Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. In this study, through an extensive literature review, a rigorous curriculum analysis of 49 computer science programs across the globe, and qualitative and quantitative analysis of surveys and interviews bringing in the voices of 613 students and 30 educators participating from around the world, we explore equity, diversity, and inclusion in the computer science curriculum. We highlight the role of inclusive content and course design, discuss program flexibility, and the impact of inclusive courses and program design in attracting and retaining historically marginalized students. Finally, we provide concrete steps to make computing science undergraduate curricula more appealing to a diverse audience. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

the study of syntactic-semantic interface has always been an important part of linguistics and natural language processing (NLP) research, and the introduction of events into it can provide a consistent object for syntactic-semantic research. In the system of Chinese Parataxis Graph (CPG), event is a chunked description of sentence semantics, and the analysis of event structure provides an effective perspective for the semantic analysis. However, the academic research on event structure is mostly theoretical and lacks relevant data statistics. In this paper, we measure and analyse the syntactic representations of event structures based on CPG Annotated Corpus, to reflect the distribution of the syntactic positions of event words when the event structures are mapped to syntactic structures, as well as the presence or absence and co-occurrence of the core arguments of events that are mapped to different syntactic structures, and analyzing some of the data. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Athletes need to train both physical and mental abilities to enhance performance. While technologies such as sensors and actuators have mainly focused on physical training, few solutions support mental training. Virtual reality (VR) technology and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) open new possibilities for developing applications targeting this type of training for athletes. We conducted a formative study to investigate the user experience of integrating CBT techniques into VR technology, focusing on two essential mental factors of running: strategy and motivation. To address these factors, we developed a CBT-influenced VR application. We tested the user experience of our VR application with 25 runners. the results revealed that runners had a positive and valuable experience with the VR application and its associated CBT elements. the perceived importance of race strategy was a key predictor of user experience assessments. this study suggests that VR solutions influenced by CBT are a plausible approach to developing suitable mental training tools in sports. the performance of multilingual language models (MLLMs) is notably inferior for low-resource languages (LRL) compared to high-resource ones, primarily due to the limited available corpus during the pre-training phase. this inadequacy stems from the under-representation of low-resource language words in the subword vocabularies of MLLMs, leading to their misidentification as unknown or incorrectly concatenated subwords. Previous approaches are based on frequency sorting to select words for augmenting vocabularies. However, these methods overlook the fundamental disparities between model representation distributions and frequency distributions. To address this gap, we introduce a novel Entropy-Consistency Word Selection (ECWS) method, which integrates semantic and frequency metrics for vocabulary augmentation. Our results indicate an improvement in performance, supporting our approach as a viable means to enrich vocabularies inadequately represented in current MLLMs. © 2025 Association for Computational Linguistics.

Problem-based and project-based learning (PBL) is a creative, inquiry-based process, enriched by teamwork, implemented through a longer timespan, with considerable student workload. As the process is normally conducted with a high level of student autonomy, there is often no way of monitoring what resources students rely on. In this context, the rapid availability of generative AI can support not only innovation, but also unfair practices. In this article, we will present case study research on the use of AI in PBL summative assessment in higher education, based on six courses. We analyzed and compared six courses of different levels of study (undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate), in different areas/subjects (mathematics, IT, project management, education). In some courses, it was obligatory to use AI, while in others it was either optional or not foreseen. We analyzed assessment results, student surveys and teacher testimonials, using mixed-method research. Recent advances in Quadruple Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis (Quad-ABSA) have heavily relied on datasets from SemEval challenges, which raises concerns regarding the generalizability of these models across diverse domains. this study addresses this limitation by introducing a novel dataset specifically tailored to the hospitality sector, offering a unique benchmark to evaluate Quad-ABSA models. Our experiments reveal a notable gap: while existing models perform well with SemEval datasets, they fail to maintain their effectiveness when applied to our new domain-specific dataset. this underperformance highlights the critical importance of understanding dataset nuances, including domain-specific characteristics and annotation quality, which significantly influence model performance and generalization. Our research highlights the necessity for broader evaluations of Quad-ABSA models, advocating for the development and utilization of diverse and high-quality datasets to ensure robust and versatile sentiment analysis solutions. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Effective configuration of Time-Sensitive Networks is crucial for providing timeliness and reliability guarantees for real-time industrial applications, where many inter-dependent streams may co-exist. However, existing methods for specifying the characteristics of real-time streams to the Centralized Network Configuration element (CNC) do not allow the specification of stream dependencies. Consequently, the CNC may schedule the real-time streams in a sub-optimal way, leading to low number of real-time applications supported. To address this pressing issue, we present methods that allow to model and express such inter-stream dependencies and propose extensions to the user network interface (UNI) to convey these dependencies to the CNC, transforming it into an intent-based UNI. We define a novel metric to evaluate a specific network configuration regarding the latency budget available for scheduling the transmission of a stream. Using a set of numerical simulations, we show that when exploiting the knowledge of inter-stream dependencies, we can derive better network schedules, which results in significant increase in applications onboarding up to 2.2x and increased network utilization for real-time streams up to 3x. © 2025 IEEE.

the intersection of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and education is transforming learning and teaching, with Generative AI (GenAI) and large language models (LLMs) offering new possibilities. AI and LLMs personalize learning through adaptive study guides, instant feedback, automated grading, and content creation, making resources more accessible and tailored to individual needs. Notably, LLM-based chatbots, such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT, serve as virtual assistants, ideal for language practice. However, these chatbots often limit themselves to teaching vocabulary through role-playing conversations or providing instant feedback based on model-generated content, which may lead to exposure to inaccuracies. this overlooks the holistic nature of Language Learning (LL), which requires pedagogy, effective methods, reliable content, and a supportive teacher-student relationship. therefore, relying on a single chatbot is inefficient for the entire learning process. In this paper, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) is proposed, where each agent specializes in a specific function, working together to provide personalized, adaptive learning support. this approach breaks down the complex learning process into manageable parts. It employs the Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN), translated into agent-based modeling and LLMs to create dynamic, tailored learning environments. By simulating interactions similar to human tutoring, this model ensures real-time adjustments to meet each student’s evolving needs. Our project aims to address these limitations by using LL books with robust pedagogical resources as primary references. We focus on teaching Luxembourgish, adding complexity to our challenges as it is a low-resource language, ensuring a holistic learning experience. Recently, adversarial attacks against machine learning-based network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) have gained significant attention in cybersecurity. this study investigates the transferability of these adversarial attacks in the context of NIDS. In addition, most existing studies in adversarial learning against NIDS adopted attack strategies designed originally for image classification without considering network traffic characteristics. However, this is impractical and will fail in the real world as network traffic features are constrained, and ignoring the functional behavior of the network traffic features leads to invalid network traffic flow or produces adversarial samples that do not retain their original functionality (malicious or benign). To address these issues, we propose a constrained momentum iterative fast gradient sign method (C-MIFGSM) to generate adversarial network flows that can successfully evade an ML-based IDS through transfer-based attacks while preserving the functional behavior of the network traffic. Our approach was validated using several target NIDS models built with the NSLKDD benchmark dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that even without knowledge of the target model and under feature constraints, it is possible to generate adversarial network traffic flows that achieve a high evasion attack success rate against NIDS built with deep learning and classical ML models. For example, the attack degraded the detection rate of the DoS traffic drops from 92.35% to 20.27% for the MLP model with an evasion increase rate of 78.04%. © the Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.
