the modern use of communication, the information they contain and their protection at all stages (creation, storage, sending and receiving) have resulted in infrastructures that exponentially grow year by year and that must be accurately protected if we want to communicate with our interlocutors without others interfering (on purpose or unintentionally), intercepting, modifying or damaging our communication fraudulently. Today most of the information flowing over the Internet is transported over large-scale distributed systems by the secure version of the HTTP protocol (the HTTPS protocol). the use of Cryptography within the HTTPS protocol provides a fair level of security that makes users sleep peacefully and, even worse/better (depending on the point-of-view), trust the entire communication flow passing through the large-distributed systems. the paper shows how it is possible to analyze web applications that use the TLS protocol for protecting the communications, with the main purpose of doing reverse engineering on it and try to do a kind of Vulnerability Assessmentaimed at improving the security of such web applications. Authors discovered serious flaws in several large-scale distributed systems/applications: those flaws were exploited for reading and modifying messages sent over a secure HTTPS communication channel or, on the other side, that can be used for understanding the inner functioning of a given application. Authors show that it is quite common to see login/passwords in clear-text going back and forth over the network. Last but not least, the proposed approach undermines the basis of the mutual trust between institutions when such trust is based on the principle of the federated identity within institutions. © 2023 IEEE.

New intelligent solutions for assisted autonomy based on emerging technologies that enable proactive and preventive approaches to maintain an active and healthy life for the older adults are a great challenge. Research has suggested that the success of innovative software applications relies on the user satisfaction and emphasized the importance of evaluating a variety of quality factors of those applications. With the increase in interest and the adoption of health-related applications, more studies are needed to examine older adults' attitude regarding to usage, satisfaction and perceived benefits. the purpose of this research is to investigate the quality factors of health-related applications which lead to increased satisfaction of older adults. this research was conducted in a specific context of the European vINCI project on a sample of 60 older patients in Romania. Multiple linear regression revealed that the satisfaction of older patients was significantly and positive associated with usefulness, information quality, and system quality. the findings are used by the application developers to evaluate and improve health applications. © 2023 IEEE.

Drones as a particular case of robots were recently regulated by the EU as a guideline for all member states, raising several barriers in the use of drones in industrial applications for the future. Because of safety risks and privacy concerns, from the legal point of view, drones have now a limited applicability outside the visual line of sight of the human pilot therefore a limited economical applicability to some areas accessible by the pilot and outside urban areas. In this paper, we identify the key paths autonomous drone technology should progress towards, to establish a strong basis for a future certification of operating at human tolerable safety risks, and we explore the existing options to simulate in 3D environments the behavior of drones and use simulator rendered data to capture sensor data and images for constructing a set of training and validation data. Moreover, we report on the abilities of simulators to integrate software and hardware in the loop autopilots of drones, explore ways of using custom network architectures on drones, and test the ability of low power computing chips to run custom design neural network architectures. We explore the existing options to simulate in 3D environments the behavior of drones and use simulator rendered data to capture sensor data and images for constructing a set of training and validation data. We also test the abilities of simulators to integrate software and hardware in the loop autopilots of drones and possibility to integrate well known programming languages. To further explore the possibility of using custom network architectures on drones, we test the ability of low power computing chips to run custom design neural network architectures, and we identify some of the challenges ahead. © 2023 IEEE.

the image classification task is considered solved from the technical perspective: given enough data - in terms of quantity, quality and distribution - machine learning technology is able to classify various medical conditions with high performance metrics. Yet, one disadvantage is that the large majority of approaches directly target to signal the disease without considering at all the running protocols or medical guidelines used by clinicians. We address here the gap between running clinical protocols and solutions provided by computer scientists. Instead of directly target the disease, we aim the identify only the biomarkers that the physicians are looking for. We apply this approach to the age-related macular degeneration (AMD). the task is to identify biomarkers for the AMD condition by segmenting retinal optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. One relevant question regards the choice between feature based techniques versus deep learning methods. We address this question by providing a hybrid original solution that combines deep learning based retinal layer segmentation with feature based image classification used to distinguish between a particular fluid area and its neighbouring retinal areas. In this context we perform a comparative analysis of various semantic segmentation techniques which provide noticeable results for retinal layer segmentation. On the other hand, due to the low representation of some fluids in the considered benchmark dataset, we address and enhance their recognition by texture based region of interest classification. the proposed approach is a step towards developing AI systems in line with running medical protocols. © 2023 IEEE.

Nowadays, neurological diseases represent a medical emergency for which new prevention, monitoring and adequate treatment solutions are needed. ALAMEDA project proposes a monitoring solution for patients with Parkinson's disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Stroke, using multiple sensors and specific applications to collect information on the condition of health and aspects of lifestyle, activity level, sociability and mood. the paper describes the ALAMEDA infrastructure architecture and all processes to support the dedicated AI toolkit, along with all relevant concepts, components and interactions. Data collection methods are central to the objectives of the ALAMEDA project, as they are responsible for the acquisition of all data necessary for patient monitoring and evaluation during the pilot period. In this sense, the data flow for the data collection service for smart bracelets and smart insoles is presented, as well as how users interact with these devices. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper deals with the design of static output feedback (SOF) H-infinity controller for discrete-time singular systems. the design procedure of the SOF H-infinity controller without structure constraints is first proposed and then extended to the case with structure constraints where certain elements of the control gain matrix are zero. the proposed approach can provide less conservative results compared to existing methods. Numerical examples of SOF H-infinity controllers both with and without structure constraints are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Humans have adapted to a light environment with natural light in the course of evolution. A novel light environment control system is needed to address the problems of inadequate adaptation to the modern artificial light environment. For a long time, only cone and rod cells were thought to be photoreceptors in the retina (i.e. light sensors in human), but a new photoreceptor was discovered around 2000. these photoreceptors are called melanopsin ganglion cells (ipRGCs: intrinsically photoreceptive retinal ganglion cells). However, at present, the understanding of the functions of melanopsin cells is extremely limited and little is known. For example, many people are getting more sunlight in the morning to improve their sleep quality, wearing blue light-cutting glasses or using the Night Shift function in iOS, suggesting that it is important to activate or inhibit melanopsin cells depending on the light environment, but it is necessary to understand the function of melanopsin cells in order to make appropriate decisions on when to activate or inhibit melanopsin cells. Melanopsin cells have a slower response than cones. they receive signals from classical photoreceptors, indicating that cone and melanopsin signals are integrated at the retina. In the present study, we measured the intrinsic phase difference between cone and melanopsin signals in the pupillary pathway using a silent-substitution technique. the goal of the present study was to investigate how these signals are temporally integrated. We used three different test stimuli: (i) varying melanopsin stimulation without changing L-, M-, and S-cone stimulation (melanopsin stimulus);(ii) varying L-, M-, and Scone stimulation only, without changing melanopsin stimulation (cone stimulus);and (iii) varying the radiant flux of the stimuli, without changing the spectral composition, which reduces or increases the radiant flux uniformly at all wavelengths (lightflux stimulus). Technological advancement has significantly facilitated the research and development of Artificial Intelligence, with particular emphasis on Natural Language Processing (NLP). High-quality data is crucial to achieving success in this area. this aspect becomes particularly important considering the recent widespread adoption of large language models trained on a considerable amount of text from the Internet. this research expands on the issue of data quality in NLP by examining the impact of automated text extraction techniques from HTML on the performance of specific NLP tasks. For this purpose, an empirical evaluation was conducted to assess the efficacy of various automated techniques for HTML text extraction using 300 news articles written in English, Romanian, and French. the evaluation was conducted by comparing the results of the most popular automated text extraction technologies (i.e., 'boiler', 'justext', 'newspaper', 'readability', and 'trafilatura') against the results of human-validated texts. Both extracted texts, automated and human-validated, were subjected to three NLP tasks: named entity recognition, sentiment analysis, and text summarization. Our analysis of the NLP results indicates that text from Romanian online news articles should be extracted with 'newspaper', whereas 'trafilatura' should be used for English and French articles, regardless of the NLP task. Overall, our study provides a comprehensive understanding of the performance of the selected technologies for extracting the text of online news articles by language and NLP task. © 2023 IEEE.

this paper investigates adaptive event-triggered output feedback global stabilization for a class of nonlinear systems with parametric uncertainties and unknown non-polynomial growth rate of output. Different from existing research, the system nonlinearities possess unmeasurable states dependent growth, while the growth rate is unknown non-polynomial function of the output. To address this issue, we propose an adaptive event-triggered output feedback control scheme. Specifically, we construct a dynamic gain observer to rebuilt the unmeasurable states, whose dynamic gains are introduced to compensate for uncertainties and counteract the unknown non-polynomial growth rate. Subsequently, an adaptive event-triggered output feedback controller based on the gain observer is constructed to achieve global stabilization of the closed-loop system while improving the utilization of resources, in which the time-varying threshold is key to ensure the validity of the event-triggered controller. A simulation example is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.
