The advancements in mobile hardware and network technologies facilitate the processing power, storage capability, and connection quality. Such developments enable sophistic functions, ubiquitous power- and bandwidth-hungry applications that fundamentally changes the individual's lifestyle. Although Cloud Computing technologies have already been leveraged to coordinate with the capability and battery-constraint mobile User Equipment (UE), the long-distance propagation delay downgrades the network QoS and user QoE. In this paper, we propose a queueing-based Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) model that concerns the offloading procedure, especially in the time-constraint scenarios. A queueing model is proposed for the offloading process, considering the dynamic network queueing delay. A heuristic scheduling model is designed to maximize the offloading energy and execution efficiency. A regression prediction model is implemented to achieve dynamic resource allocation. In the experiment, the proposed model is compared to the recent studies, and the results indicate that the proposed model can outperform the current studies in terms of execution time and energy reservation.

Synthetic workloads are commonly used to exercise simulation tools for performance, performance tuning, and scalability studies. Sometimes these workloads are simple streams of test data following various distributions and in other cases these workloads are generated by more complex, configurable systems. An example of the former is a stream of input events at different arrival rates that might be used to test the performance of an event queue data structure. An example of the latter is the PHOLD simulation model that is often used to contrast the performance implications of different design solutions in a parallel simulation engine. One of the key challenges for synthetic workloads is the question of setting the parameters so that the workload properly reflects the behavior of actual workloads. This paper collects profile data from multiple real-world discrete-event simulation models in multiple configurations and sizes from the ROSS and WARPED2 repositories. A principle focus of this paper is the capture and reporting of profiling data to understand event granularities and event profile data to assist in the configuration of synthetic discrete event model generators.

Efficient design for Fog Computing applications need to consider the optimal use of the available resources at the edge and the Cloud, switching from one other depending on the current status, execution price, and user requirements. This is a complex task, as the optimization needs to consider the distributed and dynamic nature of the environment. There is the need to support investigation efforts by enabling researchers to experiment with Fog environments in a controlled and reproducible fashion. Unfortunately, most simulators do not implement a service model suited for Fog computing applications. This paper presents Phileas, a simulator that supports the definition of Fog services. Phileas allows to reenact the behavior of Fog services and evaluate different service policies and allocation strategies.

The performance of wireless Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) schemes is directly tied to the underlying network protocol and the rerouting strategies used after a handoff. Analytical models are proposed for the various interactions and verified by simulation to determine the buffer requirements at base stations (BS) and to estimate disruption time which is the time between the arrival of the last packet to the mobile receiver while at the cell of the old BS and the arrival of the first packet to the mobile receiver while at the cell of the new BS. This evaluation will aid a protocol designer to pick the right combination of wireless TCP scheme and rerouting strategy based on the network properties including mobility patterns, network topology, and others. Towards this, we provide for the first time protocols for reliable communication that takes into account every combination of wireless TCP schemes and rerouting strategies.

simulation is a key technique for enabling business process analysts to predict the process behavior at design time. However, some issues limit the effectiveness of business process simulation (e.g., lack of simulation know how, costs and difficulties for gathering process data, semantic gap between the business process model and the simulation model). This paper proposes a model-driven method that automates the generation of executable business process simulation code. In order to address the increasing complexity and to take into account the inherent collaborative aspects of modern business processes, the simulation code produced by the proposed method replicates the business process distributed structure (in terms, e.g., of a service-oriented architecture) by including a set of simulation services that are orchestrated into a distributed simulation execution. The characterization of business processes in terms of the required performance properties is introduced through standard BPMN annotations according to a well-defined syntax, thus avoiding the need of additional languages. The implementation of the executable simulation code is based on the eBPMN language, a domain-specific language that preserves the semantic behavior of the original BPMN standard.

Server replication is a common approach to improving the scalability of a service on the Internet. For this approach, the task of finding an appropriate server from a set of replicas is a critical issue. We have proposed in a previous work an architecture where a broker is used to provide server selection on a per session basis. When the number of servers and/or the number of clients becomes large, a single broker may not have sufficient capacity to handle the load. An extended architecture based on the replication of brokers is therefore considered. We first discuss alternative organizations that support access to multiple brokers and the needed cooperation between brokers in order to achieve server selection effectively. We then propose a server selection policy for our multiple broker architecture and evaluate its performance by simulation.

Fog computing is an emerging architecture for processing, storing, and controlling the data at the edge of the networks, which is becoming a popular technology for Internet of Things (IoT). As a next-generation networking architecture, Information-Centric Network (ICN) has been introduced into networked fogs to establish efficient data exchange based on name, caching, content features, etc., which gives the IoT an opportunity to store the huge geo-distributed data at the edge of the networks and be less dependent on the Cloud, thus fulfilling the delay-sensitive needs of the end-users. Nevertheless, efficient distributed storage is a must for information-centric fog networks, because of the huge content exchange and geo-distributed data. To address this, this paper proposes an efficient storage scheme by integrating Binary Reed-Solomon erasure code with ICN mechanism in fog networks. Specifically, the data are encoded into named data blocks and are distributed as well as stored into distributed fog nodes. The fog network performs information-centered with horizontal fog-to-fog communications to retrieve the data blocks efficiently. Moreover, the data is then recovered even with some of the data blocks missing, thus ensuring the reliability of storage at distributed fogs. simulation results show the efficiency and advantages of the proposed distributed storage scheme.

Renewable based power generation has significantly increased over the last years. However, this process has evolved separately from electricity markets, leading to an inadequacy of the present market models to cope with huge quantities of renewable energy resources, and to take full advantage of the presently existing and the increasing envisaged renewable based and distributed energy resources. This paper proposes the modelling of electricity markets at several levels (continental, regional and micro), taking into account the specific characteristics of the players and resources involved in each level and ensuring that the proposed models accommodate adequate business models able to support the contribution of all the resources in the system, from the largest to the smaller ones. The proposed market models are integrated in MASCEM (Multi-Agent Simulator of Competitive Electricity Markets), using the multi agent approach advantages for overcoming the current inadequacy and significant limitations of the presently existing electricity market simulators to deal with the complex electricity market models that must be adopted.

Every year, natural and human-induced disasters result in infrastructural damages, monetary costs, distresses, injuries and deaths. Unfortunately, climate change is strengthening the destructive power of natural disasters. In this context, distributed simulation-based disaster management and response systems have been proposed to cope with disasters and emergencies by training first responder with the latest ICT technology, and improving the disaster detection and search/rescue missions during disaster response. With the recent advances in wireless communication, and the proliferation of portable computer and micro-sensor devices, we are witnessing a growing interest in using wireless multimedia sensor networks and collaborative virtual environment technologies for safety and security class of applications. In this talk, we will give an overview of some research projects related to smart emergency preparedness and response that are currently being investigated at the PARADISE Research Laboratory at the Ottawa. We will show how collaborative virtual environment, context aware computing, wireless multimedia, and wireless sensor networks can be used to ensure public safety and security. We will focus upon the design of large-scale distributed simulation system for applications that require critical condition monitoring using both location/context aware computing and wireless sensor technologies. The second part of the talk will conclude by presenting two testbeds that are currently under development at PARADISE: the LIVE testbed, and the SWiMNet testbed. LIVE is a testbed for applications that require emergency preparedness and response. LIVE's architecture integrates wireless sensor networks with wireless multimedia and virtual environment technologies. SWiMNet is a testbed of a high-performance simulation system that supports very detailed and realistic model specifications to enable the design and evaluation of new protocols and applications for future generations o

Location management is one of the most important issues in mobile networking systems. Most current mobile systems employ a two-tier database structure to store mobile users' information. HLR (Home Location Register) is used to retrieve user's information, and VLR (Visitor Location Register) is the temporal database for storing visitors' profile. In the case that the number of users exceeds the capacity of the VLR due to mobility, database overflow occurs. In this paper, we propose a new policy, the least frequent replacement policy, which selects the least frequently accessed users as replacement candidates. Extensive simulation is carried out for predicting the performance of the existing replacement policies and the proposed least frequent policy. Our simulation results show that the most idle and least frequent policies outperform the inactive and random replacement policies in most cases and that the least frequent policy performs slightly better than the most idle replacement policy.
