Various properties related with the safe, correct, and efficient operation of Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) can be expressed via formal languages and checked at runtime or offline by appropriate verification tools. Such tools operate on monitoring data about the CPS state and functionality, typically collected from IoT devices. A specific approach involves modeling CPS state or operations using Satisfiability Modulo theories (SMT) formalisms, and using solver software to check whether given CPS properties are satisfied or to derive satisfiable CPS configurations. the computational requirements of this process can however be significant, which challenges its timely execution on IoT/edge devices where input date originate. To address this challenge, we present an architecture that allows the distributed execution of SMT problem solving workloads over the computing continuum as a service. Our design supports arbitrary hierarchies of solver nodes running anywhere from the IoT device to the cloud, each independently executing decision-making logic as to whether to solve an SMT problem instance locally or to recursively offload the task to other nodes in the continuum. We demonstrate the benefits of offloading by implementing and quantitatively evaluating different reinforcement learning-based decision-making strategies addressing latency minimization and energy efficiency goals, and showcase the practicability of our scheme in a fog robotics proof-of-concept. © 2024 ACM.

To provide high performance and cope with ever-increasing traffic demand, Content Delivery Network (CDN) providers have started considering the use of multi-tier architectures, including simple caching devices that can augment their server infrastructure, resulting in a massively distributed caching network. these caching devices are usually geographically distributed, although with limited storage space and bandwidth (e.g., set-top boxes), potentially alleviating the servers' load. this paper initiates the joint resource allocation and routing problem underlying such networks while providing at least a minimum bandwidth for each request. We present Tero, a system that maximizes throughput in such scenarios and leverages popularity forecasting to adapt to demand changes quickly. In Tero, the CDN's edge server decides whether to serve each request locally or redirect it to a specific caching device, maximizing overall system throughput by offloading traffic to the device caches. To adjust to the highly dynamic nature of the demand patterns, Tero performs frequent near-future content popularity predictions and makes allocation decisions every few minutes. We model the optimization problem under these constraints and derive optimality properties using a Lagrangian formulation from which we design heuristic algorithms. We evaluate Tero on a synthetic and a real-world large CDN request sequences, on ablation studies, and by comparing with an upper performance bound. Tero can reduce the edge server's throughput and provide sufficient bandwidth to each request, outperforming the competing baselines by up to 44% while being close to the performance of the ideal upper bounds. Also, Tero takes allocation decisions orders of magnitude faster than solving the exact problem. © 2024 Owner/Author.

We present a protocol for carrying device authentication information in packets breaking out of the 5G network and entering the computing resources of a Multiaccess Edge computing (MEC) site. the authentication information is then used in a network function, called Customer Edge Switch (CES), inserted in front of the ingress into the computing resources, which authorizes traffic flows originated in the mobile network to access computing resources on a per-user and per-service basis according to the principles of zero-trust security. We evaluate the performance of our solution in an emulation environment that includes the 5G domain, a prototype implementation of the CES using the P4 language, and a Function-as-a-Service computing environment. Results show that the processing delay in the CES is small. We also provide a mathematical model for computing the maximum number of devices that can be managed at wire speed. (1)

the very edge of the rapidly evolving computing continuum is characterized by a wide variety of different hardware architectures, software platforms, and in general diverse device constraints and capabilities. While in-network computing and smaller distributed data centers continue to receive a lot of attention, idle workstations and consumer devices remain an underappreciated and largely untapped computing resource at the edge. this warrants further exploration. My research focuses on leveraging WebAssembly, a portable binary instruction format, and other Web-standard APIs to design, implement and evaluate a novel middleware, to enable distributed computation offloading and context-aware task placement across this vastly heterogeneous resource pool. By employing concepts of volunteer computing in a new context and obviating complex setups, idle edge devices are transformed into a collaborative computational resource. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

I/O constitutes a significant portion of most of the application run-time. Spawning many such applications concurrently on an HPC system leads to severe I/O contention. thus, understanding and subsequently reducing I/O contention induced by such multi-tenancy is critical for the efficient and reliable performance of the HPC system. In this study, we demonstrate that an application's performance is influenced by the command line arguments passed to the job submission. We model an application's I/O behavior based on two factors: past I/O behavior within a time window and user-configured I/O settings via command-line arguments. We conclude that I/O patterns for well-known HPC applications like E3SM and LAMMP are predictable, with an average uncertainty below 0.25 (A probability of 80%) and near zero (A probability of 100%) within a day. However, I/O pattern variance increases as the study time window lengthens. Additionally, we show that for 38 users and at least 50 applications constituting approximately 93000 job submissions, there is a high correlation between a submitted command line and the past command lines made within 1 to 10 days submitted by the user. We claim the length of this time window is unique per user. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Adopting Digital Twin (DT) technology in vehicular edge computing (VEC) enables efficient capture of real-time state information of applications, thereby addressing complex task scheduling problems. Existing literature studies considered only minimizing service latency for task offloading;however, there is room for exploring strategies to enhance user Quality of Experience (QoE) in timeliness and reliability domains. In this paper, we have developed an optimization framework using Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP), namely QuETOD, which minimizes service latency by allocating task execution responsibility to highly reliable and reputed vehicles in a DT-enabled VEC environment. the developed QuETOD framework clusters the vehicles based on the demand-supply theory of economics by considering computing resources and utilizing the multi-weighted subjective logic for getting the proper reputation update of the vehicles. the experimental results of the developed QuETOD system depict significant performance improvement in terms of QoE and reliability compared to the state-of-the-art works as high as 15% and 25%, respectively.

the uniform partitioning problem, driven by the need for an equitable distribution of workload, finds numerous practical applications in the real world. For that purpose, in this paper, we consider N autonomous mobile robots, deployed inside a bounded region. the robots are opaque which means that three collinear robots are unable to see each other as one of the robots acts as an obstruction for the other two. they operate in classical Look-Compute-Move (LCM) activation cycles. Moreover, the robots are oblivious except for a persistent light (which is why they are called Luminous robots) that can determine a color from a fixed color set. Obliviousness does not allow the robots to remember any information from past activation cycles. the Uniform Partitioning problem requires the robots to partition the whole region into sub-regions of equal area, each of which contains exactly one robot. Due to application-oriented motivation, we, in this paper consider the region to be well-known geometric shapes such as rectangle, square and circle. We investigate the problem in asynchronous setting where there is no notion of common time and any robot gets activated at any time with a fair assumption that every robot needs to get activated infinitely often. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to study the Uniform Partitioning problem using oblivious opaque robots working under asynchronous settings. We propose three algorithms considering three different regions: rectangle, square and circle. Robots partition the region in a distributed way and reach their respective positions in the partitions. the algorithms proposed for rectangular and square regions run in O(N) epochs whereas the algorithm for circular regions runs in O(N2) epochs, where an epoch is the smallest unit of time in which all robots are activated at least once and execute their LCM cycles. © 2024 ACM.

this work focuses on managing upstream traffic in multigateway Low-Power Wide Area Networks (LPWANs) to support efficient traffic from thousands of nodes. As LPWANs face challenges such as increased collision probability and network saturation due to node densification, our research introduces a distributed and probabilistic traffic control protocol. this protocol aims to effectively manage network traffic, reduce collisions, and mitigate saturation issues, ensuring better performance and scalability in densely populated IoT environments. the protocol enables nodes to dynamically adapt their traffic to meet application needs, such as transmitting a defined number of measurements (K) within a designated time frame. this adjustment remains unaffected by the node count and network topology, focusing instead on the feedback message's destination to the network nodes, which is crucial for dynamically adapting traffic intensity and reducing collisions. We explore two feedback transmission strategies: a synchronous one, where all gateways transmit feedback simultaneously to all nodes, and a round-robin one, where one gateway at a time sends feedback to nodes within its coverage area. Based on simulation results, our evaluated strategies achieve substantial performance improvements over the Baseline LoRaWAN. Specifically, they demonstrate a network lifetime increase of up to 93.12%, a success rate increase of up to 96.34%, and a packet delivery ratio increase of up to 14.97%. these findings highlight significant enhancements in both efficiency and reliability compared to traditional LoRaWAN configurations.

An Energy Management System (EMS) based on fog computing is introduced to enhance energy management. this system utilizes a streamlined model to address social networking issues by maintaining a balance between generated and required energy. the networking challenge is framed as a coalition problem tackled using particle swarm optimization. As the number of power customers grows, EMS efficiency in real-time environments faces challenges due to increasing computational complexity. To mitigate this, several service providers are shifting their computing and storage resources to cloud and fog environments. Fog computing, positioned between the cloud and customers, improves system speed compared to the cloud. In this scenario, a multi-unit residential building is considered, with each apartment acting as a player and excess electricity serving as compensation. the surplus power is distributed to apartments with energy shortages using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), which allocates electricity based on demand. Simulation results show that a surplus of 13.9 kWh of electricity is conserved and allocated to energy-deficient apartments at various times throughout the day. © 2024 IEEE.
