The social enterprise is reported as one of the biggest IT trends, and is only increasing in popularity. Many enterprises are adopting social media communication channels such as Yammer, Chatter, and Jive for collaboration amongst employees. One key concern however is the lack of user-level access control mechanisms in these applications. In particular, introducing social media applications in government, healthcare and financial sectors requires strict controls on which employees can access or share what kinds of company data based on various federal and state regulations. The existing vendor solutions do not provide fine-grained access control policies to support these requirements, and the impact of adding such policies to these applications have not been explored yet. In this work we provide an empirical evaluation of embedding fine-grained access control policies in Group Communication systems (GCS) which serve as a mechanism for message exchange in social media applications. Our evaluation is based on a proposed framework for Role-Based Access Control for GCS in wide area networks (WAN) scenarios where the access control policies are specified and enforced using the X-RBAC policy framework. The main focus of this work is to evaluate the performance of our proposed framework and demonstrate that adding the access control mechanisms to an existing GCS incurs minimal overhead, looking especially at the challenges in WAN scenarios that are relevant to message exchange between geographically distributed employees in the enterprise. We show that with the use of caching, the proposed framework adds minimal overhead in WAN environments, while still providing the advantages of having such a framework built in the GCS's interface to enable access control for the social enterprise.

Fog computing infrastructure aims to offload computing resources from cloud providers by placing edge devices closer to end-users and/or data sources. systems and methods for developing and deploying an application in Fog nodes are still in their infancy. In this work, we present FogGuru, a fog computing platform meant to facilitate application deployment in Fog environments. FogGuru builds upon the stream processing paradigm for fog applications design; its implementation makes use of the open-source Apache Flink stream processing engine. The demo will showcase a Fog-based traffic analytics application deployed using FogGuru and running on a fog node, composed of a cluster of five Raspberry Pis.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) pose novel challenges compared with traditional networks. To answer such challenges a new communication paradigm, data-centric communication, is emerging. One form of data-centric communication is the publish/subscribe messaging system. Compared with other data-centric variants, publish/subscribe systems are common and wide-spread in distributed computing. Thus, extending publish/subscribe systems intoWSNs will simplify the integration of sensor applications with other distributed applications. This paper describes MQTT-S [1], an extension of the open publish/subscribe protocol message queuing telemetry transport (MQTT) [2] to WSNs. MQTT-S is designed in such a way that it can be run on low-end and battery-operated sensor/actuator devices and operate over bandwidth-constraint WSNs such as ZigBee-based networks. Various protocol design points are discussed and compared. MQTT-S has been implemented and is currently being tested on the IBM wireless sensor networking testbed [3]. Implementation aspects, open challenges and future work are also presented.

With the advance of network and computer techniques, the development of scalable computing becomes a new trend. To integrate and utilize distributed and heterogeneous resources efficiently, message broadcasting is an important and crucial technique for such systems. In this paper, we present a location aware broadcast scheme (LABS) for performing broadcast on irregular heterogeneous network. The LABS introduces a new scheduling scheme that based on heterogeneity of workstation and network topology. Together with a binomial tree optimization technique, LABS can arrange communications in a contention free and shortest routing path manner. To evaluate the performance of LABS, we have implemented the proposed techniques along with other algorithms. The experimental results show that LABS has good performance in different circumstances. Especially, LABS has significant improvements when the environment is with high heterogeneity.

Clustering is a popular data mining technique which discovers structure in unlabeled data by grouping objects together on the basis of a similarity criterion. Traditional similarity measures lose their meaning as the number of dimensions increases and as a consequence, distance or density based clustering algorithms become less meaningful. Shared Nearest Neighbor (SNN) is a solution to clustering high-dimensional data with the ability to find clusters of varying density. SNN assigns objects to a cluster, which share a large number of their nearest neighbors. However, SNN is compute and memory intensive for data of large size and/or dimensionality. Nearest neighbor queries are responsible for a major proportion of computations in SNN, resulting in lower efficiency for higher value of number of nearest neighbors (k). The main motivation of this work is to improve the efficiency of SNN and to parallelize it so that it can be used for clustering large high-dimensional datasets and for large values of k. Existing SNN algorithms become inefficient in these situations. In this paper, we present a new sequential SNN algorithm, R-SNN, which uses R-tree for executing neighborhood queries efficiently and exploiting spatial locality to minimize memory usage. R-SNN is benchmarked against the best available implementation of SNN and is found up to 77 times faster when tested on various real datasets. R-SNN is parallelized for distributed memory, shared memory, and hybrid systems. Significant speedup and scalability achieved can be attributed to parallelization and good load balancing strategies and also to exploitation of spatial locality. Experimental results demonstrate the same for datasets of varying dimensionality and size. The maximum speedup achieved for shared, distributed, and hybrid models are 427.19 using 48 threads, 394.24 using 32 processes, and 1380.69 on 32 nodes (with each node spawning 4 threads), respectively. With the smart grid coming near, its information systems become more and more open with services as building blocks. Different smart grid services in different control centers collaborate to realize the real-time control and protection of power systems. The publish/subscribe paradigm makes smart grid service collaborations more real-time and flexible because of the space, time and control decoupling of event producer and consumer, which can be used to establish an appropriate communication infrastructure. Unfortunately, a publish/ subscribe-based smart grid service does not know who consumes its events, and consumers do not know who produces the events either. In this environment, the smart grid service cannot directly control access because of anonymous and indirect service interactions. To address the above issues, this paper at first describes the service communication foundation for smart grid services, and then defines their security model supporting data-centric methodology. Based on such model, underpinning network capabilities can be integrated to help smart grid services control access. The key point in our access control solution is to preserve the service interaction characteristics of the publish/subscribe-based smart grid services: anonymous, multicast and session-control. So two special kinds of event types are used to accomplish authorization request and granting with being consistent with the publish/subscribe paradigm. Attaching policy method is adopted to preserve the anonymity feature for collaborating smart grid services. A delegation scheme for brokers to enforce policies is finally constructed based on attribute-based encryption, which also brings confidentiality for smart grid services.

Internet based applications for Mobile Devices such as Smartphones, Tablets, PDAs, portable media players etc. work on simple one-to-one client-server data distribution model. Concomitant with growing popularity of such devices and applications, however, are increasing concerns about volume of global online digital content generated by these devices. Network traffic originating from these devices has marked a multi-fold increase over past few years and hence, the incumbent content availability and maintainability cost. In this paper we present a novel approach for mobile data offloading, "SmartParcel", by encouraging collaborative data sharing among spatio-temporally co-existing mobile devices, thus, minimizing the overall network usage and traffic. Smart- Parcel ensures high service availability to the users in events of unavailability of access points, unavailable or limited cellular data connections, unavailability of 3G or LTE hardware etc. We develop the technology for Android but the architecture can be extended to other available mobile software platforms. Our trace based simulation results advocate high data availability to user even with its limited participation and fewer data requests to the servers.

Nowadays, modern vehicles become more and more smart and interconnected, which leads to new paradigms and applications, such as autonomous driving. However, when it comes to data collection and sharing between vehicles or between vehicles and infrastructure or manufacturers, privacy becomes an challenge. Especially personal data should be protected from unauthorized access. To do so, anonymization should be employed which removes sensitive information before it is shared with others. In the literature, anonymization has been the focus of research in different domains, such as health, but not as much in the vehicle domain. In this paper, we propose different use cases from a large German car manufacturer to classify data collection use cases based on their requirements and challenges for anonymization.

Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a set of tools and techniques that can be used to obtain insights from high-volume, high-velocity continuous streams of events. CEP-based systems have been adopted in many situations that require prompt establishment of system diagnostics and execution of reaction plans, such as in monitoring of complex systems. This article describes the Query Analyzer and Manager (QAM) module, a first effort toward the development of a CEP as a Service (CEPaaS) system. This module is responsible for analyzing user-defined CEP queries and for managing their execution in distributed cloud-based environments. Using a language-agnostic internal query representation, QAM has a modular design that enables its adoption by virtually any CEP system.

To accelerate multiphysics applications, making use of not only GPUs but also FPGAs has been emerging. Multiphysics applications are simulations involving multiple physical models and multiple simultaneous physical phenomena. Operations with different performance characteristics appear in the simulation, making the acceleration of simulation speed using only GPUs difficult. Therefore, we aim to improve the overall performance of the application by using FPGAs to accelerate operations with characteristics which cause lower GPU efficiency. However, the application is currently implemented through multilingual programming, where the computation kernel running on the GPU is written in CUDA and the computation kernel running on the FPGA is written in OpenCL. This method imposes a heavy burden on programmers;therefore, we are currently working on a programming environment that enables to use both accelerators in a GPU–FPGA equipped high-performance computing (HPC) cluster system with OpenACC. To this end, we port the entire code only with OpenACC from the CUDA-OpenCL mixture. On this basis, this study quantitatively investigates the performance of the OpenACC GPU implementation compared to the CUDA implementation for ARGOT, a radiative transfer simulation code for fundamental astrophysics which is a multiphysics application. We observe that the OpenACC implementation achieves performance and scalability comparable to the CUDA implementation on the Cygnus supercomputer equipped with NVIDIA V100 GPUs. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
