Cooperation among mobile robotic platforms is beneficial for various industrial applications, particularly in the warehouse and logistics sector. Formation control of mobile robots for collaborative transportation of an object, also known as collective transport, is a key challenge for cooperative robotic systems. This paper investigates communications-based formation control which is a promising approach. Based on an analytic model for wirelessly controlled leader-follower formation, the impact of connectivity imperfections on path-tracking performance has been investigated for two different types of mobile robots. Performance evaluation provides insights for wireless-centric system design.

Wi-Fi devices become increasingly susceptible to mutual interference in congested network scenarios. If a device starts to receive a new frame in the presence of concurrent interference signal, its preamble reception can be seriously damaged, which spoils the channel estimation process. The resulting corrupted channel state information (CSI) causes persistent decoding errors throughout the data payload. This paper presents a comprehensive study into the impact of corrupted CSI on Wi-Fi performance. Through experimental study and link-level analysis, we verify that actual receiver performance is highly dependent on CSI acquisition at the preamble, which has never been reflected by any physical layer abstraction models. We develop a realistic model that reflects the impact of corrupted CSI on overall frame reception. Applying our model to ns-3 simulator, we revisit network performance in interference-prone scenarios, to assess consistency with real-world Wi-Fi systems.

In this paper, we investigate the problem of optimizing the network performance of a fleet of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in static positions. More precisely, we allow each UAV to change its orientation in order to improve the quality of communication with its neighbours. This form of controlled mobility takes advantage of the effective radiation pattern of each UAV. We build a decentralized scheme based on the hill climbing optimization approach without a priori knowledge of the antennas radiation patterns. Then, we propose a simulation framework, based on ns-3, allowing to evaluate the gain in network performance. We provide results in several deployment scenarios involving different rate adaptation algorithms and network sizes.(1)

Consider a multi-hop wireless network in which devices act as anonymizing routers. Even if devices anonymize their link transmissions, an adversary may still be able to infer key information by observing the traffic patterns in the network. In this work, we quantify what impacts how well a Kalman-filter based adversary can infer unlinkability, that is, the probability that different pairs of devices are communicating, from anonymized link transmissions. We assume that devices do not reorder packets to mix traffic and thereby increase unlinkability. Instead, we show that traffic mixing is still possible due to the use of multi-hop routing and broadcast transmissions, with the amount of mixing dependent on the network characteristics. In simulation, we find that i) for unicast links, as network connectivity increases, unlinkability decreases, while for broadcast links as connectivity increases unlinkability increases, ii) link dynamics increase unlinkability in poorly connected topologies, iii) well-connected topologies achieve the same level of unlinkability with fewer transmissions per packet delivered, and (iv) a lattice topology has consistently good unlinkability in different scenarios.

In this paper we study the fundamental problem of allocating with efficiency and fairness the available resources in a CDMA wireless system that supports multi-rate multimedia services. We propose the Channel Adaptive Rate Scheduling (CARS) algorithm which adopts the use of dynamically assigned data rates that match the channel capacity in order to improve the system throughput and overcome the problems associated with the channel chnaging conditions, the variable system capacity and the transmission power limitation. In addition to the throughput improvement CARS also achieves the objective of fairness by adjusting the users' weights dynamically. The performance analysis and evaluation of our proposed algorithm is achieved via modeling and simulation in terms of achievable throughput and fairness.

The smart home concept can significantly benefit from predictive models that take proactive management operations on home actuators, based on users' behavior evaluation. In this paper, we use a small-scale physical model, the ScaledHome-2 testbed, to experiment with the evolution of measurements in a suburban home under different environmental scenarios. We start from the observation that, for a home to become smart, in addition to IoT sensors and actuators, we also need a predictive model of how actions taken by inhabitants and home actuators affect the internal environment of the home, reflected in the sensor readings. In this paper, we propose a technique to create such a predictive model through machine learning in various simulated weather scenarios. This paper also contributes to the literature in the field by quantitatively comparing several machine learning algorithms (K-nearest neighbor, regression trees, Support Vector Machine regression, and Long Short Term Memory deep neural networks) in their ability to create accurate and generalizable predictive models for smart homes.

The recently proposed QUIC protocol has been widely adopted at the transport layer of the Internet over the past few years. Its design goals are to overcome some of TCP's performance issues, while maintaining the same properties and basic application interface. Two of the main drivers of its success were the integration with the innovative Bottleneck Bandwidth and Round-trip propagation time (BBR) congestion control mechanism, and the possibility of multiplexing different application streams over the same connection. Given the strong interest in QUIC shown by the ns-3 community, we present an extension to the native QUIC module that allows researchers to fully explore the potential of these two features. In this work, we present the integration of BBR into the QUIC module and the implementation of the necessary pacing and rate sampling mechanisms, along with a novel scheduling interface, with three different scheduling flavors. The new features are tested to verify that they perform as expected, using a web traffic model from the literature.

Platooning of cars or trucks is one of the most relevant applications of autonomous driving, since it has the potential to greatly improve efficiency in road utilization and fuel consumption. Traditional proposals of vehicle platooning were based on distributed architectures with computation on board platoon vehicles and direct vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications (or Dedicated Short Range Communication - DSRC), possibly with the support of roadside units. However, with the introduction of the 5G technology and of computing elements at the edge of the network, according to the multi-access edge computing (MEC) paradigm, the possibility emerges of a centralized control of platoons through MEC, with several significant advantages with respect to the V2V approach. For this reason, in this paper we investigate the feasibility of vehicle platooning in a centralized scenario where the control of vehicle speed and acceleration is managed by the network through its MEC facilities, possibly with a platooning-as-a-service (PaaS) paradigm. Using a detailed simulator, we show that, with realistic values of latency and packet loss probability, large platoons can be effectively controlled by MEC hosts.

The next wave of drone applications is moving from repeatable, single-drone activities such as evaluating propagation environments to team-based, multi-drone objectives such as drone-based emergency services. In parallel, testbeds have sought to evaluate emerging concepts such as highly-directional and distributed wireless communications. However, there is a lack of intersection between the two works to characterize the impact of the drone body, antenna placement, swarm topologies, and multi-dimensional connectivity needs that require in-flight experimentation with a surrounding testbed infrastructure. In this work, we design a Multi-Dimensional Drone Communications Infrastructure (MuDDI) to capture complex spatial wireless channel relationships that drone links experience as applications scale from single-drone to swarm-level networks within a shared three-dimensional space. Driven by the challenges of outdoor experimentation, we identify the need for a highly-controlled indoor environment where external factors can be mitigated. To do so, we first build an open-source drone platform to provide programmable control with visibility into the internal flight control system and sensors enabling specialized coordination and accurate repeatable positioning within the isolated environment. We then design a wireless data acquisition system and integrate distributed software defined radios (SDRs) in order to inspect multi-dimensional wireless behavior from the surrounding area. We achieve and demonstrate the value of measurement perspectives from diverse altitudes and spatial locations with the same notion of time. Finally, we demonstrate how multi-dimensional models from experimental measurements can be implemented to simulate multi-drone networks on a practical scale.
