In many distributed applications, communication patterns follow a data-centric message exchange style of interaction, where applications publish data and other applications express interest in this data by subscribing to it. Applications of this sort can be found in industrial automation, the C4I sector (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence), telecom equipment control, sensor networks, and network management.

This paper describes a set of characteristics that partially make up the problem space for real-time data distribution. The characteristics are divided into three groups: system characteristics, real-time characteristics, and data characteristics. The paper describes each of the characteristics, and then illustrates them with two current proposed solutions to real-time data distribution problem.

We describe Paradropper, a general-purpose global computing system based on a peer-to-peer self-organizing overlay network. In Paradropper, the peer is organized into an overlay network with "small world" characteristics, and workload is well balanced among the peers according to their workload in a decentralized manner. Particularly, it not only supports embarrassing parallel computing mode, but also allows correlativity between tasks. Moreover, the master/worker roles are extended in Paradropper, which makes it more flexible in computing environment configuration.

In this paper, we propose a novel mobile agent tracking mechanism based on hashing. To allow our system to adapt to variable workloads, dynamic rehashing is supported The proposed mechanism scales well with both the number of agents and the number of moving and querying operations. We also report on its implementation in the Aglets platform and present performance results.

The "tangible file system"/sup 1/ is a document management and access infrastructure for the ubiquitous computing era. It provides a transparent user interface which takes advantage of physical user actions for the purpose of directory management, data sharing and document location tracking. This is achieved by digitally augmenting both documents and document containers to detect the location of physical information and to trigger corresponding update actions in the electronic world. The system is built using the Datlet [9] architecture to allow any 'tool-objects' to be applied to 'data-objects', thereby enabling an even more natural user interaction based on affordances.

This paper describes how a set of agents can be used for collaboration in E-marketing and-E-Auction. We have formalized an integrated model consisting of the salient features of several agent paradigms, and link it with the distributed software engineering methodology. The integrated model proposed here has the simplicity and adaptability for realisation as a distributed transaction based paradigm for negotiation and other E-marketing problems. Also it can provide an insight into the self-organized criticality in a network of agents.

The increasing use of computers to manage everyday business poses problems for workers when they are away from their home environment. There are two key problems: . How can a mobile worker share a limited part of their home environment with colleagues in a foreign environment while maintaining its security? . How can a mobile worker identify and interact with local services available in a foreign environment? This paper describes a scheme for controlling access to pervasive Web services together with a tangible user interface for their presentation.

Exploiting autonomic adaptation in defending a distributed application is a relatively new research area. We describe how the QuO adaptive middleware was used to implement auto-adaptive defenses ranging from simple rapid response sensor-actuator tactics to more sophisticated containment and outrun strategies. In addition, we report on two experiments where live red team attacks were used to evaluate our auto-adaptive defense technology.

Current technologies for distributed application development, while being well-adapted for the client-server model, do not adequately address emerging application domains, such as multimedia, embedded or mobile applications. The black box approach, used to achieve distribution and OS transparency, prevents application developers from adapting execution environments to the semantics and constraints of their application domain, thus leading to a growing number of ad-hoc solutions which are closed, static and poorly interoperable. As a solution, we present a reflexive and dynamically adaptable execution environment,/sup 1/ based on reification of hardware resources and a standalone dynamic code generator. This architecture allows dynamic construction of specialized OS or middleware components.

In a distributed Database System (DDBS), transactions on objects can be read requests or write requests in a random manner The replication algorithm of objects critically affects the system performance. In this paper we design and evaluate a practically realizable object allocation and replication algorithm, referred to as Adaptive distributed Request Window (ADRW) algorithm, that adapts to the changing patterns of on-line requests. Our objective is to dynamically adjust the allocation schemes of objects so as to minimize the total servicing cost of all the requests that arrive at a DDBS. Finally, we use competitive analysis to quantify the performance of our ADRW algorithm.
