Information Retrieval (IR) approaches are nowadays used to support various software engineering tasks, such as feature location, traceability link recovery, clone detection, or refactoring. However, previous studies showed that inadequate instantiation of an IR technique and underlying process could significantly affect the performance of such approaches in terms of precision and recall. This paper proposes the use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) to automatically configure and assemble an IR process for software engineering tasks. The approach (named GA-IR) determines the (near) optimal solution to be used for each stage of the IR process, i.e., term extraction, stop word removal, stemming, indexing and an IR algebraic method calibration. We applied GA-IR on two different software engineering tasks, namely traceability link recovery and identification of duplicate bug reports. The results of the study indicate that GA-IR outperforms approaches previously published in the literature, and that it does not significantly differ from an ideal upper bound that could be achieved by a supervised and combinatorial approach.

software engineering social content, such as Q&A discussions on Stack Overflow, has become a wealth of information on software engineering. This textual content is centered around software-specific entities, and their usage patterns, issues-solutions, and alternatives. However, existing approaches to analyzing software engineering texts treat software-specific entities in the same way as other content, and thus cannot support the recent advance of entity-centric applications, such as direct answers and knowledge graph. The first step towards enabling these entity-centric applications for software engineering is to recognize and classify software-specific entities, which is referred to as Named Entity Recognition (NER) in the literature. Existing NER methods are designed for recognizing person, location and organization in formal and social texts, which are not applicable to NER in software engineering. Existing information extraction methods for software engineering are limited to API identification and linking of a particular programming language. In this paper, we formulate the research problem of NER in software engineering. We identify the challenges in designing a software-specific NER system and propose a machine learning based approach applied on software engineering social content. Our NER system, called S-NER, is general for software engineering in that it can recognize a broad category of software entities for a wide range of popular programming languages, platform, and library. We conduct systematic experiments to evaluate our machine learning based S-NER against a well-designed rule-based baseline system, and to study the effectiveness of widely-adopted NER techniques and features in the face of the unique characteristics of software engineering social content.

Providing guarantees on the system behavior is mandatory for safety-critical autonomous vehicles. Among these guarantees, proving the fulfillment of real-time constraints and reliability requirements on the system is a key issue, as their violation could result in unexpected and unsafe behaviors. The violation may come from the complicated interaction between software and hardware modules, or transient hardware faults. AUTOSAR, the most popular industrial standard in the automotive domain, provides an open standardized architecture for software development, where an application can be deployed on multiple electronic control units (ECUs). We present a verification and validation method for the design of such safety critical autonomous control systems that could tolerate transient faults. The embedded implementation of an AUTOSAR model is transformed into a three-layer system model in timed automata, so that system behavior can be evaluated and checked with hard real-time constraints and the implementing architecture. We demonstrate the feasibility of the method with a simplified controller developed for the autonomous vehicles.

Architecture-based reliability analysis has gained prominence in the recent years as a way to predict the reliability of a software application during the design phase, before an investment is made in any implementation. To apply this analysis, the parameters comprising the architectural model must be estimated using the limited data and knowledge available during the design phase. 'These estimates, as a result, are inherently uncertain. Contemporary approaches, however, do not consider these uncertainties, and hence, may produce inaccurate reliability results. This paper presents a Bayesian approach to systematically consider parametric uncertainties in architecture-based analysis. The novelty of this approach lies in determining credible internals for the model parameters as function of their posterior distributions. By leveraging these intervals, we illustrate how to: (i) quantify the impact of uncertainty in a specific parameter on the system reliability estimate;(ii) evaluate when a sufficient amount of data has been collected to reduce the uncertainty to an acceptable level;and (Hi) assess the impact of prior knowledge regarding the parameters in improving the system reliability estimate.

We present, in this paper, a new metric capturing in an integrated way different attributes of object-oriented systems. The metric uses basically control flow paths and probabilities. It captures the interactions between classes and related control. The study presented in this paper aims at exploring empirically the relationship between the proposed metric and testability of classes. We investigate testability from the perspective of unit testing. We designed and conducted an empirical study using data collected from two open source Java software systems for which JUnit test cases exist. To capture testability of classes, we used different metrics to quantify the corresponding JUnit test cases. In order to evaluate the capability of the new metric to predict testability of classes, we used statistical tests using correlation. The achieved results provide evidence that there exist a significant relationship between the proposed metric and testability of classes.

Using centralised data storage systems has been the standard practice followed by online service providers when managing the personal data of their users. This method requires users to trust these providers and, to some extent, users are not in full control over their data. The development of applications around decentralised data vaults, i.e., encrypted storage systems located in user-managed devices, can give this control back to the users as sole owners of the data. However, the development of such applications is not effort-free, and it requires developers to have specialised knowledge, such as how to deploy secure and peer-to-peer communication systems. We present Vaultage, a model-based framework that can simplify the development of data vault applications. We demonstrate its core features through a social network application case study and include some initial evaluation results, showing Vaultage's code generation capabilities and some profiling analysis of the generated network components.

When it comes to software analysis, several approaches exist from heuristic techniques to formal methods, which are helpful at solving different kinds of problems. Unfortunately very few initiative seek to aggregate this techniques in the same platform. BINSEC intend to fulfill this lack of binary analysis platform by allowing to perform modular analysis. This work focusses on BINSEC/SE, the new dynamic symbolic execution engine (DSE) implemented in BINSEC. We will highlight the novelties of the engine, especially in terms of interactions between concrete and symbolic execution or optimization of formula generation. Finally, two reverse engineering applications are shown in order to emphasize the tool effectiveness.

The Region of Epirus, located in a rather isolated and up to now underdeveloped part of Greece, has made a significant effort in establishing and promoting an integrated environment for health care delivery through the development of a regional Health Telematics Network, the Epirus-Net. Epirus-Net is a fixed wireless data network, that gradually extends throughout the region and connects regional hospitals and health care centers. The network provides access to Integrated Electronic Health Record services, resource services (Directory of Healthcare Providers), educational services (distant learning courses on medicine) as well as specialized medical tele-conference and tele-consultation services. Within the context of this paper the network infrastructure and the computer-based patient record, CPR, system, is described.

The formal modelling of System of Systems (SoS) is challenged by the autonomy of the participating constituent systems, as system owners may not be willing to share executable models that precisely describe their system's internals. This paper describes an approach for using distributed simulation within a collaborative development environment to enable the analysis of the entire SoS, without the detailed models of the constituent systems being shared.
