the Fifth-Generation mobile networks (5G) and Beyond 5G (B5G) have been proposed to support a variety of application scenarios, such as enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), ultra-Reliable Low-Latency Communications (uRLLC), and massive Machine Type Communications (mMTC). On the other hand, Mobile Edge computing (MEC) and Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) technologies have been widely advocated by service providers to meet diverse service demands and reduce operational costs. To alleviate the pressure on the edge network, resource consumption can be minimized by considering the reuse of Virtual Network Function (VNF) instances. However, implementing VNF chain deployment with latency guarantees and resource efficiency in a distributed network architecture remains an urgent issue to be addressed. In this paper, we explore the Service Function Chains (SFCs) orchestration problem with distributed edge network resources, aiming to design efficient service flow routing and resource allocation schemes to significantly respond to local user requests. We propose a low-complexity distributed SFCs Orchestration algorithm with VNF Reuse (DSOR), which initially uses local information at the edge to explore the VNFs orchestration scheme and executes the distributed service orchestration. Subsequently, service chains are deployed based on asynchronous consensus to enhance network utility and reduce resource costs. Finally, the performance of DSOR is evaluated through extensive simulation experiments. the experimental results indicate that DSOR can improve the utilization of network resources, as well as the response rate to edge service requests.

this paper presents a distributed learning approach designed to assist physicians in diagnosing diseases based on a patient's current health status, clinical history, and test results. the methodology relies on neural network models and supervised classifiers to identify illnesses. It utilizes word embedding to capture semantic relationships among hospital admissions, symptoms, and diagnoses. Additionally, it introduces a method to evaluate the connection between different diagnoses based on symptom similarity, aiding in prediction tasks. Experimental results on a real-world Electronic Health Records (EHR) dataset showcase the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed technique, providing clinically relevant interpretations. these findings suggest promising avenues for future enhancements of the framework as a valuable diagnostic tool.

Advancements in stream data processing engines (SDPE) increasingly require the use of modern Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL)-based management strategies and distributed computing paradigms like serverless computing to enhance efficiency and scalability across the edge-cloud continuum. this study explores the challenges associated with this integration, especially with Apache Spark. Despite their advanced capabilities, modern SDPEs still lack full maturity in terms of efficiently managing dynamic resource demands and seamlessly integrating with other technologies. To fill this gap, we propose the architecture of ISIM-SDP, acronym for Integrating Serverless and DRL for Infrastructure Management in Streaming Data Processing across edge-cloud continuum. By implementing a DRL-based approach, the system dynamically adjusts resource allocation in real-time, enhancing the flexibility and scalability of computational resources. ISIM-SDP leverages serverless frameworks to reduce operational overhead and improve system responsiveness. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of ISIM-SDP in optimizing resource usage and improving the throughput and latency of stream processing tasks.

the paper focuses on the project of photovoltaic systems for the power supply of the energy communities (EC) in distributed grids in Ukrainian war conditions. the situation in ukrainian power grid is characterized with overloaded and obsolete conventional power sources and transmission stations and chaotic development of renewable energy sources. the main task of this study is to help develop strategy of smart and efficient usage of newly build RES in preselected communities to help to stabilize the main network and to ensure higher energy resilience of particular municipalities. the paper deals with simulation and optimization of the energy community creation and with proposal of covering the energy needs. the case study is based on the set of preselected locations and shows the optimization process of proposed photovoltaic system for the power supply and high temperature battery for efficient energy storage.

distributed inference enables multiple distributed computing devices to cooperatively perform statistical inference or data analysis tasks in order to reduce the inference delay. Due to the device heterogeneity in terms of processing capacities, some devices may experience slower processing speeds or even fail to compute the inference task. this leads to a larger inference delay or sometimes inference task failure. In this work, we propose a novel learning-based coded inference framework for convolutional neural networks (CNNs) by introducing redundant computing devices. By using an encoder to determine the inference inputs of redundant devices and an decoder to reconstruct the convolutional segment result of the CNNs, we show that our framework can significantly enhance the resilience and efficiency of distributed inference systems. By deploying a robust encoding-decoding scheme, our framework dynamically compensates for devices with sub-optimal performance or computational failures. this ensures the overall system to maintain high levels of accuracy and reduce inference latency, even in heterogeneous device environments. Our evaluation results reveal the profound impact of our proposed framework on enhancing distributed inference tasks for CNNs. Based on the experiments conducted on image classification across various realistic datasets, we have demonstrated that our framework maintains high accuracy levels, even in scenarios where some distributed devices encounter failures, validating the robustness of our proposed approach.

the topic-based publish-subscribe paradigm plays an important role among many applications, as it enables a seamless interconnection of heterogeneous client applications and devices, through easy-to-use high-level abstractions. While publish-subscribe systems are usually provided in a centralized (i.e., broker-based) model, a peer-to-peer (P2P) topology can bring several benefits, such as increased resiliency and scalability, better load distribution, and a better handling of hot topics that comprise a large amount of publishers and subscribers. the presence of hot topics can result in high outgoing bandwidth usage, which is an important consideration in edge-based deployments. this paper presents MQTT2EdgePeer, a robust and scalable P2P brokerless topic-based publish-subscribe middleware that provides compatibility with MQTT-based applications. MQTT2EdgePeer, which is built on top of a structured edge P2P overlay, provides two message delivery approaches that enable a trade-off between efficient bandwidth distribution among the nodes, and latency minimization. Our findings reveal that MQTT2EdgePeer provides improved scalability, better load distribution, and reduced latencies, in comparison with a state-of-the-art distributed Single Root per Topic (DSRT) approach.

We propose an approach to designing energy-efficient in-memory decision tree (DT) machine-learning circuits using memristors and PAth-based computing. DT machine learning (ML) algorithms are computationally simple, and they require fewer data to train compared to other ML algorithms, making them an attractive option for edge computing. Existing work on creating energy-efficient DT circuits has utilized FLOW-based computing. However, these approaches require costly write operations before every inference, leading to high energy utilization. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to generate PAth-based DT in-memory crossbar circuit designs that only require a write during circuit synthesis and not before every inference, leading to highly energy-efficient inference. We test the performance of our PAth-based design on multiple standard machine learning datasets and demonstrate that our approach achieves a 47% reduction in energy consumption, on average, compared to the state-of-the-art.

While the first generation of cloud computing systems mitigated the job of system administrators, the next generation of cloud computing systems is emerging to mitigate the burden for cloud developers-facilitating the development of cloud-native applications. this paradigm shift is primarily happening by offering higher-level serverless abstractions, such as Function as a Service (FaaS). Although FaaS has successfully abstracted developers from the cloud resource management details, it falls short in abstracting the management of both data (i.e., state) and the non-functional aspects, such as Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. the lack of such abstractions implies developer intervention and is counterproductive to the objective of mitigating the burden of cloud-native application development. To further streamline cloud-native application development, we present Object-as-a-Service (OaaS)-a serverless paradigm that borrows the object-oriented programming concepts to encapsulate application logic and data in addition to non-functional requirements into a single deployment package, thereby streamlining provider-agnostic cloud-native application development. We realized the OaaS paradigm through the development of an open-source platform called Oparaca. In this tutorial, we will present the concept and design of the OaaS paradigm and its implementation-the Oparaca platform. then, we give a tutorial on developing and deploying the application on the Oparaca platform and discuss its benefits and its optimal configurations to avoid potential overheads.

On today's Internet, end-user debugging is largely limited to simple tools such as ping and traceroute, supplemented by purpose-built services such as bandwidth measurement, and website uptime monitors. Unfortunately, these tools do not provide sufficient data to isolate specific network faults, nor do they give the user results that can be validated by external entities. Furthermore, since networks disparately treat measurement packets, as our empirical results confirm, measurement packets need to be indistinguishable from data packets. In this paper, we argue for a distributed network debugging infrastructure and describe Debuglet, a deployable and incentivized architecture that allows inter-domain network debugging using real data packets and user-defined code, which facilitates accurate and flexible measurements of the network performance experienced by data packets. We implement the Debuglet system, and demonstrate its feasibility by deploying it on a network testbed, evaluating its measurement accuracy, and analyzing its deployment costs.

IoT smart applications must deal with the inherently distributed nature of IoT infrastructures that may vary among different deployments. For example, in urban environments, some deployments may require distributed edge nodes to support the sensors and actuators, while others may skip this processing stage and go directly to the cloud. We propose the concept of an IoT computing Continuum, or IoTinuum, with multiple computing stages spread over the distributed IoT infrastructure. We present the modeling and implementation of two urban use cases for a 6-stage IoTinuum: smart drone delivery and smart structural monitoring. In our experience, the IoTinuum improves the understanding of function placement in application development and reveals important performance tradeoffs.
