software quality and reliability can be improved using various techniques during the software development process. One effective method is to utilize software metrics and defect data collected during the software development life cycle and build defect predictors using data mining techniques to estimate the quality of target program modules. Such a strategy allows practitioners to intelligently allocate project resources and focus more on the potentially problematic modules. Effectiveness of a defect predictor is influenced, among other factors, by the quality of input data. Two problems which often arise in the software measurement and defect data are high dimensionality and class imbalance. This paper presents an approach for using feature selection and data sampling together to deal with the problems. Three scenarios are considered: 1) feature selection based on sampled data, and modeling based on original data;2) feature selection based on sampled data, and modeling based on sampled data;and 3) feature selection based on original data, and modeling based on sampled data. Several software measurement data sets, obtained from the PROMISE repository, are used in the case study. The empirical results demonstrate that classification models built in scenario It result in significantly better performance than the models built in the other two scenarios.

Traceability links are used to ensure co-evolution among related software artefacts. That is, to ensure that changes to the application are correctly and completely propagated. Much emphasis has been put on reverse engineering and co-evolution of vertical traceability links (i.e., across artefacts of the different levels of abstraction like UML, requirements documents, source code). However, today's applications require automatic support to deal with complex dependencies across heterogeneous source code entities (e.g., it is not uncommon for web applications to require multi-language and multi-paradigm programming). This paper introduces MaTraCa, an Eclipse plugin to maintain traceability links among entities of the same level of abstraction (i.e., code) in complex applications. MaTraCa stands for Managing Traceability Changes. MaTraCa focuses on horizontal links, that is, relations across software artefacts of the same level of abstraction such as source code, config files, html forms, etc.

Middleware technologies based on the W3C recommendations [1], [2], [3], [4], are widely utilised for accessing data and services at huge servers, even from small, but powerful, clients running on laptops, PDAs, and smartphones, which provide end-user interfaces. All the support, based on procedural communication and object-based technologies, is aimed specifically at this area and designed to simplify application development. Our research is targeted to a slightly distinct area, typical for surveillance, data gathering, measurements, and remote control. Same/similar clients (i.e. prepared by the standard middleware tools and supported by the same operating environment) are required to communicate over the same interfaces, without mediation by proxies, to tiny sensors and controllers. Resources (computing power, memory spaces) available to these devices still remain limited and implementation of the standard interfaces for these tiny devices becomes a challenge.

Nowadays standards provide recommendations for system development process in various phases and activities, aiming to address and reduce the risks associated to poor or flawed designs. Indeed, to increase systems assurance levels, a variety of concerns like safety, security and reliability are currently considered as critical and targeted by standards. However, to ensure such assurance levels, all stakeholders involved in the product development cycle (manufacturers, regulators, etc.) need to have a clear understanding of the standards contents. This paper presents an approach that aims to ease the common understanding of standards and their adoption by automatically generating models from them. The approach mostly relies upon the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) language. The potential benefits of this structured graphical view of standards are to facilitate their comprehension, visualization and navigation by the stakeholders involved in product development cycle.

On-line analytical processing (OLAP) provides tools to explore data cubes in order to extract interesting information. Nevertheless, it cannot offer any explanation of relationships that could exist within data. To achieve this goal, the association rules were performed on data cubes. We focus in this work on a particular class of association rules which is the cyclic association rules. The latter aims to discover rules that occur in user-defined intervals at regular periods. Generally, the generated patterns do not take into consideration the specificities of the multi-dimensional context i.e. the measures and their aggregations. In this paper, we propose a new method of extraction of cyclic association rules from both dimensions and measures. In addition, we redefine the quality metrics of the derived patterns using the summarizability of measures through applying the suitable aggregation functions. To prove the utility of our approach, we undertake an empirical study on a real data warehouse.

Approaches for measuring semantic similarity between words have been widely employed in various areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Cognitive Science and Knowledge engineering. A new semantic similarity measure is proposed in this paper, which exploits the knowledge retrieved from a semantic network (i.e., WordNet) and the Internet. In particular, the structure information from WordNet and the statistic information obtained from the Internet are combined to quantify the semantic similarity between words. The new similarity measure is evaluated by comparing the rating results with two sets of human benchmark data. Experimental results indicate that, the proposed similarity measure outperforms previous WordNet-based semantic similarity measures.

software development effort estimation is fundamental part of software project management. It is the process used to predict the most probable effort required to perform specific work. Based on forecasted effort it is possible to determine costs and allocate required resources. The effort estimation inherently includes various factors and therefore the process of decision making and producing the predictions regarding required efforts is in its nature a process of reasoning with uncertainty. To enhance this process software engineers are using various approaches, application of data mining and knowledge discovery techniques proved to be especially effective. This paper reports a study in which Bayesian networks (BN) are used to improve software development effort estimation. Study examines tree major entities involved in estimation process - projects, work items and estimators. The analysis is based on real data collected from software projects executed in Croatian software company. Study found that Bayesian networks are especially suitable for modeling of effort estimation and can significantly contribute to management of software projects.

A new Domain Specific Language (DSL) based approach to Deep Learning (DL) lifecycle data management (LDM) is presented: a very simple but universal DL LDM tool, still usable in practice (called Core tool);and an advanced extension mechanism, that converts the Core tool into a DSL tool building framework for DL LDM tasks. The method used is based on the metamodel specialisation approach for DSL modeling tools introduced by authors.

A data Mining Approach for Detecting Higher-Level Clones in software

Code clones are similar program structures recurring in variant forms in software system(s). Several techniques have been proposed to detect similar code fragments in software, so-called simple clones. Identification and subsequent unification of simple clones is beneficial in software maintenance. Even further gains can be obtained by elevating the level of code clone analysis. We observed that recurring patterns of simple clones often indicate the presence of interesting higher-level similarities that we call structural clones. Structural clones show a bigger picture of similarity situation than simple clones alone. Being logical groups of simple clones, structural clones alleviate the problem of huge number of clones typically reported by simple clone detection tools, a problem that is often dealt with postdetection visualization techniques. Detection of structural clones can help in understanding the design of the system for better maintenance and in reengineering for reuse, among other uses. In this paper, we propose a technique to detect some useful types of structural clones. The novelty of our approach includes the formulation of the structural clone concept and the application of data mining techniques to detect these higher-level similarities. We describe a tool called Clone Miner that implements our proposed technique. We assess the usefulness and scalability of the proposed techniques via several case studies. We discuss various usage scenarios to demonstrate in what ways the knowledge of structural clones adds value to the analysis based on simple clones alone.

Secure software development processes can reduce the quantity of security errors and the vulnerabilities involved in software projects. A secure development process is composed by activities that propose the insertion of security requirements in all software development phases. These activities can be based on standards and/or security models such as SSE-CMM, ISO/IEC 27001, ISO/IEC15408. The problem is that the standards and security models describe security requirements which can be followed but do not describe how these requirements must be implemented in software processes. Security patterns describe good security practices which can be incorporated to the software process and satisfy the requirements that are described by the standards and models. This work proposes a methodology for the tailoring of software processes based on security requirements that are defined by the security practices of the Systems Security engineering Capability Maturity Model (SSE-CMM). The tailoring has as basis a process framework that is elaborated from the Rational Unified Process (RUP) and security patterns proposed on the literature.
