Cloud computing has emerged as a foundation of smart environments by encapsulating and virtualizing the underlying design and implementation details. Concerning the inherent latency and deployment issues, Mobile Edge computing seeks to migrate services in the vicinity of mobile users. However, the current migration-based studies lack the consideration of migration cost, transaction cost, and energy consumption on the system-level with discussion on the impact of personalized user mobility. In this paper, we implement an enhanced service migration model to address user proximity issues. We formalize the migration cost, transaction cost, energy consumption related to the migration process. We model the service migration issue as a complex optimization problem and adapt Deep Reinforcement Learning to approximate the optimal policy. We compare the performance of the proposed model with the recent Q-learning method and other baselines. the results demonstrate that the proposed model can estimate the optimal policy with complicated computation requirements.

this paper addresses the questions of high-level system modelling using heterogeneous multi-tool modelling environment on parallel multi-core processing systems for simulation acceleration. the modelling technique has been applied for high-level validation of a high-precision Indoor Positioning System for Motion Analysis (IPS-MA) developed in the Central Institute Electronic Systems (ZEA-2) of the Research Center Juelich GmbH. the heterogeneous modelling environment has been built using an implementation-level model designed in Matlab Simulink, a verification model for describing the system environment using Modelica language, and Julia language for automatic generation of binding modelling environment and parallelizing the simulation of the overall model. the approach showed a good flexibility in system description and verification in the multi-instrument modelling environment and a good performance gain due to simulation parallelism.

distributed database services are an increasingly important part of cloud computing. they are required to satisfy several key properties, including consensus and fault tolerance. Given the highly concurrent nature of these systems, subtle errors can arise that are difficult to discover through traditional testing methods. Formal verification can help in discovering bugs and ensuring correctness of these systems. In this paper, we apply formal methods to specify and verify an industrial distributed database, Taurus, which uses a combination of several fundamental protocols, including Multi-Version Concurrency Control and Raft-based Cluster Management. TLA(+) is used to model an abstraction of the system and specify its properties. the properties are verified using the TLC model checker, as well as by theorem proving using the TLA proof system (TLAPS). We show that model checking is able to reproduce a bug in Taurus that was found during testing. But our most significant result is twofold: we successfully verified an abstract model of Taurus, and convinced our industrial partners of the usefulness of formal methods to industrial systems.

In this work, we propose an IoT edge-based energy management system devoted to minimizing the energy cost for the daily-use of in-home appliances. the proposed approach employs a load scheduling based on a load shifting technique, and it is designed to operate in an edge-computing environment naturally. the scheduling considers all together time-variable profiles for energy cost, energy production, and energy consumption for each shiftable appliance. Deadlines for load termination can also be expressed. In order to address these goals, the scheduling problem is formulated as a Markov decision process and then processed through a reinforcement learning technique. the approach is validated by the development of an agent-based real-world test case deployed in an edge context.

A detailed computer simulation is an important tool for the managing of road traffic. Since it can be very time consuming, it is often performed in a distributed computing environment. the simulated road traffic network is then divided into sub-networks simulated by processes on the nodes of the distributed computer. the inter-process communication necessary for the vehicle transfer and the synchronization can then significantly influence the performance of the distributed road traffic simulation. In this paper, two efficient communication protocols for distributed road traffic simulation, which we developed during our previous research, are compared. these protocols - the Long Step (LS) protocol and the Long Step Binary (LSB) protocol - reduce the inter-process communication using an aggregate message transfer and/or a lossy data compression. Semi-centralized, centralized, and distributed variants of both protocols were thoroughly tested and compared to a reference communication protocol representing a common protocol of distributed road traffic simulators. the tests indicate significant savings of the number of transferred messages and, more importantly, of the total computation time.

the present paper describes a new parallel time-domain simulation algorithm using a high performance computing environment - Julia - for the analysis of power system dynamics in large networks. the parallel algorithm adapts a parallel-in-space decomposition scheme to a previously sequential algorithm in order to develop a new parallelizable numerical solution of the power system equations. the parallel-in-space decomposition is based on the block bordered diagonal form, which reformulates the network admittance matrix into sub-blocks that can be solved in parallel. For the optimal spatial decomposition of the network, a new extended graph partitioning strategy is developed for load balancing and minimizing the communication between subnetworks. the new parallel simulation algorithm is tested using standard test networks of varying complexity. the simulation results are compared to those obtained from a sequential implementation in order to validate the solution accuracy and to determine the performance improvement in terms of computational speedup. Test simulations are conducted using the ForHLR II supercomputing cluster and show a huge potential in computational speedup with increasing network complexity.

the increasing scale and complexity of scientific applications are rapidly transforming the ecosystem of tools, methods, and workftows adopted by the high-performance computing (HPC) community. Big data analytics and deep learning are gaining traction as essential components in this ecosystem in a variety of scenarios, such as, steering of experimental instruments, acceleration of high-fidelity simulations through surrogate computations, and guided ensemble searches. In this context, the batch job model traditionally adopted by the supercomputing infrastructures needs to be complemented with support to schedule opportunistic on-demand analytics jobs, leading to the problem of efficient preemption of batch jobs with minimum loss of progress. In this paper, we design and implement a simulator, CoSim, that enables on-the-fty analysis of the trade-offs arising between delaying the start of opportunistic on-demand jobs, which leads to longer analytics latency, and loss of progress due to preemption of batch jobs, which is necessary to make room for on-demand jobs. To this end, we propose an algorithm based on dynamic programming with predictable performance and scalability that enables supercomputing infrastructure schedulers to analyze the aforementioned trade-off and take decisions in near real-time. Compared with other state-of-art approaches using traces of the theta pre-Exascale machine, our approach is capable of finding the optimal solution, while achieving high performance and scalability.

Quantum computing introduces a new computing paradigm that promises to solve problems that cannot be solved by classical computers efficiently. thus, quantum applications will be more and more integrated in classical applications. To bring these composite applications into production, technologies for an automated deployment and orchestration are required to avoid manual error-prone and time-consuming processes. For non-quantum applications, a variety of deployment technologies have been developed in recent years. However, the deployment of quantum applications currently differs significantly from non-quantum applications and thus, leads to a different modeling procedure for the deployment of quantum applications. To overcome these problems, we propose TOSCA4QC that introduces two deployment modeling styles based on the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) standard for automating the deployment and orchestration of quantum applications: (i) SDK-specific modeling style to cover all technical deployment details and (ii) SDK-agnostic modeling style supporting common modeling principles. We further show how existing model-driven development (MDD) approach can be applied to refine a SDK-agnostic model to an executable SDK-specific model. We demonstrate the practical feasibility by a prototypical implementation as an extension of the TOSCA ecosystem OpenTOSCA and three case studies with IBMQ and a quantum simulator.
