the use of the multiscale generalized radial basis function (MSRBF) network for image feature extraction is proposed for the first time. the MSRBF network holds a simple but flexible structure capable to modelling complex systems. However MSRBF is originally designed to identify observational-type input-output systems. We aim to use this efficient network to get to concise but accurate models of digital images thanks to: a) the use of multiple scales in the RBF kernel width, and b) the adoption of the forward regression orthogonal least squares (FROLS) algorithm to refine the model structure selection. thereafter the new tailored model is excited to produce output signals aimed at be compressed by the discrete cosine transform (DCT), adopted in this work to compact signals' energy into a few coefficients. To recognise images as MSRBF networks, a mathematical modelling was done by considering the first ones as multiple-input single-output systems. Based on the new methodology a novel computer aided diagnosis (CAD) system for cancer detection in X-ray mammograms was designed. Classification results show that the new CAD method helped reach a competitive diagnostic accuracy of 93.5%. It was similarly found that the MSRBF network is able to construct tailored and precise image models.

Specification decomposition is a theoretically interesting and practically relevant problem for which two approaches were independently developed by the control theory and verification communities: natural projection and partial model checking. In this paper we show that, under reasonable assumptions, natural projection reduces to partial model checking and, when cast in a common setting, the two are equivalent. Aside from their theoretical interest, our results build a bridge whereby the control theory community can reuse algorithms and results developed by the verification community. In addition, we present an algorithm and a tool for the partial model checking of finite-state automata that can be used as an alternative to natural projection.

We evaluate several approaches to classification of loan applications that provide their final results in the form of a single decision tree, i.e., in the form widely regarded as interpretable by humans. We apply state-of-the-art credit scoring-oriented classification algorithms, such as logistic regression, gradient boosting decision trees and random forests, as components of the proposed algorithms of decision tree building. We use four real-world loan default prediction data sets of different sizes. We evaluate the proposed methods using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) but we also measure the models' interpretability. We verify the significance of differences between AUC values observed when using the compared techniques by measuring Friedman's statistic and performing Nemenyi's post-hoc test.

the cancer and the cancer mortality may seem the sign of the present times. this leads hundreds of scientists to handle the issue of finding significant premises of cancer occurrence. In this paper a set of data mining tasks is defined that joins the observed genes mutation with the specific cancer type observation. Due to the high computational complexity of this kind of data a Hadoop ecosystem cluster was developed to perform the required calculations. the results may be satisfactory in the domains of distributed data storage (processing) and the genes mutation occurrence interpretation.

State-of-the-art (semi-)decision procedures for non-linear real arithmetic address polynomial inequalities by mean of symbolic methods, such as quantifier elimination, or numerical approaches such as interval arithmetic. Although (some of) these methods offer nice completeness properties, their high complexity remains a limit, despite the impressive efficiency of modern implementations. this appears to be an obstacle to the use of SMT solvers when verifying, for instance, functional properties of control-command programs. Using off-the-shelf convex optimization solvers is known to constitute an appealing alternative. However, these solvers only deliver approximate solutions, which means they do not readily provide the soundness expected for applications such as software verification. We thus investigate a-posteriori validation methods and their integration in the SMT framework. Although our early prototype, implemented in the Alt-Ergo SMT solver, often does not prove competitive with state of the art solvers, it already gives some interesting results, particularly on control-command programs.

We consider tools for developing information systems with use of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) and Linked Open Data technologies (LOD). the original idea of LOD is to allow the software designers to develop program systems integrated by means of common ontologies and web protocols. MDA Platform Independent Model (PIM) is expressed as set of UML diagrams. PIM forms a LOD graph and its namespace. All the PIM entities are defined as ontology resources, i.e. with URI references to LOD terms. this allows us to translate PIM UML model to a set of triples and store them in an ontology ware-house for further transformation into a Platform Specific Model (PSM). the ClioPatria ontology server and the SWI Prolog language are used as tools of PIM and PSM storage, querying and processing. the tools will allow us to mediate the MDA static means of code generation and configuration at development stage with the techniques of flexible data structure processing at run time, thus, producing even more productive information system development and maintenance techniques. this research corresponds to nowadays direction of Semantic Web Software Engineering.

Although illiteracy has been in constant decline over the last decades, there are too many reports about people having problems to identify the main ideas contained in texts they read. Reading comprehension is essential for students, because it is a predictor of their academic or professional success. Researchers have developed computer supported learning activities for supporting students develop their reading comprehension skills with varying degrees of success. One of the various advantages of having students work on electronic documents is that computers can help teachers monitor students' work. One of the problems of these systems is poor usability due to sophisticated human-computer interaction paradigms emulating activities students perform in traditional learning activities for improving reading comprehension with pen and paper. In this paper we report on a research which implements a learning activity based on answers with multiple choice similar to a questionnaire, which is easy to implement in computers and easy to interact with. Although multiple choice questionnaires are associated to summative evaluations, the implemented learning activity uses them within a collaborative learning activity in which students have to justify, first individually then collaboratively, their choice with a short text. the developed system was used and evaluated in a real learning situation;one of the most interesting findings is not only that students who have to justify their option with a text perform better than those who have not, but that the pertinence of the text to the question does not play a major role. this suggests that just asking the students to justify their answers requires them to do a thinking process which otherwise they would not do.
