Lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) has become a powerful method in computational fluid dynamics and has drawn more and more attention in high-performance computing due to its particulate nature and local dynamics, especially on recent multi-core or many-core platforms. This paper develops a parallel software framework for 3D LBM simulation on a heterogeneous multi-zone processor, MT-3000. An improved pipelined algorithm named Pencil-H is proposed, which can not only fully exploit the advantages of each component of MT-3000 but also overlap the time of calculation and communication. Moreover, an architecture-aware multi-level parallelization algorithm is developed to fully utilize the computational performance of MT-3000. A benchmark test is performed to verify the reliability and test the performance of the LBM code. Experimental results show that the optimized code achieves a 32.02 × speedup compared with using 16 CPU cores and achieves a performance of 286.03MLUPS which reaches 72.3% of the theoretical peak performance. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

One of the core components in building a cloud infrastructure is the development of a middleware solution, which allows for ease in resource management. Middleware solutions for IaaS cloud architectures are responsible for managing the instantiation of virtual machine images, constructing persistent storage volumes, providing node-to-node message passing for metadata retrieval, and more. Our reasoning for developing a new cloud middleware API is to address issues that we have encountered in current cloud middleware solutions, which are centered upon ease of deployment and ease interfacing with the system. In this paper we present a cloud middleware API that we have developed to be used in building a private IaaS cloud architecture, and we compare our implementation with that of open source general purpose IaaS cloud architectures currently available.

Message Passing Interface (MPI) is a common parallel programming model in High-Performance computing fields. Recently, it has been widely used in Artificial Intelligence (Al) applications. However, the performance of those applications is limited by the memory wall problem, which is the performance gap between the processor and memory. To address these problems, we propose a novel computing architecture for accelerating k-NN query, which is the key operation of AI applications. The proposed computing architecture involves two or more computing nodes within a rack using the memory of an NMP device as a communication buffer and the accelerator of the NMP device for MPI collective communication. The superiority of the proposed method is that it reduces data copying during local computation and eliminates the network cost of gathering local computation results for global computation. Furthermore, it can enhance performance by processing data in the device's memory through near-memory processing. However, since these NMP devices are still in development, with no commercially available products currently, we have undertaken the task of developing them ourselves. Despite these circumstances, to demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed approach, we have implemented it in a single-node environment without making any unreasonable assumptions and have compared it with conventional approaches. Although we are using a single-node environment, we have designed a more sophisticated architecture, analyzed the time complexity, and compared the estimated performance of both the conventional and proposed approaches. We can conclude that the proposed computing architecture is feasible, and we anticipate an even more performance enhancement in a multi-node environment.

distributed computing based on the Master-Worker and PULL interaction model is applicable to a number of applications in high energy physics, medical physics and bioinformatics. We demonstrate a realistic medical physics use-case of a dosimetric system for brachytherapy using distributed GRID resources. We present the efficient techniques for running parallel jobs in a case of the BLAST, a gene sequencing application, as well as for the Monte Carlo simulation based on Geant 4. We present a strategy for improving the runtime performance and robustness of the jobs as well as for the minimization of the development time needed to migrate the applications to a distributed environment. © 2004 IEEE.

Existing visual engineering environments for design and control of reconfigurable industrial instrumentation systems tend to overlook the importance of the present-day heterogeneous distributed computing infrastructure. In this paper we define a virtual distributed instrument (VDI), over a computer network, as a collection of process interface devices, data acquisition and processing software modules, and a central virtual front panel (VFP). The complexity of the VDI visual design and control is tackled by decoupling the technique of programming individual task modules from the technique of configuring modules into a complete instrumentation system and the VFP design. The task module design is still based on the low level programming paradigm, while the VDI configuration and the VFP design is based on a novel, multifaceted, graphical editor, and an underpinning distributed application manager (DAM). The paper sets out the basic principles adopted in the VDI design and control, and analyses some specific system constraints.

A farming method known as aquaponics aims to be a more effective response to the world's worries about food production and scarcity. In order to produce plants or vegetables in addition to fish to meet the rising global demand for food, this technique combines aquaculture (fish farming) and aquaponics (plants grown without soil). This technique or system promises to utilize less water, fertilizer, pesticides, and space while yet producing as much as conventional farming. The challenge is making it more usable and scalable for commercial and public use. To overcome such challenges, this technique must be intelligent and automated by rigorous sensing, monitoring, and system control. Our current research aims to develop a practical smart IoT-based aquaponics system. It offers a workable solution and ideas for further investigation while also looking for gaps in the earlier investigations.

Cameras are becoming ubiquitous. Applications including video-based surveillance and emergency response exploit camera networks to detect anomalies in real time and reduce collateral damage. A well-known technique for detecting anomalies is spatio-temporal analysis -- an inferencing technique employed by domain experts (e.g., vision researchers) to answer spatio-temporal queries. In this paper, we propose a distributed framework that facilitates the development and deployment of spatio-temporal analysis applications on large-scale camera networks and backend computing resources. We make the following contributions: (a) an investigation of the computation/communication costs associated with spatio-temporal analysis, (b) a programming framework designed for large-scale spatio-temporal analysis, and (c) performance evaluations for each step of the spatio-temporal analysis with realistic algorithms.

Video quality assessment plays an important role in the quality control of video transmission and the development of video processing equipment and algorithms. With the popularity of UHD TV, the demand for UHD video quality assessment is becoming more and more urgent. In this paper, we propose a method for 4K UHD video quality assessment based on multi-feature fusion (MFF- VQA). First, we select eight frame-level features which could better reflect the perceived video quality through a series of ablation experiments. Then, we present a scheme which can fuse the eight features into a quality score. Experimental results show that, compared with other similar methods, the proposed method can achieve better performance even with lower algorithm complexity and fewer video frames.

Multi-agent systems have been contributing to the development of both theory and practice of complex distributed systems. Social networks are probably the systems that exhibit the highest degree of similarity with multi-agent systems because members of a social network interact as agents do in a multi-agent system. Multi-agent system may be the best solution to enrich and facilitate the interaction and the collaboration among the members of a social network. After an introduction on the relationships between multi-agent systems and social networks, this paper describes Blogracy, a multi-agent system that supports the interaction among the members of a social network.

Many concerns have been raised regarding the privacy issues in social media. The risks, as well as the security and privacy issues of social media in business, public policy, and legislation need to be evaluated and studied. However, there is lack of effective and practical way to quantify, measure, and evaluate privacy. In this paper, we propose a social network model, SONET, for privacy monitoring and ranking. The model provides a novel, effective, and practical way to quantify, measure, and evaluate privacy. Further, the proposed model is also flexible and built on real data from social media. The proposed privacy risk indicator, PIDX, can be calculated in real time and the value can be used for privacy monitoring and risk control.
