose different streams to be degraded, which may result in slow convergence and low utility of bandwidth. In this paper we propose a protocol to coordinate those receivers in a distributed manner for the fast convergence to an optimal layer subscription in the event of inter-stream bandwidth competition, based on application-specific priorities given by receivers to the layers. In our protocol, the number of messages exchanged in the event of congestion is considerably kept low based on tree topology information, obtained by a multicast tree inference technique. Simulation results have shown the effectiveness of our technique on networks with about 200 nodes. © 2002 IEEE.

The aim of this paper is to present SPIN, an interactive and integrated software environment for scientific computation. The main goal of SPIN is to allow the access to remote computational and storage resources in an easy to use and transparent way from the user's point of view. This environment, based on a multi-tier architecture, has been developed following a state of the art software engineering process which incorporates the CORBA standard (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) the PAC-Amodeus model, (a multi-agent based model for interactive systems architecture) and the Unified Process (UP) to guide the whole life-cycle of the project.

The group protocol supports applications with enough quality of service (QoS,) in change of QoS supported by the underlying network and required by applications. A flexible group service is supported for applications by cooperation of multiple autonomous agents. Each agent dynamically and autonomously takes a class of each protocol function like retransmission which is consistent with the other agents.
