Partitioned query processing is an effective method to process continuous queries with large stateful operators in a distributed systems. This method typically partitions input data into non-overlapping portions, with each query plan instance installed on a separate machine processing only one portion of the data. Dynamic redistribution of load among machines is then employed to handle fluctuating stream characteristics. However, existing load redistribution solutions have made the implicit assumption that no local query optimization is conducted at runtime on any of the participating machines, i.e., all local query plan instances are static and thus remain identical. This is restrictive for dynamic stream systems, where data partitions may experience significant fluctuations in selectivities or arrival rates over time - thus warranting local plan reoptimization. This raises the new problem that the heterogeneity of plan shapes among different machines must be tackled when doing load redistribution. To address this, we propose two new load balancing strategies along with corresponding protocols, that can balance the workload across a set of machines while seamlessly handling the complexity caused by local plan changes. The PTLB strategy is plan-agnostic, requiring no detailed knowledge of the underlying query plan. The MSLB strategy is plan-aware, that is. it rebalances the load by comparing the plan shape differences on the participating machines. All proposed techniques have been implemented in the DCAPE continuous query system. Our experiments demonstrate that the application of both query optimization and load balancing results in superior performance compared to applying either of the adaptation techniques alone - as has been the state-of-the-art in the current literature. Our evaluation compares the relative applicability and efficiency of the two proposed techniques PTLB and MSLB.

FP-Growth algorithm is a Frequent Pattern Mining (FPM) algorithm that has been extensively used to study correlations and patterns in large scale datasets. While several researchers have designed distributed memory FP-Growth algorithms, it is pivotal to consider fault tolerant FP-Growth, which can address the increasing fault rates in large scale systems. In this work, we propose a novel parallel, algorithm-level fault-tolerant FP-Growth algorithm. We leverage algorithmic properties and MPI advanced features to guarantee an O(1) space complexity, achieved by using the dataset memory space itself for checkpointing. We also propose a recovery algorithm that can use in-memory and disk-based checkpointing, though in many cases the recovery can be completed without any disk access, and incurring no memory overhead for checkpointing. We evaluate our FT algorithm on a large scale InfiniBand cluster with several large datasets using up to 2K cores. Our evaluation demonstrates excellent efficiency for checkpointing and recovery in comparison to the disk-based approach. We have also observed 20x average speed-up in comparison to Spark, establishing that a well designed algorithm can easily outperform a solution based on a general fault-tolerant programming model.

With the increasing complexity of cyber-physical systems, it is essential to enhance their self-management capabilities (e.g., self-protection, self-optimization). This paper presents a data-oriented approach to achieving that goal, given that a large amount of measurements can be collected in current systems. We investigate typical data characteristics in physical systems, and identify that the collected data from those systems exhibit a wide range of diversities. Following those observations, a new analytic engine is proposed and developed to extract knowledge from measurement data streams in physical systems. The engine treats each attribute in measurements as a time series and contains an ensemble of models, each attempting to discover a specific data property accordingly, such as periodicity, pairwise dependency and so on. Therefore time series are profiled based on their properties captured by engine models. The extracted data profiles can be further used to facilitate several management tasks of system status monitoring and online anomaly detection. Our experimental results in a real power plant have demonstrated that our analytic engine can correctly profile heterogeneous time series in the system, and successfully detect a number of abnormal situations in the system operation including some system inspection events as well as component faults.

Labeling videos for affect content such as facial expression is tedious and time consuming. Researchers often spend significant amounts of time annotating experimental data, or simply lack the time required to label their data. For these reasons we have developed VidL, an open source video labeling system that is able to harness the distributed people-power of the internet. Through centralized management VidL can be used to manage data, custom label videos, manage workers, visualize labels, and review coders work. As an example, we recently labeled 700 short videos, approximately 60 hours of work, in 2 days using 20 labelers working from their own computers.

Adding self-adaptive capabilities to systems is one way to reduce administrative effort and to cope with changing contexts at runtime. Trends in pervasive computing such as IoT increase the number of devices and the amount of context information which strengthens the need for self-adaptive software. Existing frameworks for building self-adaptive software can help to reduce development effort. However, modeling the reconfiguration behavior of a system including its planned execution context is still a challenging task. It should easily be possible for developers without knowledge about building adaptation logics to specify adaptation possibilities. Further, it would be beneficial for these interconnected devices to support network adaptations as concepts such as SDN can help to change networks at runtime. The goal of our research is to enhance distributed and pervasive systems by developing a middleware for defining network adaptations using a model-based approach. Utilizing such a middleware could help to always achieve the best network performance in distributed settings at runtime.

With the worldwide increasing of Internet censorship, censorship-resistance technology has attracted more and more attentions, some famous systems, such as Tor and JAP, have been deployed to provide public service for censorship-resistance. However, these systems all rely on dedicated infrastructure and entry points for service accessibility. The network infrastructure and entry points may become the target of censorship attack. In this paper, a UGC-based method is proposed (called user-generated content based covert communication, UGC3) for covert communication in a friends-to-friends (F2F) manner. It uses existing infrastructures (i.e., UGC sites ) to form a fully distributed overlay network. An efficient resource discovery algorithm is proposed to negotiate the rendezvous point. Analysis shows that this method is able to circumvent internet censorship with user repudiation and fault tolerance.

The concept of task already exists in many parallel programming models. Programmers express parallelism by defining tasks in their applications, and runtime libraries schedule tasks on threads. However, in many task-based parallel programming models, choosing the right number of threads is still key to performance. Hence, the onus is on the programmer to decide not only about the number of tasks, but also about the optimal number of threads in order to get good performance. In this paper, we aim to show that desirable performance can be achieved by only focusing on tasks. For this purpose, we compare a purely task-centric parallel programming model called GPRM with three popular approaches (OpenMP, Intel Cilk Plus, and TBB) on two modern many core systems, the Tilera TILEPro64 and Intel Xeon Phi, which have respectively 64 and 60 physical cores integrated into a single chip. We have chosen three benchmarks with different characteristics to show that a task-centric approach such as GPRM can facilitate parallel programming while it outperforms other models in most cases. It does so by controlling only the number of tasks, rather than having to tune the number of threads.

Vehicular communication is a critical technology in Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS) that aims to improve transportation safety and efficiency. However, traditional radio-based systems, such as Cellular V2X (C-V2X) and Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC), may suffer from performance degradation in dense traffic scenarios. To address this issue, Line of Sight (LoS) technologies such as Visible Light Communication (VLC) are being explored as complementary technologies to *** utilizes LEDs on vehicles to exchange information with preceding and subsequent vehicles, allowing ITS to create a safer and less congested transportation system. Recent studies have shown that combining DSRC and VLC can minimize the performance degradation experienced by RF communication *** paper highlights the need to combine RF and LoS technologies to improve the stability and reliability of V2V communication. It discusses various LoS and RF technologies and presents combinations that can be used for communication. Finally, a hybrid strategy that combines the best properties of individual technologies is proposed, demonstrating the feasibility of such a solution.

Highly reconfigurable software radio is a key technology in B3G/4G wireless communication systems. Realistic experimentation in such systems has contributed significantly to the research of wireless communication. With increasing computational requirement, distributed cluster and dedicated hardware are demanded in real system. In addition, lots of existing computing resources in different platforms scatter around many research institutions. In this paper, we propose a novel reconfigurable software radio framework for accessing diverse computing resource in distributed nodes. Diverse computing resource is wrapped in a component, providing common interface. Dynamic reconfigurability is also supported in this framework by means of registered event for altering component parameter, which is described in XML file. Based on the proposed framework, we also present the radio application design flow, which facilitates implementation of a radio application, allowing researchers to make use of component in other platforms. The development of a realistic radio application is also presented to demonstrate the features and technique in this framework.

Optimal deployment of multi-component big data applications is difficult in geo-distributed intercloud environments. This is because of the numerous infrastructure components and options available and the variety of constraints that must be satisfied, such as application, cloud infrastructure, data processing, and privacy-related constraints. The task becomes even more complicated when multiple scientific workflows must be executed with a severely limited resource-acquisition budget. This paper proposes a many-objective constrained optimization framework that addresses these issues. The proposed framework first conducts constraint satisfaction via equivalent transformation, then many-objective optimization using nondominated sorting, reference points, and elitism. In the case of multiple workflows, both optimization for each workflow and optimization for the ensemble of workflows are considered. Furthermore, a proposed bias index is presented that indicates on an objective-by-objective basis the effect of the configuration generated for each ensemble of workflows on the optimal configuration of each constituent workflow. It also provides a means of ascertaining on a granular level the relative fairness of each objective in each composite resource configuration, and can be used as a tool for prioritizing certain aspects of a workflow when deciding on the optimal configuration to utilize. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed framework through two genome analysis workflows, for which site availability and resource reliability need to be maximized, deployment cost and makespan need to be minimized, and several constraints must be satisfied.
