The paper presents a procedure for the preliminary design of a permanent magnet axial flux machine (PMAFM) with coreless stator for the power management of a small-scale flywheel energy storage system (FESS). The PMAFM is sized according to the main FESS ratings by means of a 2D analytical formulation elaborated from a simplified 3D finite element analysis (FEA), taking into account both curvature and radial end-effects on the air-gap magnetic field, as well as the PM back-iron magnetic saturation. To complete the electromagnetic performance assessment, the coil self-inductance is calculated by a 3D analytical technique, applicable to any coil shape. These procedures enable a very fast calculation of the main electromagnetic quantities as functions of on the PM and coil sizes. In particular, a parametric analysis is carried out to optimize the PMAFM electromagnetic design, mainly focusing on the reduction of the ohmic losses and of the torque ripple. The comparison with the results of corresponding 3D FEAs proves the effectiveness of the proposed design method. © 2018 IEEE.

The ubiquity of smartphones and their rich set of onboard sensors have created many exciting new opportunities. One important application is activity recognition based on smartphone inertial sensors, which is a fundamental building block for a variety of scenarios, such as indoor pedestrian tracking, mobile health care and smart cities. Though many approaches have been proposed to address the human activity recognition problem, a number of challenges still present: (i) people's motion modes are very different;(ii) there is very limited amount of training data;(iii) human activities can be arbitrary and complex, and thus handcrafted feature engineering often fail to work;and finally (iv) the recognition accuracy tends to be limited due to confusing activities. To tackle those challenges, in this paper we propose a human activity recognition framework based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using smartphone-based accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer, which achieves 95.62% accuracy, and also presents a novel ensembles of CNN solving the confusion between certain activities like going upstairs and walking. Extensive experiments have been conducted using 153088 sensory samples from 100 subjects. The results show that the classification accuracy of the generalized model can reach 96.29%. © 2018 IEEE.

The lack of mature tool support is one of the main reasons that make the industry to be reluctant to adopt Software Product Line (SPL) approaches. A number of systematic literature reviews exist that identify the main characteristics offered by existing tools and the SPL phases in which they can be applied. However, these reviews do not really help to understand if those tools are offering what is really needed to apply SPLs to complex projects. These studies are mainly based on information extracted from the tool documentation or published papers. In this paper, we follow a different approach, in which we firstly identify those characteristics that are currently essential for the development of an SPL, and secondly analyze whether the tools provide or not support for those characteristics. We focus on those tools that satisfy certain selection criteria (e.g., they can be downloaded and are ready to be used). The paper presents a state of practice with the availability and usability of the existing tools for SPL, and defines different roadmaps that allow carrying out a complete SPL process with the existing tool support.

In the current environment, the functionality and the usage of Geographic Information systems (GIS) have grown steadily, resulting in many diversified and complex artifacts. Although there is a different GIS used for other regions with different goals, they have versatile features and requirements. So, for intensive software reuse, such as Highly Configurable System engineering (HCSE), different techniques can be applied. Despite extensive research on Highly Configurable systems engineering in recent years, the same has not yet been defined in the field of GIS In this research work, we identified the requirements and capabilities for a standard product of Web-based GIS. We shared them jointly, which allowed us to regenerate many of the different objects and software variants, which will enable software engineers to configure his application. We then define the functionality and technical architecture of a highly configurable system that uses current technology to develop web-based applications. Lastly, we designed a tool to configure and assemble components to generate the desired products. Subsequently, the proposed platform is flexible to create its GIS product as per each customer's specific needs. © 2020 IEEE.

The numerical analysis of complex event-continuous processes represented by the class of Cauchy problems with constraints on an event function is considered. The processes are specified in the developed unique textual-graphical language LISMA using Harel statecharts. The program models are edited, numerically analyzed, and their results are processed in the computer-aided analysis environment ISMA. The numerical analysis is performed using a collection of traditional and developed original explicit numerical integration methods of variable order and step with extended stability domains and an original algorithm detecting unilateral events in hybrid systems. The efficiency of the original methods has been tested on typical examples of hybrid systems. The chosen visual specification of program models satisfies the representation semantics of discrete-continuous processes with complex operational mode switching logic. Moreover, such a specification is understandable to an end user, who is rather interested in analyzing complex dynamic processes using simple and comprehensible tools for composing and editing models and being able to change the model structure and parameters fast. © 2022 IEEE.

Giant magnetic glass-coated particles produced by low-cost, large-scale production technologies are highly suitable as biomolecule detection markers and can fluoresce in three dimensions with large-scale production. Further, when a magnetic mciroparticle-organic molecule coupling complex having a variety of shapes is used, it is possible to implement multiplex detection with one fluorescent material. In addition, code recognition through image analysis enables multi-detection and maintains high-sensitivity accuracy. © 2019 CBMS-0001.

Human Action recognition is a complex problem that attracts more and more researchers from the scientific community due to its applicability in domains such as security and behavior analysis. At its core, this problem entails classifying an action into a finite set of classes. Neural network based approaches, and especially convolutional neural networks, are a good starting point for solving the problem of human action recognition. Due to their nature, they can recognize spatio-temporal features very well, making them ideal for working with sequences of RGB images. In this paper are proposed three types of convolutional neural network architectures that contribute to solving the problem of Human Action Recognition. The first one is based on 2D kernels, the second one on 3D kernels, and the third one on TCN (Temporal Convolutional Network) units. Each one is presented with its structure, advantages and disadvantages, along with metrics that measure their performance. The one based on 2D convolutions is the fastest, but it also has the lowest performances. The second one is a good middle ground, useful in certain situations which require a fast classifier operating on different action classes. Finally, the one based on TCNs performs close to some of the best existent models. It represents a viable solution to the proposed problem. It can classify many actions, using only RGB images of fairly low resolution, in real time. The three models have been tested on the RGB part of the NTU RGB+D dataset. The 2D convolution-based model obtained an accuracy of 7.43% on the Cross-Subject split and 10.28% on the Cross-View split. The 3D convolution-based model obtained 58.77% on Cross Subject and 56.11% on Cross-View. Finally, the TCN-based model obtained an accuracy of 80.45% on Cross-Subject and an accuracy of 82.57% on Cross-View. © 2021 IEEE.

Cold data contributes a large portion of the big data today and is usually stored in secondary storage. Various sketch data structures are implemented to represent the stored elements and provide constant-time membership queries. Considering the large volume and infrequent access of cold data, we envision three rationales of cold data representation: 1) parallelized insertion, 2) accurate representation, and 3) constant-time query/deletion. The existing sketches, however, fail to achieve these rationales simultaneously. To this end, we propose a novel sketch named Parallelized cuckoo Filter (PCF) in this paper. PCF divides the standard cuckoo filter into multiple homogenous segments. An additional hash function is introduced to assign an element to a segment. The element will be inserted into the selected segment. With such a design, element insertions in PCF can be naturally parallelized. Besides, as a variant of the cuckoo filter, PCF naturally realizes the accurate representation and constant-time query/deletion requirements. Comprehensive experiments further indicate that PCF achieves the three rationales simultaneously. © 2021 IEEE.

Blood components provide significant and meaningful information for diagnostics at a molecular level. However, seizure and detection of low-abundance clinically relevant biomarker proteins is a daunting task. In this paper, we demonstrate a label-free, ultrasensitive, and highly selective detection of viral proteins with limit-of-detection (LoD) six orders of magnitude lower than the most sensitive ELISA diagnostic methods by integration of molecular recognition processes with highly dispersive Fano resonance in optofluidic plasmonic sensors. Our diagnostic platform opens the door to diagnostics of early-stage viral infections without resorting to any need for complex instrumentation at point-of-care and resource-limited settings. © 2019 CBMS-0001.
