With mobile offloading, computation-intensive tasks can be offloaded from mobile devices to the cloud to conserve energy. In principle, the idea is to trade the relatively low communication energy expense for high computation power consumption. In this paper, we propose that computation-intensive tasks can be distributed among nearby mobile devices, and focus on the case that a group of mobile users may collaborate with one another with one common target job. In particular, a user can reduce its own energy consumption by delegating a portion of the job to nearby users in a coalition. We propose distributed collaboration strategies based on game theory, and formulate the problem as a non-transferable utility coalition formation game in which users join or split from coalitions depending on the local preference. the stability of the resulting partition is studied. We show through simulation that the proposed algorithm reduces up to 22% of the average energy costs compared to the non-cooperative case, and the running time scales well as the number of users grows.

Congestion control in networks is a well-studied problem. In this paper, we propose a distributed congestion control scheme for connectionless networks which tries to attain high delivery ratio, possibly at the cost of higher delay. In situations where the entire network is not congested, this scheme attempts to spread the packets headed towards congestion to uncongested areas, where they can be rerouted towards the destination through alternate uncongested paths if available, or held back at uncongested nodes temporarily (parking) until congestion reduces. Detailed simulation results are given to show that the proposed scheme significantly reduces the number of packet drops in many congestion scenarios.

A mobile ad hoc network is a kind of wireless communication network that does not rely on a fixed infrastructure and is lack of any centralized control. these characteristics make it vulnerable to security attack, so protecting the security of the network is essential. Like many distributed systems, security in ad hoc networks widely relies on the use of key management mechanisms. However, traditional key management systems are not appropriate for them. We aim at providing a secure and distributed authentication service in ad hoc networks. We propose a secure public key authentication service based on our trust model and network model to prevent nodes from obtaining false public keys of the others when there are malicious nodes in the network. We perform an overall evaluation of our proposed approach by simulations. the experimental results indicate clear advantages of our approach in providing effective security in mobile ad hoc networks.

Scalable distributed shared-memory architectures rely on coherence controllers on each processing node to synthesize cache-coherent shared memory across the entire machine. the coherence controllers execute coherence protocol handlers that may be hardwired in custom hardware or programmed in a protocol processor within each coherence controller. Although custom hardware runs faster, a protocol processor allows the coherence protocol to be tailored to specific application needs and may shorten hardware development time. Previous research show that the increase in application execution time due to protocol processors over custom hardware is minimal. With the advent of SMP nodes and faster processors and networks, the tradeoff between custom hardware and protocol processors needs to be reexamined. this paper studies the performance of custom-hardware and protocol-processor-based coherence controllers in SMP-node-based CC-NUMA systems on applications from the SPLASH-2 suite. Using realistic parameters and detailed models of existing state-of-the-art system components, it shows that the occupancy of coherence controllers can limit the performance of applications with high communication requirements, where the execution time using protocol processors can be twice as long as using custom hardware. To gain a deeper understanding of the tradeoff, we investigate the effect of varying several architectural parameters that influence the communication characteristics of the applications and the underlying system on coherence controller performance. We identify measures of applications' communication requirements and their impact on the performance penalty of protocol processors, which can help system designers predict performance penalties for other applications. We also study the potential of improving the performance of hardware-based and protocol-processor-based coherence controllers by separating or duplicating critical components.

We study the delay performance of policed traffic to provide real-time guarantees over wireless networks. A number of models have been presented in the literature to describe wireless (radio or optical) networks in terms of the wireless channel and the underlying error control mechanisms. We describe a general framework to incorporate such models into delay guarantee computations for real-time traffic. Static-priority scheduling is considered, and two different admission control mechanisms are used to achieve the trade-off between resource utilization and admission overhead.

the ubiquity of mobile devices creates a rapidly growing market for mobile applications. Many of these applications involve complex processing tasks that are difficult to run on resource constrained mobile devices. this leads to the emergence of mobile cloud computing, in which cloud-based resources are used to enhance the computing capabilities of mobile devices. In this paper, we consider heterogeneous wireless networks in which multiple resource-rich computing nodes can be used as mobile clouds, and mobile devices can upload computation extensive tasks to these mobile clouds. the goal is to minimize the average task response time through determining whether to upload a task, and to which cloud the task should be uploaded. We formalize this task allocation problem, which is proved to be a NP-hard problem, and propose both offline centralized approach and online distributed approach to address this problem. Simulation results show that our approaches outperform others in terms of task response time in various scenarios.

All existing routing protocols of mobile ad hoc networks assume that IP addresses of hosts are already configured before they join the network. Some papers proposed solutions to allow an automatic configuration of nodes, i.e. without human intervention. Unfortunately these processes, often inspired of the traditional wired networks, are not always well adapted to the MANET model and appear relatively resources greedy. Moreover, they apply only to ideal networks in which all nodes can trust each other. In this manner, they do absolutely not consider the security aspects and are thus not adapted to a real use. We propose a node autoconfiguration algorithm which uses the Buddy systems technique to allocate the addresses, as well as a scheme allowing to authenticate the participants inside the network.

We present a novel approach for messaging systems with content-based subscription in mobile ad-hoc networks. Dynamic construction of an event dissemination structure to route events from message producers to consumers is important to support rapidly changing multihop topologies over wireless links. the proposed approach uses summaries of content-based subscriptions to construct an event dissemination structure and Bloom filters are used to summarize subscriptions. We extend ODMRP (on-demand multicast routing protocol) to utilize this context from the middleware tier and construct an optimized dynamic dissemination mesh. ODMRP's mesh topology gives extra reliability compared to the tree structure in unstable mobile ad-hoc network environments.

Energy Management System (EMS) communicates with power plants and substations to maintain the reliability and efficiency of power supplies. EMS collects and monitors data from these sources and controls power flow through commands to ensure uninterrupted power supply, frequency and voltage maintenance, and power recovery in the event of a power outage. EMS works in a distributed Network Protocol (DNP) 3.0-based network environment that is considered secure due to its unique security features and communication methods. However, cyberattacks exploiting the vulnerability of the DNP 3.0 protocol can manipulate the power generation output, resulting in serious consequences such as facility malfunction and power outages. To address this issue, this paper identifies security threats in power system networks, including DNP 3.0, and proposes an AI-based anomaly detection system based on DNP 3.0 network traffic. Existing network traffic target rule-based detection methods and signature-based detection methods have defects. We propose an AI-based anomaly detection system to compensate for defects in existing anomaly detection methods and perform efficient anomaly detection. To evaluate the performance of theAI-based anomaly detection system proposed in this paper, we used a dataset containing normal network traffic and nine types of attack network traffic obtained from the DNP 3.0 communication testbed, and experiments showed 99% accuracy, 98% TPR, and 1.6% FPR, resulting in 99% F-1 score. By implementing these security measures, power system network environments, including EMS, can be better protected against cyber threats.

In this paper, a cross-layer framework to perform spectrum sensing and scheduling in agile wireless networks under resource constraints is presented. A network of secondary users (SUs) opportunistically accesses portions of the spectrum left unused by a network of licensed primary users (PUs). A central controller (CC) schedules the traffic of the SUs over the spectrum bands, based on distributed compressed spectrum sensing performed by the SUs. Both sensing and scheduling are controlled based on the current spectrum occupancy belief, with the goal to maximize the SU throughput, under constraints on the PU throughput degradation and the sensing-transmission cost incurred by the SUs. the high optimization complexity is reduced by proposing a partially myopic scheduling strategy, where the total traffic of the SUs is determined optimally via dynamic programming, whereas the allocation of the resulting total traffic across frequency bands is determined via a myopic maximization of the instantaneous trade-off between PU and SU throughputs, which can be solved efficiently using convex optimization tools. Structural results of the partially myopic scheduling strategy are proved. Simulation results demonstrate how the proposed framework allows to balance optimally the cost of acquisition of state information via distributed spectrum sensing and the cost of data transmission incurred by the SUs, while achieving the best trade-off between PU and SU throughput under the resource constraints available.
