Querying a relational database is typically taught in practice by using an exercise database. Such databases may be simple toy examples or elaborate and complex schemas that mimic the real world. Which of these are preferable for students is yet unknown. Research has shown that while more complex exercise databases may hinder learning, they also benefit student engagement, as more complex databases are seen as more realistic. In our mixed-methods study, we explore what aspects of an exercise database contribute to student engagement in database education. To gain insight into what students would deem engaging, we asked 56 students to design, implement, and reflect on engaging databases for database education. the results imply that students are engaged by highly diverse yet easily understood database business domains, relatively simple database structures, and conceivable yet seemingly realistic amounts of data. the results challenge some previous study results while supporting approaches found in some textbooks, and provide guidelines and inspiration for educators designing exercise databases for querying and introducing relational database concepts.

In this work, we developed an algorithm for detecting code quality issues in the templates of online programming tasks, validated it, and conducted an empirical study on the dataset of student solutions. the algorithm consists of analyzing recurring unfixed issues in solutions of different students, matching them with the code of the template, and then filtering the results. Our manual validation on a subset of tasks demonstrated a precision of 80.8% and a recall of 73.3%. We used the algorithm on 415 Java tasks from the JetBrains Academy platform and discovered that as much as 14.7% of tasks have at least one issue in their template, thus making it harder for students to learn good code quality practices. We describe our results in detail, provide several motivating examples and specific cases, and share the feedback of the developers of the platform, who fixed 51 issues based on the output of our approach.

Uptake of Computing science (CS) in schools in Scotland is far lower than desired, because of young people both not being able to access the subject and not choosing to study it. Moreover, over the last two decades, uptake across the country has been dropping, and gender balance in uptake is not only poor but worsening. As a first step to gaining insight into how we could work to improve uptake of CS, we have analysed data for secondary schools in Scotland over the last three years, with a focus on publicly-funded schools, to explore where inequalities and context-specific drivers have an impact. In this paper, we discuss how the location of a school in a certain socio-economic area and in an urban/rural/remote location impact the chances of young people studying CS. the data indicates that socio-economic advantage is a positive factor in accessing CS. It also indicates that urban locations tend to be advantageous in this respect, though the data around this is more complicated.

Smart schooling seeks to enhance the educational experience through technology. In this effort, a digital educational platform has been developed and empirically tested to identify students at risk of academic failure and dropout, while also promoting effective study and learning habits. Machine learning algorithms are employed to assess academic failure risk based on students' responses to a questionnaire created by educational psychologists. the platform predicts students' academic performance by analyzing factors related to their school and home environments, as well as their motivation to learn. Additionally, a decision support system is integrated to alert the class director and recommend preventive actions when risks or unusual behaviors are identified. this study examines the significance of supply chain dynamism in improving decision-making in the retail sector in Jordan with a special focus on technological and organizational integration as moderating variables. Supply chain dynamism is acknowledged to be one of the pivotal factors in successfully navigate through the complex world of retail today, however, its effect on directly improving decision making has not been looked into. this paper examines the level of dynamism within supply chains in the Jordanian retail industry, presents key determinants for enabling effective SC decision-making, and highlights the interaction between those dimensions, along with collaboration which mediated through technology & Organizational integration. Results show that greater supply chain dynamism leads to better decision-making with complementary nature of technology and organizational process integration. the research provided recommendations for practitioners to improve decision-making and performance in the case of the Jordanian retail sector through supply chain dynamism and technological and organizational integration. © 2024 IEEE.

technology-enhanced teaching and learning environments transform the learning experience and increase student interest and engagement in the lesson. Virtual Reality (VR) has been identified as a multimodal medium that offers highly interactive and fully immersive experiences through which students can access a variety of meanings and enter a new social learning space which transcends classroom boundaries. VR also constitutes an innovative digital tool for foreign language (FL) learning in tertiary education through which teachers can promote a more situated learning context. Based on the multimodal affordances of the VR application Dreams of Dali, this paper aims to propose meaningful ways the application can be embedded in an English-for-Specific-Purposes (ESP) course in tertiary education, foregrounding the delivery of pedagogical content, creating student immersive literacy practices, and leading to alternative ways of conceptualising meanings. the immersive environment in Dreams of Dali can pose an instructional design tool which can increase familiarisation with course-related content in English for Fine Arts and help simulate an authentic surrealistic environment that deviates from static art-related images and passive surrealist representations of the art movement in the classroom.

this paper presents an educational activity developed within the AIM@VET project, aimed at integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) into Vocational education and Training (VET) for programming robots using natural language. the curriculum covers key AI topics such as Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), natural language processing, and the use of advanced models like ChatGPT. Students engage in activities from basic command interpretation to advanced voice-controlled interactions, gaining practical experience with LLMs in robotics. Evaluations showed significant improvements in understanding and engagement, highlighting the effectiveness of LLMs in enhancing robotics education for VET students.

the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in K-12 social studies education presents a complex blend of opportunities and challenges. this paper explores the transformative potential and ethical dilemmas of employing AI, particularly in engaging with historical primary sources. Utilizing a Delphi methodology, this study captures insights from social studies educators on AI's role in enhancing or complicating the teaching and learning process. the research reveals the transformative potential of AI to deepen historical understanding and empathy through innovative tools, yet it also underscores significant concerns about the accuracy, representation of historical events and figures, and the authenticity of educational content. this exploration presents the paradox inherent in educational AI: its ability to radically transform learning experiences with innovative tools while also threatening to obscure the distinction between historical accuracy and fabrication. the emerging capabilities of generative AI prompt vital questions concerning the legitimacy of information, trustworthiness, and authenticity in historical representation. We consider the implications of AI for pedagogy, emphasizing the need for instructional approaches that engage students in the critical analysis of complex influences shaping historical narratives and visual representations. the paper also addresses the role of AI in perpetuating or challenging historical narratives and biases. It underscores the importance of critical theory in social studies education to analyze the impact of synthetic media and conversational AI agents on students' perceptions of history. We emphasize the need for collaboration between educators, technologists, and historians to ensure that AI tools enrich the educational landscape without compromising the integrity and complexity of historical understanding.

this article discusses the utilization of writing analytics in Special education, with a particular focus on students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Research increasingly supports the use of data mining and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze and support students' writing processes, showcasing the potential of these systems to enhance student engagement and the accuracy of automated feedback. However, concerns persist regarding potential biases and ethical implications. the literature highlights limitations in applying Writing Analytics and AI to atypical students since most research and tools are designed with typical students in mind, reflecting societal biases. Autistic students often encounter challenges in writing performance due to factors such as rigid style, limited vocabulary, and difficulties expressing thoughts. this paper presents a study involving the analysis of 2643 essays from secondary education students, including a subset with ASD, using text-to-network tools and NLP analysis to compare texts and examine computational linguistics metrics and text mining patterns. Preliminary findings suggest the necessity for tailored evaluation and interventions for ASD students. While AI offers opportunities for personalized interventions, further research is essential to effectively adapt current tools for atypical students.
