Design of Experiments (DoE) is essential for data-driven models. It is applied to create uniformly distributed designs for the model’s input space. For good uniformity, the point density of the generated design shall be kept roughly constant, i.e., too close points and too big data holes shall be avoided. the generation of space-filling designs, even for the unconstrained design space, is challenging, especially with increasing dimensionality and design size. these difficulties increase in the presence of constraints that occurs in many engineering applications. Equality constraints are one group, i.e., mixture or volume constraints. Specialized approaches are required for such constraints. A point-distance-based optimization is not suitable. the computational effort for large designs is too high, and for higher-dimensional designs, too many points are placed close to the boundary of the design space. the proposed approach, instead, is based on the projection of uniformly distributed designs onto the constraint. thus, this work presents the idea of using maximin Latin Hypercubes (LH) with their good space-filling properties and projecting them onto the constraint. the resulting design might be non-uniformly distributed so that large data holes could occur. To fill these holes, this projection of an LH onto the constraint is repeated for the remaining inputs by going over all inputs. this method is analyzed in a first two-dimensional case study. In a second case study, it is applied to a nonlinear constraint. A design has to be placed on a spherical surface. the results are compared to an existing state-of-the-art method. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

this work presents the development of an asynchronous dwell-free virtual keyboard application which can be operated using electrooculographic (EOG) data. Unlike other EOG based eye typing applications, the developed system avoids the use of dwell-times and relieves the user from the need to perform repetitive and unnatural eye movements to move a cursor towards the desired letter or the need to perform voluntary blinks to interact with the application. Instead, the proposed application requires the user to simply glance through the vicinity of the desired letters, as one would swipe through letters when typing on a touchscreen device, after which a set of word predictions are displayed for the user to select. the proposed application obtained a top five rate of 76.00 ± 12.61% using EOG data which is comparable to the top five rate of 79.00 ± 13.37% obtained when operating the application using a vision-based eye gaze tracker. © 2022, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

this paper studies the discovery of approximate rules in property graphs. First, we propose a semantically meaningful measure of error for mining graph entity dependencies (GEDs) that almost hold, to tolerate errors and inconsistencies that exist in real-world graphs. Second, we present a new characterisation of GED satisfaction, and devise a depth-first search strategy to traverse the search space of candidate GEDs efficiently. Further, we perform experiments to demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of our solution, FastAGEDs, with three real-world graphs. the results show FastAGEDs is effective and efficient for mining approximate GEDs in noisy and erroneous real-world graphs. © 2023, the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In recent years, personal health data can be collected via wearable devices and sensors and used for healthcare services improvement through data sharing. To share sensitive personal health data securely, many frameworks and approaches using blockchain-based systems have been proposed. However, the issue of letting individuals control and manage their data with privacy-preserving is still to be solved. In this paper, we propose a new model of Individual-Initiated Auditable Access control (IIAAC) enabled with blockchain, CP-ABE (Ciphertext-Policy Attribute-Based Encryption) and IPFS (Inter-Planetary File System) for privacy-preserved data sharing. We describe the system architecture, its main components for our proposed model, and the protocols to make blockchain and IPFS interoperate with each other via a client application, including key generation, data publication, and data retrieval. We further build an experiment environment to evaluate the performance of our proposed model and architecture. Experiment results demonstrate the feasibility of our proposed model and system architecture for privacy-preserved data sharing.

A web application without access control is hardly usable. At the same time, we want to avoid boilerplate and use frameworks automating the communication between applications and databases. However, if we use the full potential of the mapper frameworks, the possibilities for access control are getting limited. Consequently, a trade-off between code complexity and mapper functionality must be found. In this work, we use object-graph mapper and at the same time avoid code duplication and entity-type-specific access control implementations. We do so by intercepting and changing the communication between our application code and the mapper framework so it generates queries already containing access-control filters. thereby, we achieve authorization already on database access. With this approach only entities authorized for the currently active user are loaded, reducing the risk of data leaks. Furthermore, the developers are not required to implement access control on a per-entity-type basis.

A cloud computing system that receives complex user tasks involving several subtasks is studied from the point of view of the response time. In order to reduce the service time, the tasks are divided into smaller components and processed in parallel. As a cloud center model we use a fork-join queuing system with Pareto distribution of the service time on the servers. To analyze the mean response time and its standard deviation, a new approach is used combining simulation modeling with one of the machine learning methods. the estimates obtained are much more accurate than the earlier analytical results on fork-join systems. © 2022, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Battery integration with photovoltaic (PV) systems is essential for mitigating their intermittency effects due to the dependency of their output power on weather conditions. the single-stage PV structure can achieve higher efficiency, lower cost, and reduced number of components among existing structures. However, control complexity increases with single-stage PV systems in the case of integrating battery storage systems. the situation becomes more complicated with the weak grid conditions and the required multi-functionalities of PV systems with electrical grids. therefore, this Paper introduces an enhanced control algorithm utilizing the model predictive control (MPC) approach for single-stage hybrid PV-battery systems. the proposed method can rapidly respond to the transients and variations of load, PV output power, and grid requirements. the simulation results show the enhanced transient response, steady-state response, mitigating week grid effects, and satisfying load and grid requirements.

It is important to use a reliable maximum power point tracking (MPPT) approach to guarantee that wind production systems are fully beneficial. this paper is discussing the operation principle of adaptive fuzzy logic controllers (AFLC) in double fed induction generator wind turbine. the acquired findings attest to AFLC’s superiority over traditional PI control systems. the adaptive fuzzy logic controller has more promising results as compared to old PI controller. the investigation has been done by using MATLAB/SIMULINK 2023a package. the proposed controller has less rising time than conventional PI controller by more the 40% and better power tracking by 32.21%. the results of using adaptive fuzzy logic controller revealed fast time response, high rate of convergence, minimal steady state error, and less overshoot compared to those achieved with conventional PI. these indicators are used to show that AFLC is feasible when compared to other controllers with the same WPP.

Facial expression recognition (FER) is an important task in computer vision, having practical applications in areas such as human-computer interaction, education, healthcare, and online monitoring. Although significant progress has been made possible by deep learning, real-world deployment of the FER system still needs to be improved, particularly with limited resources such as embedded or mobile systems. From this challenging FER task, we propose a lightweight network that combines a lightweight high performance backbone by applying ZenNAS [1] and a distillation feature part after backbone to refine features. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ZenNet-SA achieves state-of-the-art results on three FER benchmark datasets, RAF-DB (88.53%) as well as AffectNet 7 class (65.23%) and 8 class (61.32%) in the light-weight models group with a model size less than 1M and computation costs approximately 450M Flops. Our results demonstrate a notable improvement in efficiency, with a decrease of approximately 97% in FLOPS and 91% in the number of parameters compared to POSTER V2 in terms of computational and resource costs.

Technologies have changed how students engage and participate during remote classes, whether by encouraging interaction via chat on platforms such as Google Meet or by using voting features such as Poll. Our research aims to better understand the role of these tools in the educational context and how their interactive features influence student experience through the lens of engagement, participation, and liveness. In this sense, we address the following question: How can educational technologies be classified by the Engagement, Participation, and Liveness lens? To explore the relationship between the lens and the interactive features of Mentimeter, Google Meet, and Google Presentations, we conducted a study with three independent evaluations, measuring agreement using Cohen's Kappa coefficient. Our results suggest that these interactive features can be used as a lens to understand different types of experiences and how they can be applied to promote various dynamics, such as competitive and collaborative activities. Our results expand the professor's perspective on the student experience, providing ways for professors to understand the emotional and student behavioral reactions from using interactive tools in remote learning environments.
