Despite their tremendous success, centrally controlled cloud based solutions for social media networking have inherent issues related to privacy and user control. Alternatively, a decentralized approach can be used, but ensuring content availability will be the major challenge. In this work, we propose a time based user grouping and content replication protocol that exploits the cyclic diurnal pattern in user uptime behaviour to ensure content persistence with minimal replication overhead. We also introduce the concept of beta-availability, and propose a mechanism for ensuring the availability of at least beta members within a replication group at any given time. Simulation results show that a 2-availability grouping policy delivers high content persistence without incurring significant network and storage overheads.

Autonomous parking (AP) is an emerging technique to navigate an intelligent vehicle to a parking space without any human intervention. Existing AP methods based on mathematical optimization or machine learning may lead to potential failures due to either excessive execution time or lack of generalization. To fill this gap, this paper proposes an integrated constrained optimization and imitation learning (iCOIL) approach to achieve efficient and reliable AP. The iCOIL method has two candidate working modes, i.e., CO and IL, and adopts a hybrid scenario analysis (HSA) model to determine the better mode under various scenarios. We implement and verify iCOIL on the Macao Car Racing Metaverse (MoCAM) platform. Results show that iCOIL properly adapts to different scenarios during the entire AP procedure, and achieves significantly larger success rates than other benchmarks.

The popularity of Cloud computing due to the increasing number of customers has led Cloud providers to adopt resource-sharing solutions to meet growing demand for infrastructure resources. As the adoption of resource-sharing/consolidation in Cloud computing became arguably a well-established solution, the ability the underlying virtualization systems of preventing performance interferences from customers must also be understood. Virtualization systems based on containers, such as LXC, are the basis of the next-generation of Cloud computing and have become the most popular solution under PaaS/IaaS Cloud platforms with the rise of Docker -- an open platform for developers and sysadmins to build, ship, and run distributed applications. Such platforms have enticed many attentions globally, since they leverage container-based virtualization systems to offer high scalability while low performance overheads, the performance might be solely aggravated if the customers' workloads are consolidated onto the same hardware and the isolation layer does not properly isolate the shared resources. Performance isolation is an inherent concern of such systems due to the nature as they are conceived and is still an unexplored and open research topic, the consequences might influence in the adoption under shared Cloud computing platforms where Quality-of-Service is a crucial factor that cannot be disregarded. In this paper we analyze the performance interference suffered by disk-intensive workloads within very noisy-perturbed containers (different hardware components stressed). Our results show workload combinations whose performance degradation goes up to 38%, but in contrast we expose a workload-balanced scenario wherein the performance does not suffer any interference.

In the data center, a server can work in either active state or power-saving state. The power consumption in the power-saving state is almost 0, thus it is always desirable to allocate as many VMs as possible to some active servers and leave the rest to power-saving state in order to reduce the energy consumption of the data center. In this paper, we study such a VM allocation problem. Given a set VMs and a set of servers in a data center, each VM has a resource demand (CPU, memory, storage) and a starting time and a finishing time, and each server has resource capacity. There is an additional energy cost for a server to switch from power-saving state to active state. The servers are non-homogeneous. The problem of our concern is to allocate the VMs onto servers, such that the VMs resource demands can be met and the total energy consumption of servers is minimized. The problem is formulated as a boolean integer linear programming problem. A heuristic algorithm is proposed to solve the problem. Extensive simulations have been conducted to demonstrate our proposed method can significantly save the energy consumption in data centers.

This paper analyses the feasibility of our proposed car renting system for private car owners. Extant work assumes the renter will bring back the car him-/herself or employ self driving vehicles. We postulate that cars can return on their own by enabling them to tax the renters that abandon vehicles at undesired locations and subsequently pay drivers to take them incrementally closer to the desired drop-off point. For this purpose we developed a mathematical formalism based on existing technology and approaches that enable cars with Internet of Things functionality. We also propose an agent-based architecture for the system implementation. We model continuous sanctions for misbehaving renters, that do not take steps to return the automobile to the owner at the desired time and place. We also present an analysis of the utilities of both drivers and owners. We conclude that longer trips are more advantageous for all involved. We found the system to be robust and safe to use even when cars are abandoned unexpectedly. Our model offers incentives to drivers and owners to act in good faith such that the cars can be returned within a given timeframe as long as there are enough evenly distributed renters in the system.

The way of Internet transmission greatly varies in terms of the provided quality of services. Some ways are more reliable than others. There are often compromises: the transmission path that offers the highest throughput may not be the one that offers the least delay or the lowest cost. Therefore, the "optimal" path for an Internet packet may depend on the application and / or user's needs. Because the Internet itself does not have the ability to optimize the transmission path for a certain application or user, the IP protocol provides a (quite limited) feature for higher-level protocols to transmit information to Internet Layer about how they should treat a particular data packet. According to this issue, we developed a new application which provides a bandwidth management solution for TCP protocol according to the membership affiliation of a certain Microsoft Directory Service server group. This paper presents the new approach bandwidth management application for TCP/IP protocols.

A practical problem facing Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud users is how to minimize their costs by choosing different pricing options based on their own demands. Recently, cloud brokerage service is introduced to tackle this problem. But due to the perishability of cloud resources, there still exists a large amount of idle resource waste during the reservation period of reserved instances. This idle resource waste problem is challenging cloud broker when buying reserved instances to accommodate users' job requests. To solve this challenge, we find that cloud users always have low priority jobs (e.g., non latency-sensitive jobs) which can be delayed to utilize these idle resources. With considering the priority of jobs, two problems need to be solved. First, how can cloud broker leverage jobs' priorities to reserve resources for profit maximization? Second, how to fairly price users' job requests with different priorities when previous studies either adopt pricing schemes from IaaS clouds or just ignore the pricing issue. To solve these problems, we first design a fair and priority aware pricing scheme, PriorityPricing, for the broker which charges users with different prices based on priorities. Then we propose three dynamic algorithms for the broker to make resource reservations with the objective of maximizing its profit. Experiments show that the broker's profit can be increased up to 2.5× than that without considering priority for offline algorithm, and 3.7× for online algorithm.

In this paper, we present an optimization model for task scheduling for minimizing energy consumption in cloud-computing data centers. The proposed approach was formulated as an integer programming problem to minimize the cloud-computing data center energy consumption by scheduling tasks to a minimum numbers of servers while keeping the task response time constraints. We prove that the average task response time and the number of active servers needed to meet such time constraints are bounded through the use of a greedy task-scheduling scheme. In addition, we propose the most-efficient server- first task-scheduling scheme to minimize energy expenditure as a practical scheduling scheme. We model and simulate the proposed scheduling scheme for a data center with heterogeneous tasks. The simulation results show that the proposed task-scheduling scheme reduces server energy consumption on average over 70 times when compared to the energy consumed under a (not-optimized) random-based task-scheduling scheme. We show that energy savings are achieved by minimizing the allocated number of servers.
