In Germany and throughout Europe, train operation using the European Train control System (ETCS) is the most common solution for current trains running on the mainlines. this paper presents a safety analysis of the Automatic Train Operation (ATO) system. the System Modeling Language (SysML) is used to visually model the logical relationships of the mainline ATO system based on ETCS. the Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) is used to perform a qualitative safety analysis to identify all possible failure modes of the system. State-space modeling and dynamic quantitative analysis are carried out using a Markov chain model. In order to verify the degree of safety of the ATO model, a real data set from a train operator was used for simulation. We show that using an ETCS-based ATO system to control trains can achieve higher reliability on the mainline with less maintenance than if experienced drivers control trains.

the stereotype threat, either racial or gender-related, has been proven as one of the factors influencing negatively students worldwide, causing from declines in academic performance and decrease in engagement to complete dropout from schools and universities. Gamification, or the use of game elements in context of non-games, has been widely used increase engagement and improve performance of students, with overall positive effects. Nonetheless, gamified environments are often stereotyped and cause opposite effects, preventing desired results from happening. Students can present inherent factors capable of opposing these threats, such id the case of self-efficacy, i.e., the ability to believe that one is capable of taking the necessary actions to complete a given task. In this study, we applied an experimental design with gamified environments with neutral and gender-stereotyped boosts and threats to male and female students of two technical schools. Results indicated that boost messages presented higher influence over male participants through increase expectations of self-efficacy. Moreover, female participants presented relatively higher performance results under neutral or threat conditions while compared to gender-oriented boosts. Based on these results, it is possible to conclude that boost messages were less effective, even causing negative effects on the performance female participants.

We present a randomized field trial delivered in Carnegie Learning's MAthia's intelligent tutoring system to 12,374 learners intended to test whether rewriting content in "word problems" improves student mathematics performance within this content, especially among students who are emerging as English language readers. In addition to describing facets of word problems targeted for rewriting and the design of the experiment, we present an artificial intelligence-driven approach to evaluating the effectiveness of the rewrite intervention for emerging readers. Data about students' reading ability is generally neither collected nor available to MAthia's developers. Instead, we rely on a recently developed neural network predictive model that infers whether students will likely be in this target sub-population. We present the results of the intervention on a variety of performance metrics in MAthia and compare performance of the intervention group to the entire user base of MAthia, as well as by comparing likely emerging readers to those who are not inferred to be emerging readers. We conclude with areas for future work using more comprehensive models of learners.

In view of the high temperature operation characteristics of the embedded starter/generator for the more electric engine (MEE), the influence of material property change on motor performance at high temperature is studied. Furthermore, considering the influence of high temperature, the electromagnetic calculation of doubly salient electro-magnetic machine (DSEM) is carried out, and the excitation design principle of DSEM under high temperature is pointed out. the performance of DSEMs using DW310 silicon steel and 1J22 iron-cobalt alloy material was compared. Based on the silicon steel material, the structural parameters of DSEM are analyzed. According to the key parameters obtained from structural parameter analysis, Box-Behnken method and genetic algorithm were used to carry out the multi-parameter and multi-objective optimization design. the optimization objectives include excitation current, voltage ripple and cogging torque, to meet the torque and power quality requirements of MEE. then the performance of DSEM at room temperature and high temperature is analyzed by the finite element method, which verifies the effectiveness of the design. Finally, a high-temperature and high-speed DSEM prototype was processed. At the same time, in order to cooperate with the test, a DSEM ground simulation test system platform for MEE was built to test the prototype. Its design experience lays a foundation for the embedded DSEM design of more electric aircraft.

this paper presented the results of X-band 4-bit variable gain amplifier (VGA) based on domestic 90 nm CMOS technology. Using of the VGA in the core-chip design can replace digital step attenuator and buffer amplifier. the methods of the amplifier gain control are considered, and the optimal VGA topology is selected. the key to proposed solution is adding the steering transistors at high attenuation states that decrease the gain RMS error. the developed X-band 4-bit VGA performance is comparable with state-of-the-art results: gain is 11 dB, attenuation range is 7.5 dB with 0.5 dB step, input and output return losses are better than -9 dB, output power P1dB is not less 10 dBm, gain and phase RMS errors are 0.25 dB and 2.5°, respectively. the chip size is 1× 0.9mm2, while power DC consumption is 55 mW. the advantage of the designed circuit is that no additional amplitude control circuit, such as DAC is required. © 2023 IEEE.

Resilience is a widely studied concept that is a key objective in the design and development of sustainable systems. this is especially true for the agricultural systems critical to food production, economic viability, and sustainability of our communities, as farmers seek to meet increasing demand in the face of shocks such as climate change and natural disasters. Although there is a rich body of work examining resilience, there is limited understanding of how the concept of resilience should be tailored for agricultural systems. this study seeks to address this gap by performing a systematic literature review of 50 papers selected from SCOPUS using the PRISMA protocol. A summary of research topics and characteristics by geographical region is presented. the paper also categorizes the types of shocks studied and the corresponding response methods. Results suggest that the focus of resilience research changes by region, which may indicate that design strategies and objectives should also differ by region. Furthermore, the work identifies a need for more simulation-based quantitative research into the impact of resilience. © the Author(s), 2023. Published by Cambridge University Press.

Representation learning of time series is common in tasks like data mining and improves performance in downstream tasks. However, existing methods aren’t appropriate for streaming time series due to two main limitations: first, the efficiency of representation learning methods can be a concern when dealing with streaming time series. Secondly, most of representation learning are designed for timestamp-level representation. they cannot reveal the semantic information in time series, which further reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of representation learning of streaming time series. this study introduces an unsupervised method tailored for streaming time series, considering semantic information. Specifically, it integrates recursive covariance estimation into a simplified transformer structure, PoolFormer, to enhance efficiency and reveal real-time semantic information. In addition, a novel unsupervised method is designed to learning the representation of streaming time series. the experiments show that this method outperforms other representation methods. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

the paper deals with the problem of counteracting parasitic layout elements in precise analog circuits, in particular, precision voltage references and high-bit DACs and ADCs. We described the two main methods of countering them - minimization and compensation ones. On the example of a 14-bit 1 GHz DAC with embedded Bandgap voltage reference, we evaluated the effect of parasitic resistances on the device performance and its static characteristics. We showed that parasitic resistances could increase the TC of the Bandgap voltage reference source by more than 4 times, from 4 ppm/C to 17.3 ppm/C. this impact was assessed as critical for studied 14-bit DAC functioning. With the compensation method of countering the parasitic resistances, we were able to reduce the TC of the reference to 4.8 ppm/C. We concluded that dealing with parasitic elements is mandatory for precision Bandgap voltage references and high-bit DACs, and the compensation method is effective for this task. © 2023 IEEE.

Nowadays, it is imperative to continually explore and improve antenna manufacturing technologies to meet the growing demands of the market. By leveraging the benefits of numerical methods, researchers can push the boundaries of antenna engineering, creating novel and highly effective antenna designs. In this paper, two approaches to effectively model and design sparse wire grid antennas are proposed. their main idea is to create an optimal wire structure that closely matches the current paths in the antenna while maintaining its integrity with minimal mass. In additions, this structure can be used in further simulations with less resources and controlled characteristic accuracy. A parabolic reflector antenna was used to explain the algorithms of the proposed approaches. Measured and calculated results for equivalent wire-grid structure of this antenna were used for verification. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the algorithms, their results were compared with those for other approaches proposed in earlier work. the proposed approaches showed better advantages than others, and the optimal one is revealed. Recommendations on their use with the future prospects are briefly summarized. © 2023 IEEE.
