Without the isolation abstractions of operating systems, low-level embedded systems are especially vulnerable to attacks that exploit flaws in either software or hardware to gain control of program behavior. Runtime monitors at the hardware level have shown promise towards by identifying malicious instructions and enforcing programmer-defined policy at runtime. However, the efficiency of monitors comes at the cost of ease of implementation, as policies for ensuring the safe execution of software must be defined at the hardware level. To bridge the abstraction gap, high-level security policy languages have been defined with the ability to be synthesized into hardware monitors, but are limited by semantics that only define policies whose behavior remains static throughout a program’s execution, which limits the practical use *** this paper, we enable dynamically reconfigurable security policies through a high-level language named DAGGER. Alongside static policies, DAGGER’s semantics support policies that dynamically change behavior in response to expert-defined conditions at runtime. Additionally, we introduce a Verilog compiler to support realizing policies as hardware monitors. DAGGERis developed using the Coq proof assistant, enabling the formal verification of policy correctness and other properties. this approach takes advantage of the abstractions and expressiveness of a higher-level language while minimizing the overhead that comes with other general-purpose approaches implemented purely in hardware, as well as offering the groundwork for a formally verified tool chain.

this article presents the results of selecting, justifying, and optimizing the cross section parameters for a modal filter (MF) with single modal redundancy (MR). this filter is employed for protecting circuits from interfering ultrashort pulses (UPS) in differential and common mode. the results demonstrate that the attenuation coefficient in the differential and common modes depends on the width of the active conductor and the distance between the structures. As a result, we present their optimal values. It is shown that the location of primary (reserved) and secondary (reserving) conductors in a four-wire MF has a significant impact. the smallest voltage value at the MF output is observed when EMF sources are connected to the most remote conductors both in differential and in common mode for four types of pulses. Insertion loss values in differential mode were minus 5.19, 11.57, 5.26, and 5.22 dB, while in common mode - minus 5.45, 11.7, 5.65, and 5.65 dB for trapezoidal, digitized, unipolar and bipolar action, respectively. Switching to closer pairs of conductors degrades insertion loss levels by 0.57-0.76 dB for common mode, and 0.61-0.82 dB for differential modes, depending on the selected lines.

Digital Holographic Microscopy (DHM) can obtain a 3D profile of a micro-object. However, the obtained 3D profile includes the noise. One reason for this is the problem of the extraction method of phase information in DHM. Conventional methods cannot extract only the phase information from the Fourier domain, and noise components are included. To solve this problem, we propose a use of the Kalman filter in DHM systems. In this method, multiple frequency components are obtained from the Fourier domain as time-series data for Kalman filtering. 3D profiles are obtained from each frequency component and stored in an array as time-series data. this is used to remove randomly generated noise. In this process, it remains unclear how many 3D profiles obtained from frequency components are needed as time-series data. therefore, the optimization of the number of windowed sidebands in the Fourier domain is the objective in this paper. the objective is to use the Kalman filter efficiently by performing quantitative evaluation using image quality metrics and optimization based on processing time.

From gimmicky IoT devices to self-driving cars, cyber-physical systems have become increasingly accessible to the masses. As these systems interact intimately with the physical world, failures in the systems can lead to severe, potentially life-threatening damage. Classical cyber-physical systems, such as aircraft flight control, employ dedicated redundancies for fault tolerance. However, a more flexible and cost-effective approach to redundancy is needed as cyber-physical systems become more versatile and expand to the consumer market. In this work, we explore the synthesis of redundancies for program functionalities with neural network models. the models are trained with the data from normal program executions and will be deployed to supplant the original program functionalities when failures occur. We have tested the prototype on representative cyber-physical systems, including ArduPilot and OpenPilot. the evaluation results indicate that the approach can synthesize redundancy models for both numerical and logical programs. We also demonstrate that the redundancy models can effectively avoid bugs and security vulnerabilities in the original programs.

As the prevalence of sophisticated network attacks continues to rise, enhancing conventional intrusion detection systems (IDS) methods presents a significant challenge. Machine learning (ML)-based anomaly detection and cybersecurity analytics have been widely used in research and development projects related to network IDS. this study explores a set of classifiers on specific domain is a cybersecurity. A significant aspect of this study involves data preparation, including a selection of important features to enhance detection accuracy. Additionally, the study introduces the Synthetic Minority Over-sampling Technique (SMOTE) to address the challenge of classifying imbalanced data. the primary aim of this study is to evaluate various classifiers, such as Random Forest (RF), Decision Tree (DT), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and Multi-layer perceptron (MLP) neural network. the experiments involve different feature groups distributed at percentages of 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%. the evaluation is conducted from the perspectives of evaluation measurements, time consumption, and space utilization. the experimental findings highlight that RF outperforms the other classifiers, achieving an accuracy of 0.96778, precision of 0.73007, recall of 0.74087, F1 score of 0.73184, and G-mean of 0.22136.

Hearing is an important sense of coexistence, but most people take it for granted unless it is weakened or lost. Blindness prevents a person from gaining knowledge of the surrounding environment and makes unassisted navigation, object recognition, obstacle avoidance, and reading tasks major challenges. Our work proposes an Assistive Intelligent Hearing and Visual Aid System that supports hearing-impaired and blind patients and allows them to live a normal life. the patients will be required to wear smart glasses equipped with bone conduction technology and wirelessly connected with an application running on the patient’s smartphone. the system uses bone conduction earphones for text-to-speech conversion and a Raspberry Pi 4B with a camera module for facial recognition and uses an OpenCV model. Changes in the sense of touch that facilitate interaction with the environment. When the system detects the presence of a human, it searches its database for a potential match. If the facial recognition criterion of at least 80 degrees is met, the user can hear the name of the recognized person through the bone-conduction earphones. the proposed assistive device is an intelligent, low-cost, reliable, and portable solution.

Digital holographic microscopy (DHM) is used in the fields of microbiological research and disease diagnosis. Especially in the medical field, it is required to obtain the precise shape information of red blood cells and living cells for disease diagnosis. To obtain the highly accurate three-dimensional profile of an object, it is necessary to set parameters accurately on the system and perform the analysis. In DHM, it is especially important to set the refractive index of the medium surrounding the object accurately. However, the refractive index varies depending on the temperature and the humidity of the experimental environment, as well as on the sample preparation method, and it is difficult to derive the appropriate refractive index. this is a problem in the medical field, which requires the accurate three-dimensional information. therefore, in this paper, we propose a method to derive the optimum refractive index and to obtain the accurate height information of red blood cells by conducting experiments using two types of lasers with different wavelengths and comparing the height information of red blood cells obtained with each laser. By using the proposed method, the optimu m refractive index of the surrounding medium and the accurate height information of the red blood cells are obtained.

Among several new module concepts and cell architectures, shingled solar cell interconnection is a promising technology to realize increased power output (higher power densities) by increased active cell area and low electrical losses. the direct interconnection by a slight overlapping of solar cells, using electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) asjoint material, requires a sound understanding of the loads the ECA joint faces during module lifetime. the ECA joint not only has to enable electric conductivity but at the same time needs to compensate different mechanical responses of the materials in the module laminate due to varying external stresses induced by variations of temperature and mechanical loads deflecting the module, e.g. wind or snow covering the modules. Especially thermal effects on the structure of solar panels are significant and complicated due to differing coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) of the materials in use. However, the influence of anisotropic and also possibly negative coefficients of thermal expansion on thermomechanical stresses in string of shingled solar cells has not yet been investigated. therefore, the current work aims for a more realistic representation of the thermomechanical behavior of photovoltaic (PV) modules by considering the anisotropy of the CTE of polymer films.

In this paper, we propose an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) for people with disabilities. Our first prototype is a facial landmark and pose estimation system coupled with a drive-by-wire hardware. this is a Ford Fusion Plugin Hybrid research vehicle, and drive-by-wire conversion is done by Dataspeed, Rochester Hills MI. Our early prototypes were based on open-loop control, but later we have developed a facial landmark detection based Artificial Intelligence (AI) system controlling the steering column using the drive-by-wire feature of the vehicle. With the help of this system, people with disabilities are expected to drive motor vehicles with increased comfort and safety. In future versions of the system, we are planning to add more automation and assistance features for other use cases. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2022.

Multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) offers prospects of efficient control in large distributed systems such as complex energy grids. the development of MARL algorithms is hampered by a scarcity of realistic benchmarks. In this paper, we introduce EnEnv 1.0 --- a simulation benchmark for MARL in modern energy grids. EnEnv 1.0 is a set of environments in which the energy grids are simulated with uncontrollable renewable energy sources, fossil fuel generators, and consumers. the role of learning agents is to control and coordinate batteries in a distributed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) based on readouts such as weather forecasts and load demand forecasts. the energy grids in EnEnv 1.0 are based on standard test systems of different topological structures. these include the modified standard IEEE 33, Illinois 200, and PEGASE 89 bus systems. these networks are adjusted to serve as the MARL benchmark by introducing real weather observations, demand data for European locations, and software interfaces that enable coupling with a number of existing implementations of MARL algorithms, as well as single-agent reinforcement learning (SARL) algorithms. In the experimental study, we verify the performance of a catalog of MARL and SARL methods on EnEnv 1.0.
