The cost of migrating stateful operators in distributed stream processing has attracted research attention. Reactive migration in response to context changes is the common approach. Other migration scheduling strategies, like proactive migration based on prediction, and delayed migration are nearly neglected. This paper investigates four algorithms that explore these alternative scheduling strategies. The algorithms are implemented in a prototype stream processing overlay and run over an emulated network. Experiments with synthetic workload reveal that (1) proactive migration can reduce average event delivery latency, and (2) that it is important to handle noise in the data to avoid wrong adaptations. Experiments with real workload demonstrate that (1) pro-activity is not always beneficial, and (2) careful timing of migration depending on operator state, has a large potential to limit overhead. The experiments demonstrate a reduction in state size of 38 %, resulting in a 30 % reduction in freeze time. Consideration of operator state size is especially important. The state transfer can lead to contention that further harms event delivery and/or causes network timeouts for cases with limited network resources. © 2022 ACM.

Publish/subscribe is a scalable communication method for one-to-many communications. Centralized Pub/Sub protocols rely on a centralized broker that is a trusted third party managing the subscriptions. To prevent data alteration by the broker, or by an entity outside of the system, the literature proposes E2E security solutions. The issue with this solution is that they all introduce a third party who is hardly trustable in practice. Recently, Pub/Sub protocols have been proposed using the blockchain to manage the subscriptions and provable data deliveries. In this paper, we focus our work on one publish/subscribe protocol, called SUPRA, that uses the blockchain only when necessary. We explain why the current version of the protocol does not respect the publish/subscribe paradigm because a subscriber has to encrypt and sign each data as many times as there are subscribers. Then, present how to update the protocol in order for each data to be encrypted and signed only once, regardless of the number of subscribers, while keeping the security properties of the protocol. The result is a publish/subscribe protocol with strong delivery guarantees and traceability that can be used to share sensitive data. © 2022 ACM.

We are developing an autonomous distributed storage system that autonomously relocates data blocks according to their utilization and the effective performance of storage. This paper proposes an enhancement to the distributed storage system to address large network environments where many network nodes are connected to multiple network switches. In the proposed method, the latency time when a network frame travels on the network is evaluated together with the effective performance of the storage, and this is used to determine the destination of the data block. Simulation evaluation results show that in the networks with cascading multiple network switches and high I/O load on storage, the performance improvement is significantly greater than that of the previous method. This showed that our storage system can provide sufficient performance improvement even in large network environments. © 2022 IEEE.

The maturing domain of ad hoc networking still holds some major challenges on its way to commercial exploitation. The dynamic and decentralized nature of ad hoc networks calls for new paradigms in the design of distributed applications. Most notably, there is a need for self-organization mechanisms in the middleware layer to enable medium-scale and large-scale distributed applications. In this paper we present MESHMd1, a middleware platform for ad hoc networks that is built on mobile agents and tuple space technology. MESHMd1 provides basic building blocks for the implementation of self-organizing distributed applications for ad hoc networks. Unlike other middleware platforms, MESHMd1 puts a high emphasis on mobility awareness, decoupling and bio-inspired coordination primitives. We discuss the aspects of ad hoc networking and self-organization and derive the basic architecture of MESHMd1 before we present our prototype implementation.

In this paper an efficient hybrid MAC-layer protocol for dependable multi-channel networking structures is presented and evaluated. This new protocol handles C sub-channels totally, that is c physically or frequency divided sub-channels for the information or data packets and one (1) request sub-channel, where the request packets are transmitted and (C=c+1). The proposed mechanism for the accessing of the request sub-channel slots is a TDMA-like scheme. An effective reservation mechanism based on the transmitted requests is used for the deterministic accessing of the slots of the information sub-channels, mainly at high loads. Additionally, the random access ALOHA-like protocol is selected for the dynamic accessing of the Free Information Slots (FISs) for low traffic conditions, when the stations transmit no requests. This combination offers bounded packet delay and high throughput - mean delay performance under mixed (asynchronous/synchronous) traffic. On the other hand, the proposed multi-channel networking structure offers high operational reliability due to the existed channel redundancy.

In this paper, data structures for reducing redundancy of routing information on the distributed key-value store based on order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph with the load balancing method are proposed and evaluated. In this system, data are divided by order preserving linear hashing and Skip Graph is used for overlay network. For load balancing, by storing many Skip Graph nodes in one physical node, any highest-load Skip Graph can be divided. By this method, load balancing can be done. But the number of Skip Graph nodes becomes very many and redundant routing information exists. But this redundant routing information has regularity. In this paper, two types of data structure for reducing redundant routing elements are proposed. They are tree structure and array structure. By calculating space for them and searching time, the proposed data structures are experimentally evaluated. © 2022 IEEE.

An agreement protocol enables a system of n nodes in a distributed network to agree on a common input value. In the implicit version of the problem, only a subset of the nodes are required to decide the common value. This paper focuses on the message complexity of randomized implicit agreement in synchronous distributed networks. It has been shown by Augustine et al. [PODC 2018] that if the nodes have access to a shared coin, then implicit agreement can be solved with high probability1 using messages2 in expectation. However, their algorithm works only for binary input values, i.e, the input values given to the nodes are from the set {0, 1}. In this paper, we extended the result to the multi-valued setting where the input values may come from a larger but constant sized domain. We present an algorithm that solves the multi-valued implicit agreement problem with matching performance guarantees as in binary agreement. © 2022 ACM.

Reconfigurable computing systems show the advantage of high flexibility and high-performance or low-power relative to traditional computing systems. Reconfiguration can change user logic statically or dynamically. The reconfiguration is a key feature in the reconfigurable computing system, however, the reconfiguration techniques are not considered enough. One of the reconfiguration techniques must be chosen for usage target characteristics of reconfiguration. This article shows the cost of typical reconfiguration techniques which can be applied to not only field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) but also coarse-grained reconfigurable arrays (CGRAs). We call these microarchitectures, field-programmable logic (FPL). We focus on three device classes;traditional configurable FPL (ex. FPGA), a partially reconfigurable FPL and a multi-context FPL. We investigate how the size and frequency of reconfiguration can be taken care of and how much speed-up is theoretically expected from a perspective of reconfiguration cost. In addition, the investigation introduces temporal and spatial configuration cache techniques. © 2022 IEEE.

Rapid development in the fields of emerging technologies like 5G communications, Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIOT) and edge-cloud-mobile computing has opened up a wide range of possibilities towards developing the next-generation of smart cities. Multi-access Edge computing (MEC) as an integrated part of ETSI standard 5G architecture promises better user experience, resource utilization and application performance by bringing computing and storage facilities at the edge of the network, closer to the data sources. Urban informatics, which is used for better realization of future smart cities, can leverage the power of MEC for real-time analysis and inference from massive amount of multimodal sensory data. This tutorial focuses on the scope and capabilities of MEC in the broad domain of urban informatics. We will discuss MEC fundamentals including the architecture, major technology enablers like SDN, NFV, etc., specific challenges covering resource management, offloading, caching and migration of content/task, and future research directions. Then we plan to motivate the audience with the relevance and scope of further research in urban computing and urban informatics giving special attention to urban information systems (UIS). The premise of UIS management revolves around sensing, forwarding, and processing of real-time multimodal sensory data at the network edge. Finally we bring in the challenges associated with MEC based data management for different application verticals covering health, pollution, transportation, governance and so on with a specific case study in the connected/autonomous vehicles domain. © 2022 ACM.

In this paper, we propose a novel cache consistency maintenance scheme, called Scalable Asynchronous Cache Consistency Scheme (SACCS), for mobile environments. It relies on the following three key features: (1) Use of flag bits at server and MU's cache to maintain cache consistency;(2) Use of an identifier (ID) for each entry in MU's cache after its invalidation in order to maximize the broadcast bandwidth efficiency;(3) Rendering all valid entries of MU's cache to uncertain state when it wakes up. These three features make the SACCS a highly scalable algorithm with minimum database management overhead. Comprehensive simulation results show that the performance of SACCS is superior to those of existing algorithms.
