The safety and commercial benefits of Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) raised interests towards inter-vehicle networking technologies such as Vehicular Ad-hoc Network (VANET). Being an approved standard for wireless access in vehicular environments, IEEE 802.11p attracts a lot of research attentions, especially on its broadcasting performance. However, most of the previous network performance models paid little attention to vehicle distribution, or simply assumed homogeneous car distribution. It is obvious that vehicles are distributed non-homogeneously along a road segment due to traffic controls and speed limits at different portions of the road. In light of the inadequacy, we present in this paper an original methodology to study the performance of 802.11p VANETs with practical vehicle distribution in urban environment. An empirically verified stochastic traffic model is adopted, which incorporates the effect of urban settings (such as traffic lights) on car distribution and generates practical car density profiles. Based on the knowledge of car density at each location from the traffic model, the 802.11p broadcasting model is developed and a new metric, Broadcasting Performance Index (BPI), is introduced to better characterize the broadcasting performance and packet collision probability in VANETs. Furthermore, the analytical closed form for BPI is derived and its accuracy is confirmed with extensive simulation. In general, our results demonstrate the applicability of the proposed methodology on modeling protocol performance, and shed insights into the performance analysis of other communication protocols and network configurations in urban vehicular networks.

We propose an analytical model to evaluate the performance of NOMA-based slotted ALOHA for mMTC under the assumption that base stations and devices are distributed according to mutually independent stationary point processes. For the NOMA, we consider a simple scenario in which perfect interference cancellation can be conducted at each base station. As performance metrics, we focus on the probability for a device successfully transmitting data to the nearest base station (transmission success probability) and the expected number of devices from which a base station can correctly decode the signals (throughput of a base station). We establish a universal relationship between these two performance metrics that holds for general stationary point processes, including Poisson point processes. Using this universal relationship, we derive analytical expressions for the two metrics for the case in which the base stations and devices are distributed according to mutually independent Poisson point processes. Numerical experiments using simulations show that throughput can be improved by up to 15% compared to the case where interference cancellation is not applied.

The benefits of agent mobility have been recognized for a variety of applications such as wireless ad hoc environments and network management. mobile agent toolkits have been developed in response;however, they do not address the need for conceptual modeling techniques required for the analysis and design phases of mobile agent applications. On the other hand, conceptual level modeling techniques developed as part of Agent Oriented Software Engineering methodologies do not specifically address the requirement for modeling mobility. This paper represents a first step towards developing support for conceptual modeling of mobile agents, in terms of an ontology describing the abstract concepts and inter-relationships required to model agent mobility. The specific aim of this paper is to present an ontology that is widely applicable, not constrained by the peculiarities of any one mobile agent toolkit or application, and specified using an easily understood informal vocabulary. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper proposes an approach for the modeling and analysis of autonomous agent mobility patterns which is based on discrete-time Markov chains graphically-enhanced to improve modularity. Mobility patterns are associated to autonomous agents when they have to fulfil a distributed task involving migration to remote agent servers where agent computation and/or interaction can likely take place. Two kinds of analysis can be performed on the obtained models: reliability and time analysis. Reliability analysis relies on statistical/mathematical tools and allows for testing the reliability of agent patterns carried out on non-completely reliable networks of agent servers. Time analysis is based on an appositely defined analytical simulation framework and enables the evaluation of time-related performance indexes. Using this approach, several types of patterns were identified, modeled, and analysed: ping-pong, itinerary and free walk. They can be associated to classes of agent tasks in specific application domains.

A wireless-optical broadband access network (WOBAN) shows promise as potential 5G access infrastructure. Since network slicing allows efficient sharing of physical network resources, we consider the provisioning of availability-guaranteed slices in a WOBAN supporting mobile edge computing (MEC). A new definition for the availability of a slice is proposed accounting for a slice that functions only partially because of the failure of a fiber link, a microwave link, a base station (BS) node, and/or an optical line terminal (OLT). An integer linear programming (ILP) model and a simple but effective heuristic algorithm that balances the network traffic load and maximizes the slice availability are developed to maximally provision availability-guaranteed slices. simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed approaches.

The integration of the third generation (3G) wireless Wide-Area Networks (WWAN) and the IEEE 802.11 wireless Local-Area Networks (WLAN) has drawn much attention from both industry and academia. To achieve an effective and efficient integration between the two networks with very different characteristics, nonetheless, is still an open issue. One of the challenges is to provide an integrated strategy for achieving a seamless vertical handoff of mobile users roaming between the two network domains where the delay, delay jitter, and packet loss probability can be well controlled. This paper is committed to study a two-step vertical handoff mechanism based on linear regression which is further modeled through an analytical approach. The proposed vertical handoff scheme is characterized by its adaptability to different quality of service (QoS) requirements by manipulating a threshold on the expected handoff instant. A new approach of mobility analysis is introduced to facilitate modeling of vertical handoff delay by taking advantage of Markov chain techniques. We have seen merits gained in our scheme in achieving a good trade-off between the average handoff delay and the multi-tunnel time by manipulating a threshold value, where both analytical and simulation results prove the effectiveness.

In this paper, we discuss a time synchronization approach to the time divergence problem in hybrid network emulation. Such emulation comprises primarily a discrete-event simu- lated network and virtual machines that send and receive traffic through the simulated network. For slower than real- time network simulations, the rate of time advance on virtual machines (real time) is faster than that of the discrete-event time. Consequently, packet transmission latency and other metrics in such hybrid network emulations will be distorted. As a result, e.g., TCP sessions between virtual machines may unduly time out. To address this problem, we have de- veloped TimeSync, which tracks discrete-event simulation time to control time advance on virtual machines for slower than real time simulations so that time perception in the hybrid network emulation system is synchronized. We de- scribe how TimeSync works and present our experimental evaluation and analysis.
