As semiconductor design approaches physical limits, computer processing speeds are stagnating. This poses significant challenges for traffic simulations, which are becoming more and more computationally demanding. To maintain fast execution times while accommodating more complex simulations, it is essential to utilize the parallel computing capabilities of modern hardware. This paper discusses the need for an updated architectural design in the MATSim traffic simulation framework to take advantage of parallel computing infrastructures. We introduce a prototype that adapts the existing traffic simulation logic to a distributed parallel algorithm. Extensive benchmarks have been conducted to evaluate the prototype's performance and identify its limitations. The results demonstrate that the prototype performs up to 100 times faster than the current implementation. Based on these findings, we advocate for the integration of a distributed traffic simulation within the MATSim framework and outline necessary steps to enhance the prototype.

This paper explores the integration of distributed event processing in the context of real-time routing within a parallel transportation simulation framework for the Multi-Agent Transport Simulation (MATSim). A novel simulation prototype, utilizing Rust and MPI, demonstrates significant reductions in computation time by applying domain decomposition of the network and assigning each part to a separate process. However, sharing and processing events within this setup remains challenging. We present a proof of concept for integrating distributed event processing. Our evaluation has shown that realtime routing significantly increases simulation runtime because uneven distribution of routing requests increases load imbalances and makes speedups less efficient. Sharing event data between processes benefits from smaller subdomains. However, global synchronization for sharing data leads to waiting times introduced by load imbalances.

Scientific applications generate massive amounts of data, posing storage limitations and network traffic challenges. While scientists struggle with the usage of application-side compression and parallel I/O, we design a transparent feature. Our Lustre-based prototype automatically applies lossless compression, offering flexibility in compression-related decisions to minimize computational costs and optimize application performance. We outline the challenges posed by our prototype and illustrate through a comprehensive assessment how integrating Lustre and ZFS as backend solutions provides the essential elements for performance and scalability: specifically, asynchronous operations and parallel processing of compression. In our evaluation, we illustrate the interaction of different buffer levels within a distributed system. Additionally, we showcase how the I/O pattern, hardware setup, and various system software optimizations can impact overall performance and influence the choice of compression strategy.

In HPC supercomputers, the CPU, memory, network and storage play a critical role in application performance. Established benchmarks measure the theoretical peak performance of these components, but storage benchmarks often focus solely on I/O and lack realism. To address this, we present numio, a benchmark that simulates and evaluates overlapping compute, communication and I/O phases. Furthermore, we present a novel ensemble-driven system benchmarking strategy. This approach involves running multiple benchmarks in parallel to analyse their interactions and assess the system's ability to handle the workload. Using a real-world example, we demonstrate how this approach reveals performance issues in complex HPC systems that remain hidden when using traditional methods using isolated benchmarks on empty systems.

Moving objects' trajectory data is becoming increasingly available with the omnipresent GPS-equipped devices, e.g., smart phones, smart watches, etc. Identification of similar trajectories is a fundamental requirement of many real-world applications, for instance, car pooling, road planning, epidemic contact tracing. There exist a number of studies focusing on trajectory similarity search, where given a query trajectory, similar trajectories are searched from a trajectory store. GPS devices generate trajectories as a continuous data stream, highlighting the critical need for real-time and continuous trajectory similarity search. Thus, given a trajectories stream (SG) and a trajectory store (R), we propose a distributed, continuous and real-time similarity search between SG and R. The proposed method employs an index-based strategy to facilitate effective similarity search, with the added capability of execution in distributed environments to ensure scalable processing. A comprehensive empirical study is provided to demonstrate the efficiency and pruning capability of the proposed approach.

distributed systems, spanning pervasive, cloud, and edge computing, require robust scheduling for tasks and data management, facing challenges like hardware diversity, QoS, localization, and energy efficiency. Current solutions often lack a comprehensive approach, failing to achieve balanced load management, QoS, and notably in minimizing application energy use, a key modern concern. We propose a distributed scheduler using multidimensional spaces and data structures aimed at comprehensive load balancing, energy efficiency, and QoS. The scheduler indexes devices within the structure based on diverse criteria such as hardware availability, GPS, and energy features. It then organizes applications into abstract graphs, where nodes are containers and their data items (units of data accessed by the containers), and edges are the transfer rates among them. To migrate containers, the scheduler performs range queries within the structure for optimal devices. To organize data items, it finds the barycenter of the devices executing the containers linked to them. We evaluated our scheduler's effectiveness using the PISCO simulator, comparing it against other energy-efficient schedulers. © 2024 IEEE.

An approach to the management of non-functional concerns in massively parallel and/or distributed architectures that marries parallel programming patterns with autonomic computing is presented. The necessity and suitability of the adoption of autonomic techniques are evidenced. Issues arising in the implementation of autonomic managers taking care of multiple concerns and of coordination among hierarchies of such autonomic managers are discussed. Experimental results are presented that demonstrate the feasibility of the approach.
