field programmability and ASIC technology have made significant contributions to computer design. fieldprogrammable technologies, in PROM, PLD, and FPGA embodiments, far exceed their mask programmable equivalents in flexibility and time-to-market attributes. In a similar vein, gate array and cell-based ASICs offer cost (both NRE and piecepart) and design productivity improvement factors far superior to full-custom-designed chips. pFSB technology, with its programmable functional system blocks based on the ViaLinkTM antifuse element, is 100% compatible with high-performance CMOS ASIC technology. It can be used to create PROM, logic, and custom ViaLink cells which are embedded in an ASIC. Compatibility with ASIC libraries, compilers, and tools is maintained. this paper presents an overview of pFSB technology and its applications to computer design. Included are a description of the ViaLink programming element, a description of pFSB cells and how they are used, and a summary of design methodology, testing, and programming considerations.

Proposed new troubleshooting methods for programmable controllers (PCs). through studies of fieldapplications in the tire industry the sequential function chart (SFC) is recognized as not only a powerful substitution for ladder logic diagram but also as useful in machine trouble diagnosis. Typical enhancements of SFC as self diagnostic function are; 1) to search the conditions which cause the machine to halt, 2) to collect logging table data for the historical program paths analysis, and 3) to specify the cause of the trouble by tracing back 1) and 2). this paper discusses the self diagnostic functions by SFC and its implementation.< >

Exciting advances in ?eld programmablelogic show no sign of slowing down. New grounds have been broken in architectures, design techniques, run-time - con?guration, and applications of ?eld programmable devices in several di?erent areas. Many of these innovations are reported in this volume. the size of FPL conferences has grown signi?cantly over the years.
