the Spartanizer is an eclipse plugin featuring over one hundred and fifty refactoring techniques, all aimed at reducing various size complexity of the code, without changing its design, i.e., inheritance relations, modular structure, etc. Typical use case of the Spartanizer is in an automatic mode: refactoring operations are successively selected and applied by the tool, until the code is reshaped in spartan style (a frugal coding style minimizing the use of characters, variables, tokens, etc.). the Spartanizer demonstrates the potential of automatic refactoring: tens of thousands of transformations are applied in matter of seconds, chains of dependent applications of transformations with tens of operations in them, significant impact on code size, and extent reaching almost every line of code, even of professional libraries.

In real-time control systems, a well-known problem is the period assignment to individual tasks, in order to minimize the overall control cost while guaranteeing the task deadlines. In general, the control cost decreases in convex fashion with decreasing periods (increasing invocation rates). Many real-time control systems are increasingly implemented on multiprocessor platforms due to the increased performance requirements. In this paper, we consider the optimal period assignment problem on a homogeneous multiprocessor platform. the problem is intractable in nature. We analyze the performance of the approaches that first partition the tasks, before assigning periods to optimize overall cost on each CPU locally. then we propose a technique which assigns the periods optimally by reducing the problem to a single-processor problem setting in the first step, and then applying the partitioning algorithms in the second step. Our experimental evaluation shows that the two variants of our proposed technique offer significant advantage, and exhibit a performance close to the theoretical bound achievable by any algorithm.

Refining a sociotechnical system (STS) specification with respect to its requirements is a nontrivial task. Previous work on verification and refinement of software systems either ignores the social dimension, or limits the autonomy of agents by controlling their interactions. We address these limitations by proposing an STS specification that provides not only regimentation via control mechanisms that describe how agents interact with software components, but also regulation via norms that characterize the expectations of agents from each other. We use formal verification techniques to understand whether an STS specification meets the functional, security, and privacy requirements of its stakeholders. If a requirement is not satisfied, we suggests refinements based on normative design patterns.

A large body of research in recommender systems focuses on optimizing prediction and ranking. However, recent work has highlighted the importance of other aspects of the recommendations, including transparency, control and user experience in general. Building on these aspects, we introduce MoodPlay, a hybrid recommender system music which integrates content and mood-based filtering in an interactive interface. We show how MoodPlay allows the user to explore a music collection by latent affective dimensions, and we explain how to integrate user input at recommendation time with predictions based on a pre-existing user profile. Results of a user study (N=240) are discussed, with four conditions being evaluated with varying degrees of visualization, interaction and control. Results show that visualization and interaction in a latent space improve acceptance and understanding of both metadata and item recommendations. However, too much of either can result in cognitive overload and a negative impact on user experience. © 2016 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). Publication rights licensed to ACM.

this paper deals with thermal management of a multicore processor executing multiple stochastic real-time job streams. the main objective is to reduce the chip-wide temperature gradient to decelerate processor aging, and the subordinate goal is to decrease the hotspot temperature. A pair of active and passive cores is dedicated to each stream, which the active one services the corresponding real-time jobs. In order to reduce the chip-wide temperature gradient between cores, the active and passive cores of an individual stream are replaced at appropriate times through job migration. the thermal management of this system is a specific stochastic control problem. Regarding the inter-effects of core temperatures and the stochastic nature of the system, systematic achievement of the objective needs an appropriate method. the control theory of Markov jump linear system (MJLS) has been used to design the desired thermal controller and analytically study its stability. the efficacy of the proposed approach in terms of the thermal management objectives is investigated through simulation experiments.

Due to flow dynamics, a software defined network (SDN) may need to frequently update its data plane so as to optimize various performance objectives, such as load balancing. Most previous solutions first determine a new route configuration based on the current flow status, and then update the forwarding paths of existing flows. However, due to slow update operations of Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM) based flow tables, unacceptable update delays may occur, especially in a large or frequently changed network. According to recent studies, most flows have short duration and the workload of the entire network may vary after a long duration. As a result, the new route configuration may be no longer efficient for the workload after the update, if the update duration takes too long. In this paper, we address the real-time route update, which jointly considers the optimization of flow route selection in the control plane and update scheduling in the data plane. We formulate the delay-satisfied route update (DSRU) problem, and prove its NP-Hardness. Two algorithms with bounded approximation factors are designed to solve this problem. We implement the proposed methods on our SDN testbed. the experimental results and extensive simulation results show that our method can reduce the route update delay by about 60% compared with previous route update methods while preserving a similar routing performance (with link load ratio increased less than 3%).

the Internet has evolved greatly in this decade. For economic benefits, the management of Internet networks needs to adapt to mass changes without huge modifications in hardware and software. Especially in campus networks, there are a variety of users and devices with different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements and management policies. Software-defined networking (SDN) decouples the data and control planes. the separated control plan resides on a centralized controller to make networks easier to manage. In this paper, a role-based SDN campus network slicing is proposed by utilizing an authentication controller and the virtualization technology of FlowVisor to divide the campus network into several virtual networks according to the types of users. However, the mapping between the devices' MAC addresses and the users' roles results in a heavy loading problem on FlowVisor. therefore, a VLAN-based slicing is introduced in this framework to offload the workload of FlowVisor for classifying packets into corresponding slices. Packets are appended with VLAN tags for recognizing types of users to lower the overhead of FlowVisor. Analyses of experimental results show that compared with MAC-based slicing, VLAN-based slicing can reduce the flow setup latency by 14% to 60% depending on the number of devices.

the scaling of semiconductor technologies is leading to processors with increasing numbers of cores. A key enabler in manycore systems is the use of Networks-on-Chip (NoC) as a global communication mechanism. the adoption of NoCs in manycore systems requires a shift in focus from computation to communication, as communication is fast becoming the dominant factor in processor performance. Many researchers have focused on direct communication between cores in the NoC, however in a manycore processor the communication is actually between the cores and the memory hierarchy. In this work, we investigate the memory communication traffic of shared threads in a hierarchical cache architecture. We argue that the performance scalability for shared-memory applications in a hierarchical cache architecture for systems with thousands of processor cores depends on the distance between threads sharing memory in terms of the cache hierarchy (the "memory distance"). We present latency and throughput results comparing fat quadtree, concentrated mesh and mesh topologies as a function of the "memory distance" between the threads. Our results using the ITRS physical data for 2023 show that the model of thread placement and the distance of placing them significantly affects the NoC performance, and that scale-invariant topologies perform better than flat topologies.

Powerline communication (PLC) provides inexpensive, secure and high speed network connectivity, by leveraging the existing power distribution networks inside the buildings. While PLC technology has the potential to improve connectivity and is considered a key enabler for sensing, control, and automation applications in enterprises, it has been mainly deployed for improving connectivity in homes. Deploying PLCs in enterprises is more challenging since the power distribution network is more complex as compared to homes. Moreover, existing PLC technologies such as HomePlug AV have not been designed for and evaluated in enterprise deployments. To this end, we give guidlines for designing PLC networks for providing ubiquitous connectivity in enterprises, based on measurement study of PLC performance in enterprise settings using commodity HomePlug AV PLC devices. Based on our findings, we propose that careful planning of PLC network topology, routing and spectrum sharing can significantly boost performance of enterprise PLC networks.

Inspired by the success of use of Virtual Machines (VMs) in cloud computing, virtualization has been introduced to wireless networking recently, enabling support for multiple Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) via isolated slices over a shared wireless substrate. In this paper, we present design, implementation and evaluation of a novel cloud framework, R-Cloud, to enable radio resources at Base Stations (BSs) to be effectively allocated to multiple MVNOs as a service, which is referred to as Radio-as-a-Service (RaaS). R-Cloud employs a hybrid two-level control framework to enable coarse-grained and fine-grained resource allocation at the cloud and BS levels respectively. Specifically, R-Cloud not only coordinates resource allocation among BSs, MVNOs and mobile users across a Radio Access Network (RAN) and enables performance isolation by optimizing resource sharing and user association using an LP-rounding based algorithm at the cloud level; but also effectively schedule transmissions among multiple users at a BS using an optimal scheduling policy. We implemented R-Cloud over a wireless network testbed with software defined radios. It has been shown by extensive experimental and simulation results that R-Cloud can achieve effective RaaS over wireless networks and the proposed resource allocation algorithms outperform widely-used baseline solutions.
